Jerry I do not know if they can be removed, someone else may come up with that solution.

However if you right click on the left pointing arrowhead you can customise your icons and make that annoying one always hidden.

Please excuse my ignorance, if this be the case. My following comments concern the TASKBAR and not a Toolbar. My Taskbar (in the lower right corner) contains 3 icons/buttons; volume, AVG (virus software) and Zonealarm (firewall). I believe that all are in my Startup programs and can be removed by eliminating them from the Startup process. AVG and Zonealarm can also be eliminated after bootup screen by right clicking the icon and exiting the program. I believe the volume button is there from the Startup program process, can be removed there, but cannot be removed by right clicking. If I am correct then you should be able to remove them from showing by changing the Startup program process. For the Epson you can use the desktop icon or use Start (lower left corner) and selecting Printers and Faxes to do stuff with the Epson. But if you are, in fact, referring to a Toolbar rather than Taskbar, I think you can eliminate the Toolbar by right clicking an open space in the Taskbar and removing the Toolbar.

The part of the taskbar on the right that contains the clock is the system tray or systray. A search for delete systray icon may help, but I don't think there is an easy solution that will work in every case.

Jerry, you should be able to click start/run/type> msconfig
and under the startup tab, uncheck whatever you don't want to run at startup. If they don't run at startup, they won't be in the system tray.

Indeed, I am talking about the taskbar or perhaps the sytem tray. On the computer I am now on there are about 20 icons present, included my dial-up, which goes away when I hand up, my Ethernet, both wired and wireless, my mouse configuration utility and others.

I'll look at start-up and the link kindly provided. The only icon I (she, my wife) want to get rid of is the second Epson icon with isn't connected to anything.

You could look in the control panel under printers and faxes and see if the Epson printer is installed twice. If there is an extra printer showing, just right click it and delete.

Randy, I went into the control panel, printers and faxes and it looked like you had it "nailed". There were (are) two Epson icons, one for the printer as default and one as "copy 1", just what I wanted to get rid of. I right clicked, picked delete and confirmed. The icon was not deleted, so I went to the menue and picked" delete this printer. I was again asked to confirm, I did, and the icon remains.

I dunno, if you removed the copy 1 printer, next time you bootup, the icon should be gone.

Nope, reboot doesn't help after repeated "deletes" under Control Panel/Printers. The Epson is not in the Program->Start-up. I'll get a copy of the utility that looks "deeper" than MS provides and see if I can find any duplicate there.

Don't know if it would help, but I would completely delete the printer, run ccleaner, then reinstall the printer.

jerry, if I interpret your last posting correctly, looking at START -> ALL PROGRAMS -> STARTUP, will not show all of the programs that run when you boot the computer. Try the START -> RUN then type in msconfig as the file to OPEN. This will result in a System Configuration Utility screen. Click the STARTUP tab and look at the files that have a check mark in the box to run on startup. If there is one there that smells like epson, that probably is the culprit. The files there are uniquely named and if you are unsure as to whether to uncheck a file, there are a number of websites that identify the programs and tell if it is okay to uncheck them, e.g., answersthatwork.com.

Thanks, you correctly understood my lack of lack of expertise on what MS provides for checking on Boot start-up. I'll take a look per your helpful instructions next time I'm not that computer.

Just for the "record", Run>Msconfig>Start-up doesn't show Epson at all. So, it seems, the two icons in the tray get there some other way.

We can live with it, may have to as a practical matter, just trying to clean the tray up a bit.

owbist, looks like you've found a good survey of the subject of this thread, including the proper/correct names for those areas of the screen, i.e., task bar, with system tray being the right hand area of my recent concern. Now if I could only remember these names, it would be some much easier/clear when I try to write about an issue in this area.

I'll give the provided information more study, but I think I have one of those "it got there by the application (Epson) installation program".

I'll tell you where it's at in the registry.
click start/run/type> regedit
find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\DevModes2
and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings
That's where you will have 2 printers listed.
Just right click on the printer you don't want and delete the key.

Thanks, I have been in a Registry a few times, but I am always a bit worried about what may happen. I'll make a back-up copy, but think I can get back to the XP back-up by simply doing a restore, if I don't like what happens after making registry changes.
