Another vacuum ? for Bobby

Starting a new thread for the resident expert only because this time I'd like to take cost out of the equation. So, with money no object, what would you consider the top upright and top canister for a family whose flooring is about 50% hard, 50% low pile carpets or oriental rugs? And who doesn't have a shedding German Shepherd Dog yet but hopes to within the lifespan of the vacuum.

p.s. I grew up with canister, DW has had uprights all her life, including now. I know it's a hard transition, I just need to convince her it's worth it.

Hmmmmm.... Pkguy is also a collector and we used to have a guy named Scott who posted but he doesn't much anymore. I don't know as much as a lot of other people do about vacuums, I just love them more!

With that much hard floor, a canister is probably the way to go. If you want a great machine, Miele is the way to go for canister or upright. They are quiet, quality, powerful, last a long time, and filter very well. They now have their own upright called the S7, which has good features and even swivels like a canister or stick vac.

I might suggest Kirby or Royal if you had only plush wall to wall carpet.

Do not get bagless! If you get a canister, make sure the power nozzle cord is integrated with the wands and hose.

Go to a shop and ask to see Miele. Try out the different models and see which one works best for you. Some people push Sebo or Riccar/Simplicity, but I don't have much experience with them.

You could also look at Sears at some of the Kenmore canisters (I worked for Sears when I was 18/19), but then you get OK, not great.

My husband thinks I have a vacuum cleaner fetish. I keep wanting a new one. I think I hate vacuuming so much that I keep looking for a better way to do it. So each time a new one comes out or is advertised, I want it.

I've got both eyes on that Dyson Ball one now. Geesh!

No; not an easy week at all. The media blitz hasn't helped much--we're over 100 miles away and yet, feel invaded also. I feel what good they are able to do by reporting events, is outweighed by the incessant state of turmoil they stir up in the name of reporting the news. I'm almost ready to drop TV, as have many others among my family and friends. Maybe it's the miles I've run, or the hours I've clocked on the Hobbs meter over the years, but I find more often than not, my peace is found in the arts, plants and animals---they are true to themselves, needing little from us; it is we who need them. May we always have the delicious opportunity to experience that which lifts us above and beyond what we have been in the past. That certainly happened last night; I'm just so grateful my daughter bought a ticket to include me and then insisted I go with the rest of the family. When we hugged good-night at my door, we were both in tears again. It was right up there with when we saw the 5-planet line-up some years back....the first-born baby daughter, the mom, and the grandmother, all sitting in a VW camper on Afton Mt. in the middle of the night. We just looked at each other and I said, "Let's do this again the next time around, OK?"

Thanks... you all sure know how to make a gal feel young. My co-worker, Mary bought me a cake. I wasn't excpecting anything, so that was nice of her. She said it was her way for thanking me for the lemon bars, brownies, cheddar biscuits, and cookies... and for the carrot cake that I made for her birthday. It was very chocolate and very rich. Called the chocolate avalanche cake from Publix. Pics: I was going to try to get an open shot, but I RUINED it when I cut the silly thing. I ruin any cake I ever try to cut. And that silly plastic thing they give with the cake to slice serves more to smash and squash than slice and serve... but it was very good and moist no matter what it looked like! I also bought some Toblerone for myself after renewing the lease today... a friend gave me that for a birthday several years ago, so it's been a tradition ever since. Thanks again... I REALLY enjoy this forum and the people here. One of the hightlights of my day is to log in here and see what's going on with everyone!

I'm wanting a canister...we have hardwood floors (some original to this 1893 house), and rugs on them, and kitty hair is an issue. I also need to be able to get under and around things. So Dyson is noisy? I have been alarmed by the android quality of the machine...but if it can be taught to vacuum while we are out to dinner, I could accept it...and the kitties could hide in their "oh, no, it's a thunderstorm!" places...?? Seriously, though...anything you all can pass on will be appreciated.

I'm new too and sorta chatty like a "few" others here.If you read back into the posts on this page of about a week ago you can hear all about how the KT started and who has been here a very long time. It is amazing it has been so succesful. I never had that long marriage that you had even though I married someone I knew a long time and it is hard for me to express how beautiful I think it must have been for you. I'd like to hear more about it of course. I wish the holidays weren't on top of you right now though. There are many changes that go on here all the time. When you can't take it, give a shout out to others who have been through your loss. This is a loving place for the wounded, the great cooks, gardeners, philosophers, photographers, funny people, short people, parents, grandparents and those who just need to share or listen. Well, Shaun, you just live too far away to have a free vacuumer :o) Maybe try the Roomba if you hate it that much!

I don't like the Dyson Ball.... it's heavy and because it pivots and is heavy, it's hard to hold straight. I tried it out in Sears and was not impressed.

I'm with Bobby, the Miele is my first recommendation for a canister vacuum. I've not tried the S7 yet, but it looks nice too. I think a canister will make your life a lot easier with that much hardwood flooring. Guess it's time for a trip to the vacuum store! Have fun!
