5x12 bath pics

We recently took over a small hallway closet to expand our 5x9 bathroom to 5x12. We are big DIYers, but used a contractor for this job b/c it's our only shower and we wanted to minimize the time showering w/ a rigged up shower in the basement.

We're more or less happy with the finished result, but learned a lot about working with contractors and would most likely take a different approach if we did it all over again--for example, hiring specialists (or doing some of the detail work ourselves) vs. a GC. Sigh.

Favorite things:

+ Having a nice soaky tub

+ Having 2 sinks and loads of storage between vanity and medicine cabinets

+ Heated floors (will love in about 4 weeks when it gets cold here)

Tub: Kohler Archer (love love love this tub)

misspixie, your new bathroom looks great. Isn't it amazing what 3 extra feet will do for a space? You have used many of the same elements we have except ours aren't all in the same bathroom. We have a guest bath with the Kelston toilet, a dark espresso single sink RH vanity (can't remember the name), and just a shower rather than a tub. I love the combination you did with the Kelston and the RH vanity and they look very stylish together. We have the 6' Archer tub in another bathroom and we also love that tub. It's a very comfortable deep soaker for the larger folks in our family.

We remodeled a 100 year old home by ourselves acting as our own GC (when we were very young) and always said it was a shame to let all that experience go to waste even though we never did any more remodeling---but did just finish up building our new home using a GC. I'm betting that you've learned enough with this experience to take charge of your next project but I love the way your bathroom turned out

Your new bathroom is beautiful! I am happy to hear that you love the Archer tub. Our demo started today, and I need to have a tub by next Thursday. The Archer (drop-in) is one of the finalists.

PinchMe -- I actually bought the blue pearl vanity top with integrated white porcelain sink about 1.5 years ago when I was doing my kitchen! I saw the top and I just melted and bought it on the spot, though knowing the bath reno was down the road. It's been hiding in my garage ever since. I opened it again to look at it 2 weeks ago when I found the mosaics and I just died from eye-candy overload! My current bathroom was re-done in 1972, I think. It is HORRID. And falling apart. I'm hoping that when I come back next Monday, at least the tub/shower and tiled tub alcove will be done. And floor!? Sooo excited! The mirror came Sat., which is a Venetian. There will be so much sparkle in this room, I can't wait! It's a tiny bath about 9x7, so I really wanted to make it special and make it POP! Prickly -- I have no idea what the floor tile is -- I was so excited when the store found it for me that I forgot to ask! I only know it's from Italy... sorry. Thanks Joanie. The kids have their own bathroom, so it's just my hubby and me. I like the hook idea as well. I guess I need to check out a few websites for ideas of what exactly I should do. I have turned a few pics of our kids into black and whites and have blown them up and framed them. I have one in our hall bath down stairs of my daughter looking out onto my inlaw's lake last summer. I'm always trying to get pics of the kids or of nature to turn into artwork for our home. The vanity was a cinch to paint. Wiped it down, did a very light sanding, and then did a white primer. I used SW paint for cabinetry-two coats and it was done. Very easy and I'm pleased with the outcome. It's such a small master bath, that I wanted to lighten it up to make it feel a little larger, which I think it has done. Good luck if you decide to do yours!

We did something similar to what you're proposing, although we had a smidge more length (14'): View toward the left of the drawing above: And to the right: /Tangent: I do woodworking as a hobby and made the cabinetry from 100-yr-old Douglas-fir studs that we tore out during the remodel. So I made it to my own specs and love it./ I love, love, LOVE the 6'x6' shower/tub space. Despite its small size, it is the most zen space in my house and feels spacious whether showering or bathing - I'd do it again in a heartbeat. As you can see, we gave up the option of a double vanity to do this. It looks like you could do something similar, although as you said you'd have a 48" vanity and obviously the toilet would not be in a separate water closet. To answer your questions about whether to have a wider tub or shower, I would go with the wider shower and narrower tub unless you're a relatively wide person or like to sprawl out sideways in the tub. Because my tub is relatively narrow, I take more baths - it doesn't take as long to fill and uses less energy to heat the water. Good luck and enjoy the planning!

I try to stay away from Chinese made in the kitchen- one of the reasons I chose Cambria (I liked American made.) Unfortunately, it's not easy. When I was looking at marble, I must have looked through about a hundred slabs, the country of origin was always listed. There's such a huge difference in the way marble from China and marble from Italy looks, just unreal. The price too, huge difference. I don't remember seeing India though, probably did but nothing about it stood out I guess.

I really like the tile color you picked out for your bathroom. I'm finding tile is the toughest thing to pick out for our bathrooms. I wish we had that extra few feet to include in our bathroom the large soaking tub and double vanities look oh so nice.

Misspixie, very pretty, uncluttered bathroom - you designed it well! I am also considering the Archer 5 ft tub and would greatly appreciate your advice. Since you are using it as a shower as well, do you find that the bottom part is wide enough for standing in while showering? Some people on this site mentioned that it felt too narrow. Thank you in advance!
