In case you don't know how to create and use a password reset disk for your pc here is the link to how to do that. It is a really good idea to do, and save to a safe location, be sure to label it as password reset disk and the computer name it belongs to. (this can be done on a floppy as well)

I've assisted a number of computer users who had forgotten their passwords. A five minute Google search will yield an ISO for a freeware Linux boot disk that will reset any Windows PC user password.

It's a good idea to create a reset disk, but it's not the end of the world if one does not exist.

yes I have ubuntu and mepis on one of my pcs and definitely think having a live cd available for those kinds of situations is helpful but unfortunately the average person will not want to even think linux, it scares them so unless they happen to have someone around who can do it for them they will likely not attempt it.

It would be good if you made a password reset key. This key will keep working even if your password is changed or forgoten. If you Format your hard drive It will not work anymore until you Reset this key. Go to User Account Open - click Administrator Acc. - At the left top click - Prevent a Forgoten Password. (If you have a Floppy Drive you can get in here) If you don't have a Floppy you will need a USB Device. Mine is called a USB SanDisk (256MB) It cost about $18.00 If you can't get in their go in at sign-in and set your Reset Key. You will need the password to get in and a Password has to be made before a Password Resed Key can be made.

Before doing anything be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose including your contact list for emails. Make a note of installed programs and find the needed CD/DVD for each. I think you will have to do a fresh install of Vista, not positive but I doubt they included the ability to move backwards. The advantage would be that everything is squeaky clean. Use the Vista CD/s you have but when it requires the 25 digit authentication code use the one fixed to the computer now. If you go with a fresh install you should allow the computer to format the drive, select NTFS to make the best use of the hard drive. You should go to the Dell site, download and save all the drivers you will need before proceeding. Save these on a thumb drive or CD if the DVD player problem has been addressed. DVD player is very easy to install. simply shut down and either switch off at the rear if provided or remove the power cord. Remove both sides, remove 2 screws each side of DVD player, remove wide (2 inch) ribbon cable, flat power cable and skiiny sound wire. Slide defective DVD player out then reverse the procedure to install the new DVD player. done.

Obviously you have access to an operable system or you wouldn't be posting here, Dave. I posted the info that I did as a reminder to anyone who reads these threads that an ounce of a preventive measure can help eliminate the possibility of experiencing this problem. Then...I remembered what got me out of this mess many moons ago before I took my own advice..creating a reset disk. I posted the site rather than copying the info. If you take the time to read it...it would tell you how to get from the opening screen into your system so you can create a reset disk. I read your original post quite closely. If you can get to the opening screen...you can follow the 4SYSOPS directions to get into your system. Beyond that, be careful accessing your system from another system regarding the use of a password reset.. In some instances...although the act may be successful...you could lose some or all of your backup data in doing so. Go softly.... Anne Thank you Owbist for the confirmation regarding Win 8.

This requires a floppy. Who has one anymore? Mine don't.

A Sandisk that connects by USB works just fine for your
reset disk. Mine cost about $20.00 and I've had it for a
long time. If you should Format your hard drive than you
will need to update your Reset Disk. If you change your
password your Reset Disk will still work without resetting it.
If you normally don't use a password you will need to create
a password before your computer will allow you to make a
Reset Disk. The password can be removed and anyone does put
a password in your computer without your knowledge your
Reset Disk will allow you in to set a new password.
This keeps other from blocking you from using your own PC.
I helped someone who had this very same problem.

jane if you look at the directions it says use a disk I said you can also do it with a floppy. Here is in fact the direct quote from the vista directions.
"3. Put the writable removable media in the applicable media drive, and then click Next on the Forgotten Password Wizard page."

writable removable media!! which ever type you have or choose to use.

I just bookmarked those two sites and I printed the Vista one out for my daughter. She has a laptop that has Vista on it.
