I think Spring is really here

My garden is cleaned up, the daffy's have buds showing, the lilac is starting to leaf out just a little bit, the birds are checking out thier new bird house and best of all, I planted a pot of pansies by the front door.

Finally!

Yes, here too! It's wonderful. The darn weather is still cool though. It's been an usually cold winter/early spring.

Crocus are blooming & early daffs have buds. We were at a house yesterday with 8,000 daffs planted on a hillside...in 2 weeks it's going to be spectacular!

The pansies I planted last fall are blooming & I've got a few primroses also. The scilla's starting to show blue & many perennials are out of the ground.

Lots of robins & cardinals. The ospreys have babies & the swans are protecting nesting sites. I love spring!

We have forsythia and bulbs blooming here in the central part of North Carolina. I've also seen some beautiful weeping cherry trees blooming. It has been cool but sunny the last few days but we had a touch of frost last night. The peas, spinach and lettuce I planted at "Mom's" garden are coming up so I requested that they try to water them this week.

This morning I noticed that I have a robin's nest (at least I think it is a robin) up in the corner of my front porch. I was planning to clean up the porch some today, but may have to wait on that if the momma gets upset when I am out there.

48, 52!!!! I wish! It got down to 10 last night and achieving a balmy 35 today! 52 WOULD seem like heaven to me! I wish we could get ONE day in the 50s! We will have the 4th coldest march on record here in my neck of the woods! Its not that its been terrible cold, but its been only hovering around mid 30s at most now, usually we are near 40 to mid 40s for seasonal temps... I still have FEET of snowpack left.!!!! ARRRGHHHHH Silverkelt, from the worst winter EVER! no really EVER! 148 inches of recorded snow in HIRAM, ME. I know some of you get more, BUT THATS alot here, I was getting used to the 80 inch snow year let me tell you!

He won't freeze. It is somewhat common to have snow storms and/or freezing temperatures after the frogs start calling. They know what to do and where to go when the conditions are dangerously cold or hot or dry.

I'm baaaackkk! My contractor responded to my question to him about why the heat pump quote was so much higher than the non-heat pump quote...He didn't really answer it, but he has revised it to include the Infinity furnace (variable I think) along with the Infinity heat pump-a/c. My total payment after rebates is about 13,500. This includes the system below, 50 gal powervent hwh, 950 sq feet of r-19 blown in fiberglass and air sealing gaps in attic and as needed elsewhere. I have no idea what a reasonable price for this Infinity system is. I know the hwh and insulation are a little high, but not crazy. Any ideas what this hvac alone should cost? He doesn't list Infinity control but maybe that's an oversight as one of the units (a/c?) seems to require it. I would ask for it to be included in the price. This is the same price as he originally gave me for the 59TP5 furnce..the only diff is the furnace, is it much more in cost? � Remove and dispose of existing furnace, coil, line set, and plenum located in basement � Clean duct system. � Install new 2-stage, 100,000 BTU Carrier 96% gas furnace. (Model 59TN6A0100E2120) � Install new 4-ton Carrier Infinity 16, 2-stage heat pump condenser on legs. (Puron) (Model (25HNB636B) � Install new matching Carrier evaporator coil. (CNPVP4821A) � Install new properly sized disconnect/ whip. � Install new media cabinet and filter. (MERV 10) � Install new Carrier Edge programmable thermostat control. � Install new plenum and duct adaptation to existing supply and return duct. � Install new copper line set to connect units between indoor and outdoor equipment. � Install new condensation removal system terminating to exterior. � Connect to existing intake and exhaust piping to exterior. � Includes Carrier Limited Lifetime warranty on heat exchanger. � Includes Carrier Limited 10-year warranty on heat exchanger. � Includes Carrier Limited 10-year parts warranty and 10-year labor warranty. � Includes 1-year maintenance agreement. (Fall 2012 and Spring 2013) � All UCC required permit fees included Of course I do know that if my unit dies I could replace it with something for around 8-9k...but don't know how much Infinity would cost or if it's worth it. Also, He wrote his in the email, "This project will save over 27% of Total usage but I used 25% reduction over the course of one year. Using your utility bills from 5/11 to 4/12 you spent approx. $2,397.00 on electric and $1,040.00 on gas. (Keep in mind this was one of the warmest winters on record. From 4/11 to 5/10 you spent $1,375.00 on gas). Taking theses costs and deducting the 25%, we have an average monthly savings of $21.66 on gas and $49.93 on electric which equals to a total average monthly savings of $71.59. Remove that cost from the $83.33 loan payment you have $16.74 per month payment which equates to paying back $2,008.80 on a $10,000.00 loan." BUT, isn't part of my electric my fridge, computers and tv??? Also, I doubt the people who paid 8k got a 10yr pt/labor warranty...which does have some value.

What a lovely thread! I love and adore the birds in our yard. I never noticed the mockingbird " mocking " or singing at night but I'll listen for it. We have one in particular that is always been by my garage and twice this week gotten trapped in my SUV when I leave the trunk open to unload. I have many cardinals , a few blue jays and one downy woodpecker. Lots of mourning doves and to my delight a handful of eastern bluebirds as well . And in late summer sometimes I'm blessed to see a pair of quail . I have a cavalier spaniel who is very quick so the quail tend to move along :( lots of frogs / toads here too This middle bird: no idea what kind but one of them flew into our garage and got let into the house accidentally for 3 days! He stayed in our Christmas tree! It was hilarious. He was very hard to get out of the house Love the hawks and the herons when we catch them too . Birdwatching is a favorite hobby of mine !

The Iris reticulata and the crocuses bloomed this week, and the tiny miniature daffodils started before that. The Chinese witch hazel is still in good shape and very fragrant; thanks to the chilly weather its flowers have lasted longer than usual. Snowdrops are fading. Hellebores are starting to unfurl their buds.
Wednesday was warm and I was out doing some garden clean-up. Nothing much, but oh, I ached for two days!

My daffys are on their way out , peach colored japonica is blooming, pussy willows have done their do, blueberry bushes are budding and my French lilac is starting to bud. In the wildflowers, the bloodroot is just past it's prime and lots of trillium up. Virginia bluebells just starting to show color. I too, love spring!!!

My yard is still about 50% covered in snow, the lake is still froze over and there's huge snow piles at least 5ft high from the snowplowing.

Should be a good morel season. That's about the only positive remark I can think of to make right now. :)

We lost all our snow on Friday when it poured rain. But the ground is still frozen and nothing is budding or blooming yet. Can't even think of cleaning up the gardens here for at least another month.

Although I have not tried this (yet), I have heard the maple trees are giving up loads of sap for syrup. I think I might try tapping a few of our maples next year. Lord knows we have enough of them!

They're still tapping maples here, it's below freezing at night and right now it's 43F. I saw three robins in the fresh snow on my lawn on Saturday. Yup, it snowed Friday night. Now that I think about it, it snowed Thursday night too. We still have snowbanks that haven't melted and the ground is still frozen enough that I couldn't set fence posts yesterday yet.

Linda, tap those maples! Boiling syrup is pretty easy, but it takes 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup, and each tree will yield "about" enough sap to make a quart.

Boil it outside, though, that syrup laden steam will coat everything in your kitchen with a sticky maple coating. Nope, it wasn't me, it was Aunt LulaBelle, LOL.

When I "retire", I just might tap the maples again....
