Sharp Microwave Drawer

Any experiences with the Sharp microwave drawer? I heard it had prior opening/closing problems. Did that get resolved?

Hi!
We installed the Sharp MD in May & have been very happy. We did have an maintenance issue with the automatic opening/closing. Sharp sent a technician out to correct it as soon as we reported it. The problem for our Drawer seemed to be in the way a gear was designed. The technician replaced a part & it works fine. The microwave continued to function while the door was operated manually.

Our model was manufactured July 2009 (date inside near model & serial #s).

We put a microwave in our island 5 years ago when we were building the house we live in now. The drawer one wasn't around yet, so we put a standard one in and ordered a special faceplate to go around it. The faceplate cost more than the microwave! Anyway, we love it in that spot. The kids don't have to climb on the counters to use it! One thing, if you have smaller kids, they will push the buttons when you are aren't looking! Mine are older, but little guests sometimes do. No it was new, purchased in end of April 2017, installed in July of 2017. Fire on Oct 24, 2017. No cabinet damaged, thank goodness!! I was melting butter in Pyrex, 12 seconds in it made a weird rattling noise then all this black smoke started pouring out. I stood there in a bit of a panic about to dial 911 (that’s how thick the smoke was). Had extinguisher on hand and decided to open drawer, cleared smoke out and well butter was still cold. It was so weird. Glad it happened to me and not one of the kids. I have had some bad luck with almost all my new appliances but this one wins for the worst and the worst customer service.

"I'm wondering why Sharp doesn't clarify in the specs that this microwave should be installed between two cabinets or have an end panel to hide the side better." Perhaps it's because Sharp supports flush-mounting the oven which would eliminate the problem. However every photo of the oven I looked at does show it installed between other appliances or cabinets, or with an end panel. (I'm thinking that the oven's top, horizontal trim is there to push the front of the oven out so that the tilt-out control panel isn't hidden by a countertop installed above it.) @nhb22: "Does that mean it does not have a timer?" No, it has a tilt-out control panel with the usual microwave controls (start/stop, timer, power level, etc.).

Funny how an "alleged defect" resulted in a $114 million dollar settlement. Of course that is the maximum and Sharp will probably keep that down in the $10 million dollar range. When you consider the price (and profit margins) on these things, that is chump change. Would I trust a "Y" model that was manufactured over the same years? I guess the answer to that is obvious. On one of the primary sites reporting on the settlement is someone reporting a Y model with arcing and premature failure.

I've got one of the original ones and it's been doing fine for some time now. The main problem was people stripping the mechanism by pulling and pushing the drawer pen and closed when it wasn't designed for it. It took repeated abuse to create a problem. A couple of the rocket scientists who worked on my kitchen pulled it open even after I had just told them don't pull it open and they didn't kill it.

Yes, ours is the larger version. I am getting a lot in it (casseroles, etc.) & tall cups & bowls, as well. I also am able to wipe the sides & top clean.

I have found that if I don't want it to open all the way I can press the "open" or "close" button & it will stop part way -- sometimes I don't need full access to the drawer, but 2/3 to 3/4 of the space will allow me to take out what I have in it. It is nice to have the added flexibility.
