Onyx tile shower: where to use caulk vs. grout?
Comments (3)We plan on very tiny joints. Are spacers used for very thin grout lines? Yes. Usually they're small tapered spacers called "marble wedges", as seen in the pic below. but Bill Vincent recommended siliconized latex caulk in another thread. Are there particular brands that perform well? Whatever the brand grout you used, that's the brand of caulking you get, as well, and from the same place, and in the same color as the grout. Just about all grout manufacturers now make their caulkings with antimicrobial agents in them to put a stop to mold and mildew. Do we fill the tub with water before caulking? If it's cast enamel, it's not necessary. If it's plastic or fiberglass, you'd do alot better to make sure the installer supports the "belly" of the tub with mortar or foam. It'll go alot further than filling the tub. The reason for filling the tub is so that excessive movement won't stretch the caulking past its limits. Even a better idea is to limit said movement (which is what you do by supporting the bottom of the tub). Also, I remember a thread mentioning using caulk instead of grout in the "corners," but I am not sure if that means just the bottom corners, or the whole vertical seams where the back and side walls of tile meet. Any place where one wall meets another, or a wall meets a floor (or in this case the tub), it should be caulked....See MorePure white tile 18x18 or larger
Comments (1)"Chinese" can be good, bad or indifferent. Try for a porcelean tile, if you can. When you see them, take ten or so of them and rotate them a bit and then look for excessive "lippage".....in other words, see if there is noticable variations in the size. This determins how well they will follow a decent grout joint. Also, look for curves in the tile.....for the same reason. Good luck!...See Moreneed color suggestions to go with busy tile
Comments (23)Annie, thanks for the paint suggestions, the coral color you suggested is quite subtle and nice. the coral idea is definitely growing on me! judithn, i think the pink and green palette might work for me-- it feels like it will be fun and unexpected, which I can probably get away with for a laundry room or kid's room. tinker_2006, i mulled over the tile for a while and just feel i can live with it (maybe not love it) in the laundry room. I definitely didn't want it in my bath though!). donating is a great idea though, thanks! if i make the laundry room fun, i think DH and I both can actually like it a lot. while not a laundry room, what do you all think of this room? it is so serene and fresh with the coral and green palette. I like the wall color too. Any ideas as to what color it might be? Comments (4)Did you decide on a plan that separates the dining room wall cabinets from the rest of the perimeter? Or do you have some other plan to transition from white to cherry at the corner? Our perimeter cabs are mostly fir on 2 sides, burgundy on the 3rd side, with a cream island. Here are some others that may not be cherry, but will give you the idea with a rich wood and white/cream island.
