On top of checking if add-ons are the concern here, I would also point out that ram/video card may be an issue here. While I realize that if we really wanted to Ubuntu (32 bit) only really needs 128-256 mb of memory to work. However, to make it run efficiently with firefox and so forth more is needed. Accordingly, one way to increase performance would be to increase ram. Slap another 2 gigs ( I dunno if companies make 2gigs any more) in there and it should work better. Furthermore, there is also a program called zram that has done wonders with other machines ( I would try this first). Beyond that all I can really say is double check for any viruses and maybe disable IPv6 if you haven't done so already. Lastly, viruses are theoretically possible on linux based OS's just very, very unlikely. In fact it is more likely you have a virus on your windows partition that is effecting memory consumption.

There are some host file edits that have been posted in the past...this has always been an issue with GardenWeb. You can't however remove them all. To improve GW using IE do the following: From the menu select Tools -> Internet Options -> Security and click on Custom Level. Scroll down to the end of the list and you'll see an entry for Scripting. Disable all the sub-entries. Now select the tab labeled Privacy. In the bottom of the box that appears check on the option to block pop-ups. I recommend you also click on the button Advanced and select the option to block Third-party Cookies. NOTE: By disabling Scripting you will also effect the way other websites behave. You may need to get used to switching scripting on and off as desired. That's why this is the least desirable of these various options. The FireFox solution This is an excellent choice -- it's the fastest performing of the options listed here: FireFox is superior to IE in every possible way. From the menu select: Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Cookies Allow cookies for the originating website only Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Images Accept Images that come from the originating server only Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Images Block unrequested popup windows -- turn this on Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced Enable native object scripting -- turn this off Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plug-ins Enable Java$cript for Navigator -- turn this off NOTE: GW will now be ad free, however disabling Java$cript will effect how other websites behave. You may have to get used to switching this setting back and forth. Therefore I suggest the Universal option above is more appropriate. NOTE: You MAC users out there: Sorry I don't have more info for you except to say that FireFox and adblock are available for the MAC. There's no sense in further complaing, iVillage IS an ad. that is excellent news Faron! please please get rid of the registry cleaner so you will not be tempted to use it again, they do that scare tactic telling you there are so many errors to fix, the versions of windows from xp on up do not need registry cleaners at all, the very old versions did benefit a bit from them but not now, in fact we see more damaged computers from registry cleaners than you would belive. to do the adblockplus on your firefox to block the ads you can watch this little you tube just pay no attention to the version numbers he mentions. How to Install and Set Up AdBlock Plus once you put adblock plus on firefox it will ask you to restart firefox do that then you can either do the easylist as they tell you on the video or just go here and under easy list click add to adblock plus, I also add their easy privacy. then restart firefox one more time to make sure it all set and you are good to go. EasyList any help you need with firefox feel free to ask, there are so many fantastic addons for it that I just can not live with out now. You can look through the lists of them here Add-ons a few that I love are colorful tabs copy as html link dictionary search WOT for safe browsing xmarks which saves all your bookmarks to your persona xmarks page and you can access them from any pc anywhere plus it syncs all your bookmarks automatically if you put it on more than one pc so all your pc's have the same updated bookmarks. I love it. so there you have a few to look at. You can always add them and if you find you don't like them very easily go back and remove them.
