Problem viewing Photobucket video in FF

After a frustrating day of trying to upgrade from IE6 to IE7 (never could get the click on links to work), I decided to finally switch to Firefox 3.5.3 since many of you are very positive about it. It's a learning curve, however.

My question: what do I need to install or change in order to view photobucket video in Firefox? Presently when I click on a photobucket video using Firefox, I get a constantly circling "Loading" graphic and the Status bar reads "Read pic.photobucket.com"

I did uninstall IE7; now I can't view photobucket video in IE6 either.

There is no problem with youtube videos on either FF or IE6. I also have no problem viewing photobucket pictures in either browser.

Info: XP with automatic updates; McAfee Suite, Malwarebytes, Super Antispyware, Spyware Blaster

Photobucket is a site where people upload photos, and now videos. They can link these photos and/or videos to relevant topics at other web sites. People on the gardenweb forums use it to post pictures. I view videos at a hummingbird forum (or rather, I used to view them!).

The link below is to some videos at Photobucket. All I can see are rotating "Loading" icons.

Using Firefox, I have downloaded Adobe Flash and also the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin which shows up in Tools/Plugins.

Some of the things I've tried:

Uninstalled Adobe Flash (using Revouninstaller) and reinstalled several times.

Used the Adobe removal tool to hopefully remove any leftovers from previous versions.

Reinstalled in Safe Mode

Done a "flushdns" procedure that I read about

Ran a thorough Malwarebytes scan

I also tried other tweaks which I didn't document because I thought "this is the one that will fix it". Now, many tweaks later, I see that I should have kept better records.

When trying to view a video, I can see a progression of messages in the Status Bar (the last being "Done") but I never see anything beyond the "Loading" icon where the video should be.

Thank you very much for your comments. Babka, I am also thinking about that option to go back to Firefox 3.6. I will do that when I can not solve my problem per Firefox Help. Steve and Babka, no, presently I do not want to get into Windows 7, Vista should work with FF4 per Paul. Today right after first going into Firefox I got into the formerly used version of Photobucket, but then Yahoo came and wanted to take over my world again. I needed to hit BACK 4 times to get out of that. So it seems I have to get rid of FF4 selecting Yahoo in this instant. When reading yesterday in the Firefox.com Help section under 'Yahoo problems', it seems I have to go into some 'Hyper code' (whatever that is) and delete 'Yahoo' there. There seems to be some standard Hyper code which selects automatically Yahoo. This seems to be the worst user unfriendly application I have ever seen, requiring me to become an operating system programmer. Paul, it might be that when you downloaded FF4, it set that 'Hyper code' correctly. But it is nice to know that you have it working, and I possibly will be able too. tj, thanks about mentioning this little icon "Web View". I saw some very small icons which were difficult to decipher. Anyway, I saw some more leafing-out hostas from SC at this nursery, but will leave it at that 'Sagae' I bought yesterday. So why should I think of some hypercode'? I get hyper thinking of that. Thanks for all the help. Bernd

Sounds like your browser cache is too small. Streaming Video's don't always clear with the normal clear cache method if they haven't completed the file download. They seem to have to grow a few hours old or age some time amount before they will clear. Its a good idea to let those streaming type video's reach their end and stop .. meaning watch the ending credits/music. This post was edited by mikie on Tue, Feb 12, 13 at 10:45

It is mind-boggling how many people surf the net for information, truly. And it seems unbelievable to us because we are reading threads with a number of recognizable (to us) names, like Annz and Parma and Flyleft and Moonshadow, Kswl and Amity.......etc. So, in our limited view, there are maybe a few dozen people that click on Favorite Yellows or Should I buy this Karastan Rug? But, for every person that posts, (you KNOW this is true since you do it all the time yourself) there are many, many, many, readers. Think of how many threads you read or links you access or stores you pop into due to a link at Garden Web..........but only read, do not comment. Well, multiply that by at least 100. And if you posted a photo in a thread, then, those 100 people who didn't comment, have all looked at your photo, thus creating a 'hit' on your picture site. I posted a recent shot on the "Does Anyone Want to Do a Photo Thread Again" thread on the Discussions side here. I had just uploaded the photo to a Picturetrail site I use. Today, Picturetrail sent me one of those notification emails to tell me that that photo already had like 300 views. Staggering, huh? I would have told my DD to wait till I could strike a nice modelesque pose had I known that it would end up on a little nonsense thread here. Anyway...........Does that mean everyone wanted to see ME? Well, no. (Tear in my left eye right now---catch in my voice.) It just means that anyone that scrolls down through that thread will see that photo. Thus, the hit. Now, for making your photos private. If you have young children and want them to stay off the Net, then, really, don't put them on the Net. Or make your private family shots private from the beginning. If you are posting photos of your bathroom paint job, or your kitchen cabinets or your new bedroom set, then, you probably want your album public for those pix. Otherwise, who's going to look at them? Your friends aren't caring about your living room redo on the net. They can go over to your house to see. Those photos are for us decorating crazies who need to see what shade of beige really works with maple cabinets, or how to accessorize a table in the living room just right. And while you may feel like you know Red or RenoFan or Organic and be happy to have them come see your new Marmoleum floor, you may feel less happy that 765 Anonymous People from all parts of the Planet also liked your Tyler Taupe bathroom and your new Antique white kitchen cabinets. But if you are careful with your pictures and try not to include anything truly private or potentially embarrassing, it ought not to be a big problem. Red

Photobucket is actually very reliable, have used it for 2 years with never one problem. The problem is many people using it don't understand how it works. Many people only use the free site which gives them limited space and they delete the photos to make room for more, and when you go to look for it, it is gone. Sometimes people post the wrong link because there are 4 or 5 to choose from under each photo in Photobucket. More often, it seems, people make changes to the photo, change the title of it or do something else to change it and this changes the "link" required to access it. The old one no longer works and people can't figure out why. If you want a photo on Photobucket to remain available you have to leave there and not change it. You can try emailing the original poster and ask them to post a new link to the photo. We just can't make people leave them them there untouched so we can access them later, unfortunately. I have also found a large number of photo links on the finished kitchen blog were wiped out when Yahoo closed their photo sharing site and most people have moved on with their lives since the remodel and either aren't aware of it or no longer care to take the time to replace them all with new links. If you try to access a link that no longer exists on Photobucket, you will probably get the home page, the same if they post the wrong type of link. The only part of the address that might still be valid is the part telling your computer that it needs to go to photobucket, the part telling where on photobucket to go is wrong and doesn't work. Sue

The photobucket videos are flash files.You can download the adobe flash player at Adobe Flash.

Looks like you have covered all the bases I'm not sure what else to tell you. Could be a photobucket issue??

are you certain you are getting the appropriate flash for the particular browser and the particular operating system you are using? you must be sure when you go to the flash download page to check that you are getting Firefox version or Ie version and which version is proper for your windows, for example do not get the linux version or the 64 bit version if you have a 32bit system.

try using ATF to clear your temps and cache for your browsers.

I just went to the photbucket link you provided and had no problem viewing the vids using my firefox.

do you have your firefox updated?

I am running FF 3.5.3 in Win XP SP3 and the vids play fine. If you have other add-ons/toolbars running in FF, you might consider removing them one by one...maybe one of them is conflicting with the Flash app. Do the vids play in Internet Explorer? If yes, my next move would be to uninstall FF and all add-ons/plugins with it and then reinstall the latest FF and only those plugins/add-ons that you are absolutely sure you need.

instead of removing all your add ons you can first try starting firefox in safe mode to do that go to start> all programs> find firefox in the list and one of the options that pop out is firefox safe mode, if it works in safe mode then it well could be one of your add ons conflicting

I just added Firefox for the first time this past weekend; it's version 3.5.3 which I believe is the latest.

At Adobe, I installed/reinstalled Flash Version 10.0.32.18. It is for Windows, Firefox, Safari and Opera. I also installed the Flash Player 10 PlugIn 10.0.32.18 which is for Firefox.

I tested at the Adobe site and they report Flash 10.0.32.18 was successfully installed.

I also checked C:\Windows/system32/Macromed/Flash and found Flash10c.ocx and NPSWF32.dll there.

During the time that I was still trying to get IE7 to work, I followed some directons using Start, Run and then entering each of the following separately, followed by clicking OK. They were

regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll

Success was reported with the 1st three, but on the last the message was: LoadLibrary ("msjava.dll") failed. The specified module could not be found.

I googled it and one site said it won't be found because MS's Java has been replaced by Sun's version. Another site listed programs it's known to affect - Macromedia Flash was on the list.

Since I recognized the work Java, I reinstalled that program just in case it might solve the video problem - it didn't.

Since this all began somewhere in the process of updating to IE7 (which I then uninstalled) I did reinstall IE7 hoping for a magic solution - it didn't happen. I do plant to continue with FF, however.

Is there a program (or maybe it's a tool that's already on my computer) that would show what's happening behind the scenes when the video is "loading"?

I was trying Firefox in Safe Mode as you were writing to suggest it, Raven. Safe Mode didn't help.

I did disable Download Helper - no change.

I can't view the flash videos in IE either.

I've never added SP3 because of the problems it caused for some.

I have FF 3.5.3 with add ons:

Flasblock 1.5.11.2 and NoScript 1.9.9.01

I gave NoScript temporary permission to view the page and then could view the videos.

Until I read your message I didn't even know there were videos on Photobucket!

If one has kept up to date with all windows updates from sp2 to date there really is not much need to do sp3, you got the important stuff in those updates, especially if the puter fell into the category of those that had serious issues with sp3. Nothing has been changed with the sp3 update same cautions and pre requisites still exist if you are going to get it, so be sure you do refresh your self on all of those requirements ahead of time. If you choose to do it you should create an image of your system with an imaging program so that if it goes bad you can use the image to revert back. It goes with out saying, it is never a good idea to try to add a service pack to a pc when it is having any type of issues, first clear up problems and the pc prior to that kind of install.

you may want to try a removal and re-install of your firefox it could be it somehow got corrupted which does happen. It will keep all your faves and settings you will not lose those.

I've solved my problem and am back to happily viewing select videos. I'm posting the fix that worked for me in case it might also help another.

As mentioned in previous posts, I had uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash and Shockwave multiple times using Revouninstaller and/or the Adobe removal tool. I even uninstalled using the Adobe Removal Tool, rebooted and ran the Removal tool a second time

Last night after uninstalling both Flash and Shockwave for the umpteenth time, I thought to do a search (Start/Search) on "Adobe", and a second search on "Macromed". Surprise! There were 7 Macromedia files and 23 Adobe files, including application data for each, still on my computer.

This afternoon I methodically deleted each file, rebooted, and went to Photobucket. Instead of getting the endless "Loading" icon, there was a message that Flash Player needed to be installed to view content. The same message appeared at Youtube.

I downloaded the Adobe Flash Player one more time, rebooted for safe measure, and held my breadth as I clicked on a Photobucket video. And IT PLAYED! Youtube is working too.

Those of you who have worked for hours to try to fix a problem surely know the elated feeling one gets when - finally - it's fixed.
