MSN live messenger?

recent update has ended up with a MSN live messenger sign in on left of my screen, I don't want, nor do I use hotmail, how do I get rid of this once and for all?

I guess i didn't realize when I updated, this would come along, and also, says it runs in the background all the time, so I get updates? etc., don't need it please help get rid of it!

oops, XP, and FF, and Chrome OS are my go tos, along with IE

Bob, tried to do the deed, no luck, spoze I will have to sign in? I don't even want to do that, but if necessary will do so, if it will just make the darn thing go away.
Thought I had it gone, but still coming back, so maybe that is my only solution?
Also, on that page that you referenced, there was a mention for free scan of Windows errors, would you recommend that as well? Shaddy

Calpat: My experience has been terrible when I tried to remove Messenger in the past. With all the alarms that went off you would think I was stealing gold from Fort Knox not getting rid of an intrusive program that I didn't want. I have had great success with End It All to turn off unwanted running background processes while I play games...well Morrowind, a game. After IE7, about all it turned off was the Toshiba pinger. All the processes are now "protected". The security alert background processes. Everything is running now. Its such a pain. I used to be able to "end process" for messenger and a lot of Window stuff...no more. I uninstalled "End it All" because it no longer ended or "killed" anything but the pinger. I think I'm going to have the same problem as you. I don't think you made a mistake. That might be what happens now. I'm scared of it. I tried to remove a fax background process,a long time ago, through MSCONFIG and my computer sounded like a fire drill at an elementary school. mikie ... I'm going to try to look into this anyway. I just hate having to carry messenger because I don't use it, and I won't use it. I don't think it can be removed anymore than I can "end process" for it during a game session like I used to. But you know that I am usually wrong...so I will give a look see... marf

Thanks, bpgreen, for answering. Yes we will both be using Skype, but I haven't installed it yet, so I guess I would have known that if I had, huh. He mentioned he used MSN Messenger, so I thought I needed that. Thanks again

MSN mess. is now called windows live, why would the contacs location be a prob.? and you can probably change that...

If you managed to uncheck those two things and that didn't do the trick I don't think logging in will help. If you couldn't uncheck them I would log in and try it.
I wouldn't do that scan unless someone who has used it recommends it here. I've never tried it and don't plan to.
Good luck with the messenger thing. If I had XP I would try to duplicate your problem but don't have access to it now.

I got a little tense about this darn program, and just went in and deleted the Windows Messenger thing from the machine, and seems to have worked just fine, as it was something I didn't use anyway, don't have any use for it, and don't miss it!
glad it is gone, and hope it is the last of it!!!!!!!!!
