New Netbook, Now what?

I bought the Asus HE stock from Amazon. Charged the battery last night and just turned it on. I am typing on my old (love it though eMAC). XP is loading, seems a little slow - I assume if I upgraded from 1 MG to 2 MG it would be faster?

My big question revolves around security. I have had my EMac for close to or maybe at least 10 years. I've taken it in a couple times to have the OS upgraded. But I've never dinked around with any kind of security or firewalls.

I'm not a big computer person, so I feel a little lost here. I don't worry too much but the reason I switched to a MAC at home was I was so tired of having problems with my PCs at home, if it was virus's it was corrupt MS files causing me to reload the OS.

So....recommendations for basic security for the not too paranoid but easily frustrated?

Oh and I noticed that on the mousepad thing that the right click key doesn't seem to work, doesn't sound the same, feel the same or work - unless its right click vs. left click thing?

I have a acer netbook that came with McAfee trial installed I am using it for now but will change over to Avast free antivirus which is my preferred AV, for malware I use the free malwarebytes and free superantispyware they are both excellent. I also use spywareblaster free which just requires a weekly update and to enable all protection no scans with it. I do weekly updates and scans with the 2 malware programs and have my avast set to do scanning with the screen saver. If you need links for any of those just ask.
as to the mouse click problem that sounds like a problem and I would address that with the manufacturer since it is brand new. I personally can not use the touch pad so I just use my mini usb mouse with my acer and it is much easier.

Try a simple reboot first or restart, If that does not work then; un plug the router and modem. Then plug modem in wait for 30 sec. Then plug router in. See if that helps. I can't understand how it's possible to lose a network driver on a new machine or any machine for that matter drivers just don't disappear!

Karla, I did the same thing. One of the screens which popped up looked just like AVG, which is my AV. It was running a scan but there were smaller windows which looked like Windows and said,'security alert! your computer has a virus, you must update your antivirus. It had the colors of a Windows warning with the red X and blue background. The AV scan was zipping along with these alerts popping up. I was so confused, luckily I didn't react immediately (which is what I tend to do), I sat and looked at the windows and realized the scan (which looked exactly like AVG) was not AVG. It was missing the 'G'. The top of the screen just said AV. When I saw that, I knew the other boxes weren't Windows. I couldn't X anything or stop the scan. I tried to open AVG but it wouldn't open. I tried Malwarebytes, no luck. I then tried to shut down the computer and the Start button wouldn't work. More pop-ups all over the place. I manually shut the computer off. When I restarted, I did the same as Karla. I clicked on Malwarebytes immediatelly before the other processes started. It instantly grabbed 3 items before it scanned (thought that was odd). After the scan it showed 7 items: Trojan horse Fake AV.CDC Virus identified Exploit PDF Trojan.Fraudepack AV Suite Rogue.AVSecurity Suite Temp Files IE5 Rogue AV Security Suite. I don't know how to show the log. I might reinstall Windows and be done with this. It was very upsetting. I think it is a good choice for you. I have a desktop, a laptop, and a 10" Dell mini. I like the mini a lot for traveling, because it is so small and light, but the screen is definitely at the limit of my visual comfort level. The one you are considering looks like a reasonable price for something with those specs, and I think you will find the screen will be a definite improvement for you compared to the ones on most of the other minis. I only use my mini occasionally, and so I'm happy with it for my needs, but you will be using yours more than I do, and that one looks like a good compromise considering size, weight, and viewing comfort. The fact that it has a full-size keyboard is also a big plus, I say go for it...
