reconfiguring network connections

I don't even know it that is the correct phrase.

Can I get a step by step for setting up my netgear router with a secure connection to my PC and my laptop.I've spent hours reseaching, but I'm really confused. I'm trying to establish a secure connection which I don't think I have right now. I want to make sure all my configurations are correct before I attempt to move my router to a more central location because of connection timing out or spotty.

This is very easy to do and should be in your instruction sheet that came with your router. However, the instructions are given in the link I've provided.

Thanks so much!
Followed the steps, now I will have to move away from the router. Right now, near the router, I have excellent signal strength. Will securing the network help with this?

mikie, Thanks, I'll take a look at the fourms you sent. The modem could be a "hub", it does connect the Internet (via DSL) to the Ethernet, but that's it, there are no other posts. My router has 4 Ethernet channels one 802.11 WiFi channel and a "modem" channel/input. I'll look to see if I can find anything on "bridge mode", that's new to me. While typing I noticed my manual for my router on the floor, must have been looking at in in the past year (have a hard time putting things away). I shows doing exactly what I wanted, but does seem to suggest a power/down/up on the route (Microsoft MN-700 Wireless Base Station), I'll try that before going to the web for more help. The unit also has a setup CD, I need too look further into that too. I had the unit working as a "hub" to interconnect three computers in the house, and it worked. I don't remember if I ever ran the setup CD.

I disabled the firewall. I also found a previous thread that described essentially the same problem. However, it was finally solved by installing Vista updates. Right now, I have no way of getting on-line. I also ran a Network diagnostic that says: "This computer has the following default gateway entry 0.0.0.0" "There is no default gateway entry" "Redirecting user to support call" Is there anyway to get updates without being connected? Mike, do you like scaring people with suggestive and (in my opinion) misleading comments? The WEP "encryption" (it's a stretch to call it that) was broken years ago. It's easily defeated and is essentially open. That's not even old news. it's very old news. WPA2 is difficult to crack, and a financial conversation using https is very, very, very difficult to intercept. I won't say impossible, but beyond the reach of other than top pros. I think any user here should feel completely safe in using a properly secured home PC and WPA2 wifi signal to conduct any nature of communications over the internet. Yes, a wire can be more secure but the EM radiation wires and PCs emit can also be intercepted too. Are you suggesting every home needs radiation shielding?

Make sure that the circuitry of the thing is otherwise electrically isolated from ground, but otherwise, using one terminal connected unswitched to your house neutral should not be a problem.

The security has nothing to do with the signal strength. You might try locating your router in different positions/locations to see where you get the best signal.

I thought other computers in the area could use my network and make the connection weaker...???No? I am learning so much. Thanks!

Yes, if your neighbors are using your network they will be using your bandwidth, but that does not affect the signal strength. If you have a limit on the amount of bandwidth you can use, it would affect your total usage amount. For example, I use cellular wireless broadband, and I have a limit of 5GB per month. If someone else were using my network, I'd soon run over my limit.

Of course, that isn't the only reason to have your network secured. Keeping your information private, especially if you do any online business transactions, is paramount.
