waste king l-8000 versus isi excel 1 hp disposals

The thing I am most curious about between these 2 is how loud the Waste King is compared to the ISi Excel. There is a considerable price difference between the 2 but given we are doing a $35K kitchen remodel not sure $180 is that significant if the WK is a lot louder. I have heard the demo setups for the ISI which seems very loud compared to my current badger disposal. I don't need quiet as a mouse but also don't want another jet taking off like we have now. We have a WK 1hp batch feed disposal and it is really quiet. Our house is completely open concept and sound really carries but no-one even notices when I'm running the disposal. HTH

You generally only run a disposal for a few seconds at a time. Does the noise really matter?

I just replaced the Badger 5 that was installed in the 10-year-old home that I just bought. It was leaking out the bottom of the motor. The replacement I chose was the Waste King 9940, which has a lifetime in-home warranty. Works fine. I was surprised that it is louder than the Badger was, unless there is water covering the drain. Not a big deal, though. The one thing I wanted to point out for DIYers is that I was surprised to find that the particular 9940 I bought plugs in rather than being direct wired like my Badger was. I elected to keep the unit and convert my wiring to an outlet to make it easier to service in the future. Based upon the instruction manual, I'm guessing that it is available in a direct wired format, too. I would think there would be a model number difference, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. As for the EZ-mount vs 3-prong, it seems much ado about nothing to me. The 3-prong is very simple to install. The most difficult part of the process was disassembling the mount from the motor before installation. The directions failed to mention loosening the ring clamp around the rubber mount before attempting to pull it off the motor. It only mentioned lining up the 3 tabs.

To come to Jerrods' defense, he is a long time member of this forum and provides very valuable information. The price for the Waste King is really low and half the regular price anywhere else from Costo. That is a really good deal. I recently purchased a Franke GD which is made by Waste King also. I have not installed it and therefore cannot tell you how it works. I was recently at a friends who had the top of the line Evolution series installed and it was really quiet. I may return the Franke and get the InSinkerator although it is more expensive. For $99 from Costo, I don't knmow if you can really go wrong with the Waste King. If you get it and don't like it then you can always return it to Costco. Good luck!

I can say from experience that the Insinkerator Evolution Pro Excel is very quiet. Much quieter than any other disposal I've experienced, although a tad louder than a Miele dishwasher. Even the rubber collar at the sink drain is designed to cause flowing water to block upward propagating sound. (This does lead to having to push smaller items such as piles of tea leaves through it rather than expecting them to flow through as they would have on the older design drain collars.) NOTE however, that the distance from the drain to the exit port is slightly larger than for a standard disposal, and if your plumbing trap weir location is just adequate for a standard design, it may not be easily adaptable to the Evolution. If your weir is presently at least an inch or so below the port of your present disposal, then it should be ok. I have found good prices at PEX Supply. kas

I have a Waste King 3/4 hp batch feed disposal which is 9 years old, and I have never had one problem with it. I grind all sorts of things including banana peels, chicken bones, pineapple skins (though not the pineapple top), and have been doing so since it was installed. Also note the excellent reviews on the OP's link above. Nerdyshopper - Waste King offers long warranties for in-home service. My 3/4 hp disposal has a 10-year warranty. The 1 hp Waste King that MizLizzie linked has a lifetime in-home warranty. Why didn't you make use of your Waste King's warranty? To anyone considering the Waste King L-8000 1 hp continuous feed disposal linked by the OP, make sure to note its dimensions. fabb.. thanks for the feedback Is appreciated. Our current Badger is loud enough to make it hard to hear the TV in the next room, etc. and can be annoying, especially if running alot of food through such as watermelon rinds, etc. Makes it difficult to have a conversation. I'll no doubt have similar questions regarding the hood liner we will be buying as I'll want good flow without tons of excessive noise.. heard one on Friday that sounded like a jet on take off!

Weissman, not sure thanks is on order but thanks just the same. Yes, noise is a concern for us and if buying a new disposal I would just as soon buy a quiet one as I had another noisy badger. The Waste King is significantly cheaper than is the ISI Excel though I understand it does not come with a stainless steel flange which is something I'llneed to factor in on the pricing part ( for now am assuming the Excel does come with a stainless steel flange ).

Thanks for the feedback though. Sounds like the WK is doing a great job at a reasonable pric epoint!

No thanks necessary :-). I can understand being concerned about hood noise but I really do think that a disposal is run for such a short period of time that it really doesn't make a difference.

We have the Insinkerator, and the thing is really quiet,if you forget and leave the stopper plug in the side of the sink where the ISI is, it would be very easy to forget it is on, and in fact when you turn off the faucet over the ISI, you gotta listen pretty intently to know it is running, so no complaints here.

Weissman.... no doubt your point is valid and is easy to get too anal retentive when trying to build a new kitchen... many times I forget about what garbage I presently have in the ssearch for something better, and $100 here and there does add up. A disposal obviously is run for shorter times than say a range hood. Sounds like either of these will work.

Dodge.... thx.. sounds, pun intended, like the Excel is about as quiet as they come.
