usb 3 is backwards compatible with usb 2&1. I don't understand either why you would want to go such a long circuitous route to get files from one pc to an external hard drive. Simply plug in the external hard drive usb plug into the Dell windows 7 pc usb port,create a folder on the external drive naming it ever you want, then either drag and drop the files you want to transfer or right click on the file and select send to and choose the external hard drive from the options. just be sure anytime you use a usb port to use the safely remove options so nothing is damaged. once you have something plugged in your usb port it will put that option down in the system tray. you said are things on the Dell you don't want to move to the external hard drive well just don't move them there you have to pick and choose what you want to move.

No problem, Breenthumb - I was looking for a much simpler answer, anyway. On my old PC I could press Cont-Alt-Delete and get a list of what was running--maybe 8 items. Doing that on XP gives me a list a mile long. I was hoping for some way to figure out what was what on that list, and could "end task" whatever was going on that I didn't need at the moment.
