Video Viewing Problem

On my previous computer with Win XP and a 20 inch monitor, I could go to YouTube and watch videos with no problem. I know that videos aren't always of the best quality, but the ones I watched were mostly clear, sharp and bright. I now have a new computer with Win7 with a 21.5 inch widescreen monitor. Now, the videos at YouTube are out of focus and very dark. Even some photos are fuzzy. I have the latest Flash Player version/update. The resolution on my monitor is 1920 x 1080, which is what is recommended.

Is there anything I can I do to get back good quality videos?

You've left out the most important equation in diagnosing the problem .. Are you running your video/display through a video card or are you using Onboard/Integrated graphics?

Sorry about that. The Video Card that came installed is an ATT Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3. I have no idea how good that one is supposed to be.

In case you might need this info, my computer is a Dell XPS 8300/Win 7 Home Premium 64bit/1TB HD/Intel Core i5-2400 processor/6GB RAM.

do you click on the start icon on the bottom of the video screen to start the play back? Some browsers have settings that start video automatically some you have to hit the start button on the video, some sites also have them start automatically some not so it is usually in the settings of how to play a video. Your Aol is probably set to start playback immediately.

Open Windows Explorer (easiest to right click on Start and left click on Explore). Click on Tools and Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab and scroll down to GIF and click to highlight it. Click the Change button and select the application that you want it to open with. Repeat with all of the affected file types and click Apply. That should do it. Pam

How fast is your Internet connection? When you watch a video, what is actually happening is that the video file is being streamed (downloaded) to your computer. If you don't have a fast connection and/or if the video is higher quality (meaning a larger file size) then the file can't be downloaded fast enough. When it pauses, it is "buffering", which means that the rest of the video file is still donwnloading and that's why you can't watch it...it isn't there yet. There are two solutions: 1) get a faster Internet connection, or 2) hit the pause button at the beginning of the video and leave it paused for a minute or two so that more of the video file is downloaded and you can then watch it without it hesitating. When you pause most videos, you can see the progress of the download as a shaded bar that crawls across the bottom of the video window. You don't have to wait until the whole bar is shaded (meaning it's 100% downloaded): you just have to wait long enough so that the progress of the download stays ahead of the progression of the video. Does that make sense to you? The next time you want to watch a video, look closely at the bottom of the video window and you should see what I mean.

Nero and Roxio are both Video editing programs, both do about the same, except Roxio can compile video files (VOB's) without re encoding them. get out the manual and see what type of video files your DVD players accepts. IE Mpg's or AVI's or hopefully DIVX as these are very easy to compile and fast to burn and are smaller files but with excellent quality. Outside of DIVX, the best Video editing program I have found is Magix Good luck, Gary Gary

Figuring out monitor or video problems are almost impossible for anyone who can't actually 'see' the problem but .. we can try!

I guess the first thing to check would be to see if you have the latest 'driver' for your graphics card.

While I'm thinking about it: How is your computer and monitor connected? (HDMI,VGA etc. etc.)

I would suspect the video card. At first glance seeing 1 gig of video memory creates a 'Wow' but on closer inspection it is the lowest of all video cards offered for that model.

My connection is VGA. I have the latest drivers. It sounds like I may need to upgrade to a better Video Card. I hope that is all it is, even though it will cost more money.

Since the drivers are up to date and the card and pc are new .. I don't believe that it's the card.

I have run computers that ran totally with the 'onboard' graphics chip and if you weren't into extreme gaming .. the display was fine!
Any card is MUCH more preferable than the onboard and even though the card you have is low end .. the display Should look much better than you describe.

Disconnect the cable from "both ends" of your pc and monitor.
Carefully check the 'pins' on each connector.

Once you have made sure that the pins are all there and solid .. (not bent or loose) .. try this: You should have a port connection for the 'onboard' graphics?

Connect the cable back up to your monitor and then connect the other end of the cable to your 'onboard' graphics port and see if you get better results.

If you get a better display, we can go from there.

BTW: MAKE SURE that you do ALL of the above "With The PC Powered OFF"!

Justme4now, nothing made a difference. Videos are still awful. What can I do next?

Also, there's another issue. I wanted to handle one problem at a time, but I'll mention this one now. There's no sound on my computer at all. I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio installed. I checked the speaker connection, and it is tight. My speakers are old, but they worked fine on my old computer right up until the day it crashed. Any ideas?
