Floor to ceiling 18' travertine tiles in 5' x 8' bathroom

I have a remodel underway. The bathroom is 5' x 8'. I have a great eye, but no experience, and made all the design decisions alone, and for the first time.

My goal was to get a spa/hotel-like feeling. Very minimalist. The original plan was to go all the way up the wall in the shower, and halfway up the wall throughout the rest of the room. Along the way I decided to tile all the way up the wall for a full floor to celing look.

Well, they have started, and there's no going back. I never thought about or allocated for, the (at least) 1/2 inch adhesive that they are using to hold the tiles in place. The tiles are 1/2" thick, and I was prepared to give up that space, but with the adhesive, I am now giving up around 2" of the 60" wide bathroom. All mirrors and lighting are removed, and I hope that when they go back up, the cavernous feeling will go away. There will be a large vanity mirror, a mirrored medicine cabinet, and there is a skylight. The fixtures will be shiny chrome--I'm hoping that will help.

If I could go back, knowing what I know now, I would have only tiled the floor. Can anyone make me feel better?

Atleast by using the heavy amount of thinset, the tiles will be nice and flat and plumb! :-)

They ARE using thinset, right? (comes in a bag and is mixed on site, and not mastic-- already mixed in a pail)

Bill, I wish I knew the answer to that. This is a 1 br 1 bath condo, and I am at a hotel while the work is completed. I will find out. The person doing the work has an artistic eye, and I have no complaints about his beautiful work--everything looks plumb. Right now, the tile still has the plastic spacers, the lighting and mirrors are not in, and I am hoping it all comes together.

Oops lillo, I made a mistake. My reno started on Monday, but moving quickly. They demo'd to the studs. Tub, drain and valves in, walls back up (except vanity wall), electrical done and tile is up on the long tub wall. This morning I am thinking of still going with the 12x12 brick pattern on the floor. I thought it would be too much pattern with the subway wall tiles, but the subway is only in the tub area and should be covered with a shower curtain (if my kids remember!). I took a few pics on my phone but have to get them on my computer. I have planned sand colored ceramic subway tiles with a sandy/concrete colored porcelain floor. Colonial cherry double vanity with a beige marble top. White Toto toilet and white sinks. I originally planned sconces, but because of a pipe in the way I can only use overhead fixtures. My goal today is to find robe/towel hooks. I empathize with you about your tile floor decision (other post). Selecting the tile was my most time consuming decision. Natural stone was not an option for me because of maintenance issues and well water staining. I would have loved to go with basic white subways, but am afraid of staining. Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! You succeeded very well in getting the look you wanted while saving money along the way. Congratulations, and thank you for the pictures and great detail and supply list.

Late to the party, but here is the downstairs bath after the floor was redone as part of the remodel last year. I was intrigued as I'm dealing with another similar sized bath and was considering large scale planks. I noticed only the one other example of very small tile. This is basketweave, mixed Carrera/Nero. I don't know if the pattern expands or shrinks the space. The width is about six feet in total, and as shown, 52 inches wide. Like pal said you could make it a wet room. You could look for pictures of bathrooms on boats for inspiration. When I did college visits with my daughter, one of our hotel rooms had a tiny bathroom. (Kellogg Center at Michigan State, if by any chance you happen to live near there.) I wish I hadn't deleted the pics I took but I'll try to describe... front left corner was the door; back left corner was sink; back right corner was toilet. The shower was in the front right corner with a ceiling mounted shower head. There was a ceiling mounted track for a shower curtain and a drain in that area. When the curtain was open it was not at all in the way and the shower floor space just became part of the room. (There was no curb or step around the shower it was just one continuous floor in the bathroom.) There was a teak mat in front of the sink in case the whole floor got wet. I don't remember but I'm sure the floor had to be slightly sloped toward the drain. I wouldn't want it as my only bathroom but it certainly worked for our short term use and I think would work OK for occasional use. Your layout above would not work with a walled shower because, as mentioned, you wouldn't have room to get to the toilet. But with a ceiling mounted shower head (so it sprays down, not out toward the room) and a ceiling mounted track for a shower curtain that you could push aside, it *might* work. Obviously the floor would need to slope toward a drain under the shower head.

I am a fan of floor to ceiling tiles. It actually makes the room look larger. Also the larger tiles you are using will give you the spa look.

I cant wait to see how it all turns out. sounds like it will be a clean, spa look...

When I read the subject I was thinking about the same:while floor-to-tile is great for a minimalistic look it eats an extra couple inches in the process.

I've got a very similar bath that I did few months back. We did not do floor-to-ceiling tiles but making the space look wider was certainly on our mind.

I'm guessing that your vanity will be along the long wall (there's not much scope to have it anywhere else). A large mirror (not a framed one; because framed ones tend to run small and do not cover wall-to-wall expanse) covering a considerable expanse of the wall would open up the space. As an example, our mirror runs across the vanity and stretches all the way over the toilet; and ends where shower tiles begin. Height-wise, it starts just above the vanity and extends upto a light fixture.

Also, Choose bath rugs etc that could be laid in a linear pattern across the floor -- they will streth the eye sideways.

Don't worry; you will be fine after the mirror. A mirror does open up the space. Do post pix for us all to see!

Homey bird-- Thank you for your comments. I did make the mistake of choosing a framed mirror and now I'm on the frantic hunt for a frameless one instead. There will be a three tier towel bar over the toilet, in polished Chrome, and I hope that will pull light in.

Well the spacers are out, and the grout is in. Gorgeous! I am no longer worried. The sun pouring through the skylight onto the stone is beautiful, and suprisingly the dark wood framed mirror,(it's large) looks perfect. I promise to post pics.

Our shower door company does mirrors also. I have a 36" x 66" mirror with beveled edge over our 66" vanity. I think it was less than $125.
