Kitchenaid, Electrolux, Ventahood comments/suggestions needed.

Hiya,

My house is quickly coming up where the appliances need to be picked...

I have spent the last few months reading a lot of comments and suggestions and absorbing information about various appliances.

I had initially picked kitchenaid for fridge, wall oven & dishwasher...

Now i am seriously considering (more than likely switching) my wall ovens to Elux (EW30EW65GS) cost difference is few hundred more and i can totally justify for even heat and less self clean issues.

The problem i run into is that my fridge is next to the oven and my KA fridge's handles (KBFS25EWMS) wont work with the ELUX. I can switch to a elux fridge but its about $900 dollars more for similar looking fridge (25 vs 28 cuft). What do you suggest in terms of matching handles and or getting the elux fridge... the model i will get (EI27BS16JS) will have no water dispenser but ice in the freezer. I like the elux esthetically but i am not sure if its worth the extra $900 just for good looks and more space?

Then i come to ventahood. Initially i was getting custom cabinetry for the hood liner but now i am thinking of just putting a stainless steele model and maybe get a 27" deep one (will be using a six burner culinarian without grill/griddle rangetop).

Also there is the magic lung vs the pro model with the traditional steele filters that can be washed.

I have also second guessed my KA diswasher (KUDE60HXSS) because of side venting and laundry machine from whirlpool to samsung or just bite the bullet and get the miele (Miele for me would be about twice as much as the samsung or whirlpool models).

dilemmas, any suggestions and comments are appreciated.

I have E'lux wall ovens and totally love them, but if you've researched ovens at all on this forum you already know that. :-)

My fridge is also right next to my ovens. In general, I was buying for performance and value, not looks. But because the ovens/fridge were in such close proximity, I bit the bullet, crossed my fingers and bought the E'lux fridge, despite some problems that had been discussed here. It's a nice looking fridge and really big, which I liked. I've had it for almost a year and have had no problems or issues with it at all. It is the IQ touch model with water and ice in the door. It works well, and it looks nice next to the ovens. We spent so much on the remodel as a whole, and worked so hard to ensure that it all looked good, I decided to spend the extra money and go with the E'lux because it was more visually pleasing to me. I should say that I love the inside configuration as well. Food stays fresher for much longer than my old fridge, but that was 16 years old, so it may well be due to newer technology rather than the fridge itself.

I have a Miele Inspira dishwasher (on the other side of the kitchen) and have not regretted that purchase, either. It's an awesome performer, very quiet, and it was my first choice. However--I should say that I'd planned to get a KA model to save some $ till I ran across this one in the clearance room for about half price, which made the choice much easier. I know that many folks love their KA dishwashers, so you really couldn't go wrong either way.

cj37: thanks for the vote of confidence re: elux double ovens. I like the elux fridges as the build quality is miles ahead of KA but the premium is a lot 900 bucks from a ka model to the elux model... the cu.ft is increased by 2ish units but still a big difference in cost.

I think if i really want them to match (handles) i may have to swallow the cost.

I have no water only icemaker (which is in the freezer) so i don't think i will have many problems with the elux.

I think i will have to check up on miele's factory outlet and maybe grab the dishwasher washer and dryer from there.

The only issue with KA i have right now is the vent on the side of the cabinet which i think is a bad design as almost everyone has cabinetry on the side and this would damage the cabinetry.

At this point i have miele and or bosch as an option for dishwasher unless KA makes a non vent model this year?

I'd ditch the walk in pantry in place of a step in pantry. (Or desperately try to locate it somewhere else, like combining the laundry/mudroom/pantry areas to a larger multipurpose area.) You'd have just about as much space with a step in because you wouldn't be dealing with space wasting corners. And it would open up the kitchen feel and allow the island to be longer and everything else to shift. And, although windows are great, enough space in the right spots in a kitchen is more important. I'd ditch the big window. You need the counter and cabinet space more than the window where it's located. Think outside the box on getting more light into the space. Maybe substitute it with a windowed backsplash or a clerestory window above the cabinets since this is a modern build. I'd also split the freezer from the fridge. It's old fashioned thinking to think they need to be located together when you are using separate units. A freezer is long term storage, like a pantry, while a fridge is accessed almost hourly in the summer for cold drinks. Moving it gives you the landing space for the fridge and the range. Yes, a range. You'd be better off spacewise with a range if you insist on keeping that large pantry in the kitchen. If you need that second oven for entertaining, place it under the counter at the end of the island. You now have room for that since the titanic pantry gets reduced to a more proportionate size. And make the island a single height workspace. It's FAR more useful when it's not split into two different heights. You could even put all of your baking stuff on the opposite side with the oven there and have that be your dedicated baking zone.

we focused on capture area more thAN any other issue (we have a 1200 VAH). ours is 58x27 over a 55" range. because we have an unusual size stove, we had to actually rebuild our VAH (within their standards) to get the size we wanted, but when it was done, it looked just like when we bought it...only it appeared to have eaten lots of spinich :OP

@SparklingWater: Thank you so much for taking the time to post your thoughts. I have been checking in every hour to see if someone would respond. Yes, I definitely want to bring the cabinet above the hood forward and make it flush with the hood below. I thought it looked odd as well and asked the cabinet designer to modify it on the next plans. He also is planning on adding glass doors in the doors above. We are going to use 6" upper hood columns (instead of 3-4" columns as pictured) in that area as well. I also am replacing the faux "legs" under the rangetop with 6" "legs" that will have a pull out spice rack on each side. I think that will match well with the new 6" columns above. He has mentioned using furniture finishes to all the ends of all the cabinets although I did not ask him specifically about that area but will make sure to do so. We are using a counter depth fridge and that area you see will be covered. I hadn't thought about the depth of the cabinets in that area but will definitely ask (I hope the budget will allow it). My worry is that with the end bumped out, the middle pushed in, and then the one adjacent to the fridge bumped out it might look a little strange. Am I understanding you correctly? Appreciate your great feedback. I hope to post some updated pics in the middle of the week. If anyone else has any thoughts please let me know! Thanks and Happy Holidays! kaseki I know SZ answers their phones and normally their customer service is beyond reproach. this time I was underwhelmed by the response. It's not as if I've had this ventilations system for years. I said the spring is broken, can you please send me a new spring.. She said "send me a picture" then told me it's not broken just bent. The baffles she told me are very easy to take out. I had a couple of men friends help me as I figured I must be missing something. They did not have to stand on the ladder but ultimately had just as difficult a time to get them out and in. So it's not a "girl" thing :)) Normally they want you to fill out a survey on how they did. She did not, as most likely she realized her service was not that great. Maybe she was having a bad day. Happens! Drilling holes is doable. I have all of the equipment and a myriad of drill bits but have not had much training in the way of drilling into stainless steel. Do you drill a pilot hole? If I go to the "leaf Spring" store and buy a few, I could practice drilling holes before tackling stainless. :)) For now I guess I'll live with it. So many other things that are more urgent. I guess your Fridge will not be panneled?
I have the Elux Icon oven and Speed oven, but a Jenn-Air
paneled 48" built in fridge, (right next to the Speed Oven).
Oven and speed oven handles match, and even the Miele Optima DW's handle is same style. Course the fridge handles weren't
(Even Close)soooo I called Elux and bought the handles for their fridge and installed it on the JA Fridges's Panels.
BINGO, Perfect Match!

dodge59: Interesting solution. My fridge won't be panelled so i guess getting the handles wont work for me.. but its a way to go if i want to i have to see the costing in doing this is if it makes sense or just jump to a ELUX fridge. thanks for the idea!!

Chris, you really are spamming here, when you just cut/paste your same info into many threads, and contribute absolutely nothing. Great for your offer of help, but from most accounts (at least from the consumer end) Electrolux needs to address their customer service and product issues when contacted by owners with problems, more than they need what you are offering.

Thanks for the tips guys... i will get the elux double oven and a matching french fridge to go with it (no ice nor water on the door).

Now onto my washer/dryer dilema... will ask in laundry section.

The KA dishwasher anyone with a lot of steam/water come out of vents... any experience with it?

Ours is a top vent but I have never seen anything come out of it. We applied the waterproof strip that KA includes on the cabinet edge but seriously it does not emit any moisture at all as far as I have been able to determine. I have read other posts that say they cannot see any steam as well. We have the KUDE70 stainless model.

@tarheel: thanks for the input. There is a thread about someone with a kude60 that releases a lot of humidity after being used they used an envelope that got wet in the course of a few hours after use.

See if yours releases some "liquid" or not.

I will be getting a kude60hx.

I have another question re: elux.

I have seen/read here and on manuf website that elux appliances are being filtered down to Frigidaire.

i.e Frigidaire has the same fridge, wall oven, washer and dryer as elux has.

Can anyone comment on quality/reliability... i mean if i am just paying for elux name why not take Frigidaire???? Lots of saving to be had in that sense.

I have not yet seen them in person so not sure if it is exactly same or not.
