If you're doing square foot gardening because that's all the space you have to let your melons grow, you'll definitely want to trellis them. From my experience, melons are one of the more finicky things to trellis but it works. But you'll want to check every few days to see if there are melons growing which need support. I just tear pieces of old clothes to the right size and tie them up to the trellis (because I'm cheap/lazy). I'm sure there are more attractive/professional-looking options but this works for me.
