Run a Malwarebytes scan from the admin account.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

You can use any XP Pro CD to re-install your Windows. You MUST use the registration numbers on the sticker underneath the computer because this is tied to the motherboard - NOT the numbers for the CD you are using. This is quite legitimate. Before or after visit the site below and grab the needed drivers being sure to stay with XP drivers. I like to get those before I start on a computer so I know what I have and can hopefully work around any difficulties I may encounter.

You will then need to update you Windows and even if the CD is SP3 there are close to 100 updates to install.

Personally, if I were going to reinstall using an OEM copy of XP Pro, I'd go to the Lenovo site above and get all the drivers for the R51 (WinXP) and burn them to a CD. Then when you do the reinstall, you have the CD on hand, in case the ethernet or wireless is not working

before going the drastic route of re-installing an os have you tried doing a simple system restore to an earlier time when things worked?
And most definitely run malwarebytes and some online AV scans.

Bunky, many people have been in the same situation. Downloading a malware scanning program sounds like a great idea until you loose internet access on the computer.

I would try to download some anti-virus and malware scanning software from another computer and transfering it to your system with a flash drive or CD-R disc. I would also try to borrow a Windows XP Professional installation disc from a friend or relative. It will allow you to run commands from the Recovery Console and may accept your product key if you have to reinstall.

I just purchased a new laptop and one of the priorities in my selection was a reinstallation DVD for the operating system. Many systems include a recovery partition, but an OS disc is a necessity when it comes to hard drive crashes and some malware infections.

you said the wireless does not work but it sounded like you could connect so you have tried using it with a wired connection directly to the router?

some options for if you can not connect, to burn from another pc or use from a flash drive.

Ok well I ran malwarebytes and it found 30 infections and I deleted those and then restarted no fix

Then I ran pc doctor for windows and it came up with a SMART short Self test fail This appears to be a failing Hard drive,

Are you saying you never used the option to fix those 30 infections or Malwarebytes never removed them?

I think I would visit the hard drive manufacturers site and run their diagnostic before buying a new hard drive. Not suggesting the facts you see are wrong but who knows?

well I think your problem is the infections that is a LOT of infection, malwarebytes will clean it if you tell it to and then restart, I would definitely work on the clean up that could be the full problem, infection will make a lot of stuff not pass tests and give bad results.
If you had that kind of infection rate you need to go to get help from LzD and run some specialized scans on that pc.

Well I ran Malwarebytes again it came up with no infections, I still cannot hook to the internet via Wireless or ethernet cable

Wireless keep saying acquiring address and the ethernet line say cable unplugged..

Tomorrow I'm going to get a Windows XP pro install disc and try a new fresh install

Before you reformat the drive, I would right-click "My Computer" from the start menu and select Manage from the list. Open Device Manager. Click on each device category and write down the manufacture and model number listed.

Knowing the hardware specs will help you find drivers if they are not loaded by plug and play. When I reinstall a system I always get one or two devices in which the driver didn't load.

I find the easiest way to restore a Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad (that is, if not using the system restore partition or media) is to download the network card drivers from their site to a memory key or other storage first. Next, wipe the drive (Active Kill Disk or whatever) then load the o/s up from scratch. Install the network card drivers that were downloaded earlier.

Once online, download and install Lenovo "System Update" software and run it. It will check what drivers are necessary and you can cherry pick what you need. Bios updates are also available via this route.
