I do not use Opera so never used speed dial but I have had an account at netvibes for quite some time, does sorta the same as you have there, I just put all the sites I like on my netvibes page, have it set up with different "pages" for different categories. One page is all my news, one page is all my linux sites, one page is all my security info, etc.
I could make it my home page but I don't I just keep it up on my bookmarks toolbar and with one click I have it all right at my finger tip. netvibes is free and very easy to use and add stuff to.

There are so many of these type of sites.

I just wanted one that looked and worked like speed dial.

I also wanted one that had a button that you could click on in your tool bar, when you are on a page and it would automatically add it to your launch page.

Not only does it put the page on your launch site when you 'click' the button .. It takes a snapshot of the page and that is what is displayed in the short-cut window.

(Did any of that make sense?) LOL

BTW: Firefox just started using a similar program like opera's speed dial.

FWIW, in Iron and Opera (which I use most of the time) I have no Speed Dial showing. Instead, I have my bookmarks bar filled with shortcuts/icons. I can fit about 30 of them along there (and more, of course, can be hidden behind the >> button when the bar itself gets full). Plus, the bookmark bar is always showing, so I can keep middle-clicking a whole bunch of links to get them to open in the background, so they're waiting for me when I'm ready for them ! :-)

I use my bookmark bar also in firefox and love that feature. I create folders on it with my various categories, one for forums where I have all my forums links, one for mail where I have all my mail links, I also have one for daily in there I put all the links I like to look at every day, then when I ope up in the morning I go to that folder in my bookmark bar and right click and choose open all in tabs and voila there they all are open in tabs.

Since you both utilize bookmarks alot, have you tried Delicious?

You sign up and add a 'Bookmark On Delicious' button to your tool bar.

Clicking that button will bring up a screen where you will see a box with the sites url (the one you are saving) and you can then add a 'Tag' to the bookmark and it will be saved to your bookmark/delicious page.

You also have a button for 'Go To My Delicious' on your tool bar which is just like using your opera or firefox book-marker except on Delicious the bookmarks can be in the thousands and organized in any order you choose.

I use the 'only2clicks' for a Quick Launch page .. not a book-marker.

If none of what I said about Delicious made any sense to you .. it is well worth visiting (for you book-marking junkies) for a look.

If anyone knows of a bookmarking site where you can actually put your saved sites into folders .. would you please let me know?

I use to have a site like that but .. When I got away from webtv .. I lost that kind of book-marker.

(It was a built in app on the webtv unit)

The delicious link looks interesting and I may avail myself of its services some time in the future. For now, though, I don't have need of online bookmarking.

Maybe it's some weird (or false) sense of security I get keeping them in my browser. (An odd way to be, for sure, since I have no problem with using webmail, which keeps my email online ! Hmmmm....)

Not2bright nothing odd about it at all. I never put anything online other than through a couple of webmail addresses and those are for places like Gardenweb where log in is needed. I store my things where I am in control, my computer.

You are only saving webpages (web-sites), not personal information so what can happen?

Probably nothing. And in my case I'm really not that concerned about it for the very reason you state. I may even try it out in the future.

No, my first reaction was simply that I'm so used to bookmarks being a very simple thing to store in a browser (for me, on the bookmarks bar), that I don't think I would at this time need to look into any online storage of such -- except, again, for curiosity's sake. And I am kinda curious about the Delicious link you provided so I will be checking it out. :-)

oh yes I have known of Delicious for years, use it on occasion to look for stuff, I do not put mine on it however.

I use xmarks which does create a webpage for me with all of my bookmarks on it so that I can access my bookmarks from any pc anywhere by logging on to my xmarks page, plus it makes it very easy to set up a new pc with all my bookmarks by simply putting the xmarks add on in the browser and it takes care of everything else. It is also now available for IE too. The page xmarks sets up however is totally private and you log into it with a user name and password. I too much prefer to keep all of my bookmarks private.

I don't understand what you mean, I use firefox and all of my bookmarks are set up in folders. I created the folders then any time I want to save a bookmark I select the folder to save it to. My xmarks is saved the exact same way of course since it just clones it.
I do not have any "loose" bookmarks everything is in a labeled folder specific to that selection. Some of the various folders would be: forums, mail, music, purchases, security, linux, windows, games, recipes, etc. In those I save any bookmarked page that is relevant to that category.
I also use the tags and keywords in firefox when I bookmark a site so that if I need to do a search for it in my bookmarks I just go to organize bookmarks and then do a search for that tag or keyword to bring up related sites.

My Ie faves are also set up in folders but I rarely use it.
