USB Hub--what do I need?

I need a USB Hub and was looking at the one linked below. Some of the reviewers criticized it because is was only USB 1.0 not 2.0. Why would I need 2.0?

I do not have a laptop and just plug in 2 camera card readers, Kodak frame, modem, printer, ipod, mouse, and external hard drive.

As for the linked hub, what keeps it from falling out of the computer with its own weight and cords attached to it?

Sounds like you should be looking at a powered hub and it's really kind of foolish to not get a usb 2.0 spec hub.

I've seen people complain their hubs wouldnt work the iPods unless it was a fully ac.powered hub.

I have an a/c powered hub that I've a hub sitting on top of my tower and its always getting knocked off and unplugs something occasionally. When you're dealing with all those cords its hard not to trip over things... they do make wireless usb hubs, but pricey!

I have several usb 2.0 hubs and none are powered I have never found a need for a powered one. I have a powered one in my desk drawer never opened. I just run a USB cable from my tower to my desk top and plug my hub into that so the hub sits right on my desktop, I have one for each of my computers on the desktop plus I have a usb hub plugged into my KVM switch. Having it on the desktop lets it lay down so it stays plugged fine and is easy to plug anything into it.
If you have a big lots store near you they have some very nice USB 2.0 hubs for $6 I bought several of them all work great.

You definitely want 2.0 it is much faster than 1. I am surprised they still try to sell those old 1.0 hubs, they must have got stuck with them.

I have a very old Pentium 3 with a cheap 4 port USB hub that I plug my scanner, printer, external harddrive, and camera or flash drives into and everything works perfect. USB1 may be a little slow with large external drives loaded with data, but the speed is bearable.

dbags- Just to be clear for you: 1. Right now your DSL goes from the wall to the DSL modem to your computer. 2. You will now modify the system by unplugging the cat5 cable from the back of your computer, and plugging it into the Linksys router; then you have a second cat5 cable that will go from the Linksys to the back of the existing computer. All you're doing is inserting the Linksys router so that it can take the signal from the DSL modem and split it up to more than one computer. All this should be very clearly described in the Linksys instructions, including the step-by-step sequence of installing the new router software and making the physical conections. Once this is completed, you will have the capability to connect up several more computers with cat5 cable and/or several wirelessly as well.

Thumb drives are very inexpensive these days so unless the data is vital you would be wise to toss this one and buy another. If on the other hand the data is vital and you have no back up then you might consider visiting a local repair shop and talk to them. Suggest for confidential reasons you cannot leave the drive with the data, you need to remain there while it is repaired or the data recovered to another drive and see what they say. If they cannot or will not then ask for a recommendation to another local shop. Not wanting to bash you while you are down but if this was your backup copy of the data and you save daily you should seriously consider using 2 thumb drives and alternate so you are never more than one day at risk.

Hi, I'm new to forum and thanks to searching through forums to get an idea of where to start, I have made my 1st purch of a combo sew/embroidery machine- a gently used Ellure few years old (pre USB). Have never done embroidery but want to start. Pick it up this weekend. The prior owner is nice to include a CD of lots of designs she already had. Now my machine didnt come w/Brother PED Basic Box, but she suggests I purchase it at Walmart. Having read thru forums, it sounds like lots of folks love their Ultimate box and Embird to get new designs and use them on their machines. As a newbie, I am a bit confused- if I bought the Ultimate box, do I also need to have the PED Basic box anyway? Or can I just buy Ultimate box and forgoe her suggestion of PED Basic? And whose 'cards' do I buy? Thx in advance for your advice. K
