Black and Decker Cordless hedgetrimmer, Good or Bad?
Comments (13)A little bit late, but hope this helps. I am the owner of a B&D 18V trimmer, also had the 18v cordless sweeper. Bought these about 3 years ago, when they were shipping with 2 batteries each (had 4 total). The single biggest problem is the battery - the NiCads develop memory problem over time and start to hold less and less charge and now I am looking for a gas powered trimmer - as the batteries are about $35 each. If someone knows of a way to keep the NiCads from this memory problem let me know. If someone knows of a way to recover older batteries with the memory problem, please pass that knowledge on. How did they work? The string trimmer did work very well for me (I used it strictly for trimming close to the fence), and also edging. However, the edges have to be well maintained (no huge overgrowths, other wise it will struggle). I did not use this for "weedwhacking", I usually pull weeds out by hand. The cordless broom is just that - a broom, it shouldn't be classified as a blower. I started out with the intention of being a totally green homeowner, I had the following equipment: a) A push reel mower - I used this for about a year and gave up. Mowing wet grass, somewhat tall grass (I had to mow at least twice a week during summer), it was pure murder. Now, I have a Toro recycler. b) A cordless broom (B&D 18v) - Had to pony up to a corded Toro electric blower, the broom just didn't cut it by itself. c) A cordless string trimmer (B&D 18v) - I am in the process of looking for a replacement. Though I could use the batteries from the blower as well, all the batteries have aged and are not holding charge well. d) Craftsman electric edger - Though the B&D cordless is supposed to edge (and it does), it is good enough for light edging only. A burglary - To top it off, I had my garage, broken into, late last year and thieves made off with the cordless blower (with one battery still in it), the Toro electric blower, the Toro mower, and a Karcher 3KPSI pressure washer. I replaced the Toros (with the same models) and still in the lookout for a new pressure washer. It was in the course of my research into a new string trimmer that I ran into this post and thought I would contribute. For the average home owner the cordless trimmer is a good concept, but the batteries are consumables, and you should factor that into the ownership cost....See MoreCan gravel be kept clean with a leaf blower?
Comments (29)A friend of mine has a beautiful zen garden.. she rakes the leaves daily, in the autumn, as a meditative practice... but when the weather gets worse, wet and cold, she spreads fruit netting over the gravel, and leaves it in place until she gets clear weather, then bundles up the leaves and transfers them into black plastic bags and takes them to the recycling centre to add to their garden waste bins. Her kids help. She says it's a great lesson in impermanence...! Admittedly, her patch is not huge, but it's better than leaving the leaves to go black, soggy rain-sodden and rotting, on the gravel.... Amazon is your friend.... You can also examine use of bird/pond netting (to protect aquatic livestock from predatory birds, like herons and penguins....) which is quite strong. Also on Amazon....See MoreLawn Mowers/Leaf Blowers
Comments (8)I moved to a neighborhood where I cannot go out an mow my lawn without at least one or the other neighbor getting out their lawn mower! My name isn't Smith or Jones and I'm not the least bit interested in 'keeping up' with either! Have you met these neighbors? Perhaps they are mowing at this time of day because its good for the lawn? So long as they aren't doing this before 8am or after 8pm I don't think there is much one can do. Do they like kids? Perhaps you and your child could bake a plate of cookies, go over for a chat and introduce yourselves! They might share with you that mowing at 5pm is done because they don't like to mow in the heat of the day (or some other plausible excuse). Just saying. I personally don't like to mow more than I have to. If you were my neighbor and told me you liked to read to your child at that time of day I might mow a bit earlier to show consideration. One good thing about having so many folks at home during the day is that you have many eyes and ears keeping an eye on things. I like that about my neighborhood. Nothing gets past the neighbors. I don't leave a key with them but I know their first names and feel comfortable talking to them. Hope this helps!...See Morecordless leaf blowers
Comments (3)While you seem dead set against a gas trimmer, you may wish to consider the advantages of a four cycle gas trimmer. Most of the problem you have had with the 2 cycle gas trimmer will disappear. --- There is no mixing of the gas oil solution that a 2 cycle requires. A 4 cycle burn the same gas that you use in your car. --- Without oil in the gas, the carburetor jets do not get clogged with oil so you have less starting problems, and long term maintenance problems. --- There is no special oils, you can you use any SAE grade oil, natural of artificial. --- In a 4 cycle engine the oil lubricates the engine and does not get burned, so spark plug problems disappear. --- Gas stabilizer become much less important as there is no oil in the gas to oxidize and precipitate. Evaporation becomes a nearly a non issue as there are no solids when gasoline with out oil evaporates. ( I have never used stabilizer in the gas of my 4 cycle lawn equipment, and have never had a problem with gas. Even when I start them the first time in the spring.) There is one last consideration, if you get hyper about air pollution, there is significantly less pollution with a 4 cycle that a 2 cycle, and probably not that much more than the system pollution required to charge your electric trimmer. (System = generation + transmission + etc.) I have had my 4 cycle trimmer for several season now and when properly primed to get the air out of the gas lines, it starts on the first or second pull....See Moremustangs81
