Help with password

I have DSL and so my internet is always on. Doesn't that mean that anyone who wants can use my computer and get into anything they want? I do not have to use my password to get in-it is always on. So how can I make it so they can't. Also-many people know my password because at one time the family all used the computer-now I would like to change that so I am the only one who knows the password. How do I change that ? I tried to change the password but it didn't work. I hope you acan understand what I am trying to say?!!!

If you have a good firewall, you don't have to worry about outsiders accessing your computer. Not sure about the password since I don't use or have one.

Assuming windows xp

If you go into 'control panel,, open 'Users Accounts'
Does your user name say both 'administrator' and 'Password Protected'?

If so you should be able to click your user name and one of the options is change the password.

But that wont neccessarly stop others from using your computer to access the internet.
You may be wise to turn on the guest account if its not already enabled. So others tempUsers are less likely to make themselfs a new user named account, just to use the computer.

It's in Tools, Accounts. You just highlight the account and click Properties...look on the servers tab. My computer crashed and I just happened to be using my older computer with Office 2000. Pam

When that happens it is saved into your browser and yes it can be accessed by anyone with access to the pc. I have a very nice notebook with plastic cover that is strictly for login details including passwords. You should have some thing other than a scrap of papers. Over time as you sign up for various sites you have a pile of papers. I don't put passwords in any program and don't use a password keeper. I have a copy saved on a flash drive, the notebook that is in a locked location. If someone makes it into my house, kills me and my husband, manages to steal my computers and also finds and steals the notebook too they can have it! I tape the router and wifi information on the bottom of the router.

Without stepping on anyone's toes, could I join the needing help with this issue? If this should be a separate thread, please tell me... Approx 2 months, same problem with IE9. I know there had been an update a few days before I noticed the problem but thought I'd used the browser for same tasks for a few days after that. For the last few (8 or more) weeks, I have to type my username into Ebay sign in when I didn't before, and I can't leave or view feedback there with IE9 any longer. Shop, buy, pay - all fine. My bank, all else has been OK except GW....I can't log into GW either and Tamara hasn't been able to assist. I'm having to change browsers and use Firefox for the forums, and to leave feedback on Ebay...just those two places. Workable but annoying. Windows 7. I didn't intentionally change any settings or do anything where I could have unintentionally changed them that I'm aware of, and I do use CCleaner regularly, no big cookie stashes. I've moved Ebay cookies and GW cookies to the delete side of the CCleaner options, moved them back to the 'saves'...no difference.

Obviously you have access to an operable system or you wouldn't be posting here, Dave. I posted the info that I did as a reminder to anyone who reads these threads that an ounce of a preventive measure can help eliminate the possibility of experiencing this problem. Then...I remembered what got me out of this mess many moons ago before I took my own advice..creating a reset disk. I posted the site rather than copying the info. If you take the time to read it...it would tell you how to get from the opening screen into your system so you can create a reset disk. I read your original post quite closely. If you can get to the opening screen...you can follow the 4SYSOPS directions to get into your system. Beyond that, be careful accessing your system from another system regarding the use of a password reset.. In some instances...although the act may be successful...you could lose some or all of your backup data in doing so. Go softly.... Anne Thank you Owbist for the confirmation regarding Win 8.

It would be good if you made a password reset key. This key
will keep working even if your password is changed or forgoten. If you Format your hard drive It will not work anymore until you Reset this key.
Go to User Account Open - click Administrator Acc. -
At the left top click - Prevent a Forgoten Password.
(If you have a Floppy Drive you can get in here)
If you don't have a Floppy you will need a USB Device.
Mine is called a USB SanDisk (256MB) It cost about $18.00

If you can't get in their go in at sign-in and set your
Reset Key. You will need the password to get in and a
Password has to be made before a Password Resed Key can be
made.
