Bill V or others: Tile sealing question

Hi Bill and others,

I bought a beige, Turkish marble that we are using on our bathroom floor, bathroom shower walls, and kitchen floor. How do I know if it needs to be sealed? I have no idea what kind of marble this is, although it appears to be polished. It looks a bit like a crema marfil. Any advice is appreciated!!!

I'll tell you right now, it's a good idea to seal it. The only stone where there's a question is granite.

Thank you, Bill!!!! What do you recommend I use to seal it? Is there a difference between sealants? Will the stone color change at all (just want to know what to expect...). You're so gret for helping all of us newbies!

Ahhh-got it! So Aqua Mix is good for pre grouting. Do I need to use another sealer for the stone after grouting or w/the Aqua Mix pre grout be sufficient?

HI-old thread but wondering if there are any new product recommendations for honed marble? I would like to seal our marble pre-grouting. Then post-grout too unless that is not recommended?? Also-Is there any downside to sealing the marble before it is applied to the wall? Thanks very much!!!

I agree. This slab install we polished the ends as well - don't you love the clear look trim on this fireplace! This install was 6 pieces of tarvertine installed onsite. If you look close at the fireplace in this picture you will see we polished the top stone to lap the skinny piece. Travertine is soft and the quality of the sealers and filler varies. The look of this install was enhanced because we ordered a 40% waste factor. We Cherry picked the stone and spent 4 hours doing layout. The extra waste stone will become a laundry room floor. What type of fireplace is it? Make sure to test the effects of heat on your tile. Place a few in front and bring the fire up to full heat for a number of burn cycles. Get one tile set loosely above the fireplace for the same test. Test with the sealer as well. I case you didn't know - I build a lot of fireplaces - I just don't talk about it. I hear Mike Holmes next issue will talk about fireplace renovations. Lets see what the "Experts" have to say... ;)

Sanded grout, which has...tada...sand in it...is used in grout joints 1/8" and wider. The sand is a bulk filler. It minimizes shrikage cracking as the grout cures. The particles of sand will often give sanded grout a rougher texture than unsanded. Unsanded grout is made of a finer particulate, no sand filler, in general it is smoother. But it's for joints smaller than 1/8". While there are varying degrees of "smooth", sanded doesn't always have to be rough-rough like coarse sand paper. Some of the finer particles can be washed away when too much water, or too heavy a hand with the sponge, is used during clean up. Or the finer particles can be dissolved away by acid cleaners, leaving a rougher surface. Epoxies will be smooth. I'm not terribly familiar with Tec. But I've never had a problem with Laticrete.

It depends on which product you use as to whether or not the apearance will change. If you use an enhancer, it'll stay pretty close to what it looks like when you first seal it. If you use a normal penetrating seler, it'll go back to the way it looks right now when it dries.

Thanks, Bill. I'd like it to stay the same. Can you recommend a good, normal penetrating sealer?

Bill,

Another question about sealing marble, if you don't mind: What type of sealer do you recommend if you want enhancing properties? We recently had Crema Marfil put in our master bathroom (on the vanity) and our fabricator thought it would look better honed and I trusted that I'd like it. Unfortunately, I'm not crazy about the look as it too so much of the color out of it (it's such a "quiet" marble anyway that I feel like it robbed it of any beauty it had in the first place!).

Also, where do you purchase these sealers? Do places like Lowes or Home Depot carry them?

If you go to HD or Lowes, look for products from wither Miracle or Aquamix called Enrich and Seal, or Enhance and Seal.
