Can't connect to GardenWeb using Safari?!

Okay, this is making me totally nuts!! I have a new iMAC and I've been browsing the Garden Web forums with no problems using the Safari browser. Then about a week or so ago I would be able to go in ONCE and then I will continually get an "error" message saying that the "string" was too long (or something like that) and then I am unable to enter any and ALL GardenWeb pages!!

I went back into the postings and found where someone had the very same problem and he said he would have to go in and manually remove a cookie (shown in the error message). I tried that and I was able to gain access, but then again it would do the same thing with another error message!! I have NO trouble using my Firefox browser on my iMAC...but I really like Safari and the way it's laid out etc. Plus the problem should be able to be fixed - dang-it!!

Question: Does anyone else have the same problem using a MAC with Safari? And whose fault is this? Safari or the GardenWeb? I email GardenWeb but no answer so far.

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm not a computer wizard and I just bought the iMAC and love it! Please help...

I'm sure the problem is Safari, best bet install another browser see link. See if the new browser connects to Garden Web. If so then you could consider uninstalling & Reinstalling Safari.

Problems persist head to a MAC forum for other ideas..

FWIW...I have iMac with Safari version 4 (beta) running under Leopard. No issues. Also no issues under previous Safari version and Tiger OS. Three years total. These systems work fine.

I, too, am suspecting compromised install or something else small or overlooked. If your iMac is new, I suspect you have free phone help available. In my experience, the Apple folks have always been terrific. I would start there. Suspect they'll have you out of trouble quickly.

C'mon back and tell us what you find.

Proudgm_03, I had to cringe at the thought of tyin' 'em in knots or tyin' 'em in bows. Yikes! Edna, after all this time that particular add has appeared in the right side column of my screen. I have Firefox too. I can not open a screen on this forum anymore without getting the line notice at the top telling me that Firefox has prevented this site from opening a pop up window. I'd have been long gone from here with out the Firefox blocker feature!! Today I am 'discovering permanent birth control like no other'. I discovered that long ago when I had my hyster. UPDATE: I was okay for a day or two - but it's back to "400 Bad Request". mary4b's message prompted me to contact them again. I was willing to change browsers in order to access the site - not ideal, tho. It's a pain to claer cache (w safari) everytime I want access. I posted on the Robin Round forum that I would REALLY love the option to edit or delete a posting or response that I have left, that includes a pic I may have posted too, I might not want it to be around always. We should have this option of edit or deleting an again this is my personal opinion BUT I think adding this option will make Gardenweb better, and though I do have an account on FB (we can edit and delete postings there too) I prefer not to be linked to it through GW, I too come here to get away from all the junk on FB. Again my personal opinion but I do not see the point of Pinterest, what is it good for? You can do the same things there you can on other sites it is a jumble of junk to me. In other words, (I am not a 'senior' either) BUT I want GW left to it's cozy little self. Gardenweb is what it is because of the 'Community'/family bonds have been formed here that more likely then not last a lifetime. You CAN NOT get that on FB. GW is more then just a place to hang out and drink coffee, it is as said, A community of friends. FB or pinterest is NOT needed here. I do spend MORE TIME HERE then on FB, I post more here too.... ....so what does that tell you? Thanks for asking for input, I truly do hope it is taken to heart. :) Aqua

1) Better search. The current search is not only limited, but buggy (it doesn't return all matching results, even if the posts are recent, for example). 2) Ability to search multiple areas at the same time without searching the entire forum (for example, just Home Decorating and Paint, or Bathrooms and Plumbing, or Building a Home and Remodeling, or Appliances and Laundry Room, etc.) 3) If you're on That Home Site, search should default to THS, not to GardenWeb (this should be a trivial fix). 4) Additional subject areas for topics that always get a lot of questions (Fences and Walls, Roofing, Contractor Disputes, etc.). 5) GW should host its own photos so they don't disappear later -- it's so frustrating to read a thread and not be able to see the photos that go with it, or to have to create yet another account to log into a separate photo site. 6) A simpler way to add a link to a post 7) The ability to add multiple links to a post 8) The ability to designate certain posters as favorites so you could easily see their recent posts (your favorites list should be private, though). 9) A dashboard where you could see your recent activity (threads that you've started, threads in which you've recently posted messages, your watched threads, postings by your favorites, your clippings, etc.) so that you don't have to use search or go to your profile to find this information each time you log in The ability to set up rules for alerts. For example, you could set a rule that sends you an alert whenever mythreedogs (one of the Home Decorating rock stars) posts a photo. I have the same problem, but I'm on windows. It worked fine until about a week ago. Both IE and Firefox work, but I hate both of them (except the ad block on firefox) and want safari back.

Have either of you tried Google Chrome? Garden Web works just fine with that browser.

You haven't told us anything that you tried to resolve the problem, like reinstalling Safari, rebotting, disable firewall briefly ect...

I have Safari on Vista and connect ok here.

For those who are having problems with Safari and GW, do you know what version you are running?

Asolo, who has an iMac and Safari version 4 (beta) is having no problems.

Same problem here. Bought my first MacBook Pro a couple weeks ago. At first it was smooth sailing on Safari (for Leopard), now I get the same "Bad Request" as mentioned above. I've switched to Firefox for GW visits. I'm taking the "one to one" classes at the local Apple store, so I'll mention it next visit.

Can't connect to GardenWeb using Safari?!
