I think Spring is really here

My garden is cleaned up, the daffy's have buds showing, the lilac is starting to leaf out just a little bit, the birds are checking out thier new bird house and best of all, I planted a pot of pansies by the front door.

Finally!

Yes, here too! It's wonderful. The darn weather is still cool though. It's been an usually cold winter/early spring.

Crocus are blooming & early daffs have buds. We were at a house yesterday with 8,000 daffs planted on a hillside...in 2 weeks it's going to be spectacular!

The pansies I planted last fall are blooming & I've got a few primroses also. The scilla's starting to show blue & many perennials are out of the ground.

Lots of robins & cardinals. The ospreys have babies & the swans are protecting nesting sites. I love spring!

We have forsythia and bulbs blooming here in the central part of North Carolina. I've also seen some beautiful weeping cherry trees blooming. It has been cool but sunny the last few days but we had a touch of frost last night. The peas, spinach and lettuce I planted at "Mom's" garden are coming up so I requested that they try to water them this week.

This morning I noticed that I have a robin's nest (at least I think it is a robin) up in the corner of my front porch. I was planning to clean up the porch some today, but may have to wait on that if the momma gets upset when I am out there.

I'm guessing the elephant garlic are the ones on the left? That is impressive for this early and you are a zone lower than me. The last 2 weeks of March were miserable here too. I'm in zone 7 and mine looks a little bigger than the ones on the right. But no where close to the ones on the left! It was 70's here the last 3 days and predicted to be the same for the next few day's. I can see a lot of growth in the last few days. Sweethang was impressed yesterday. I trimmed a few outside leaves to put on our baked potatoes and Alabama white BBQ sauce grilled chicken. She said she needed a cloth napkin because it was like eating in a fancy restaurant! LOL Mine are Spanish Rojo (red) and German Porcelain.

Contrary to the above reports, spring is definetly not here. On the high plains old boss winter is reluctant to give up his reign. We get teasers like today where the temps are in the high 50's and the sky is cloudless but the incessant north wind reminds you of who rules the roost. We are supposed to have up to 6" of snow tomorrow and much colder temps. Why do we live here? It sure isn't because of the climate. Winters are harsh and long, spring is usually short and often brutal, summers often blisteringly hot with that again incessant wind. Then comes fall, glorious fall, warm days cool nights and usually settled weather, last October it snowed 33" but that is unusual. The river is lined with sandhill cranes and the sky in the early morning and evening is black with cranes. There are other hundreds of shore birds that use the Platte as a staging area, more kinds of ducks than I have a name for and the snow geese are covering the lake in town. When I was liuving with my grandparents, granddad had what he called a swale in the middle of a pasture and in spring it was almost always filled with snow melt making a pond perhaps 200 ft long and 50 geet wide. Not over a foot deep and we really weren't on any major flyway but invariably there would be some water fowl that would rest on it, probably because our ducks would spend most of their time there. Grandad would always let us know what birds he had seen but his greatest pleasure came when some snow geese stopoped there. It didn' happen every year but I can remember a number of times it did. He waould always say their name is ----- hypoborea, don't remember what he called the genus but we were entranced with the hypoborea part. He would always explain the that meant goose from beyond the north. Wish the taxonimists hadn't changed the name, goose from beyond the north sure sounds more exciting and exotic than the present days dry latin name. Just wrote a book again when all I was goling to mention was the weather.

Hiya Greg, Not sure what you were thinking but hum ... I'm a pumice girl, simply 'cause I've had access to it for a long time, but for those who don't, that's why I advocate Perlite. Drainage really matters for Haws. grown indoors, I've had mine lose roots once or twice (not this one). Above shot is the cleaned up version of this find I made at a BBS, something like $3.99 like OP's find. The actual find as I found it. Some real gems out there, if one looks closely, gets lucky & learns the delivery days of the BBS. Then one can get there fast enough before they incur bad care. Sorry Nancy (OP), I don't know much about crests of that. I've seen crested Ech. & Aeoniums, not so much of Sedum or Grapto. 'Rare' I think is often overused online, more like a marketing ploy, to try & sucker folks in that the plant is something distinct & unique.

The Iris reticulata and the crocuses bloomed this week, and the tiny miniature daffodils started before that. The Chinese witch hazel is still in good shape and very fragrant; thanks to the chilly weather its flowers have lasted longer than usual. Snowdrops are fading. Hellebores are starting to unfurl their buds.
Wednesday was warm and I was out doing some garden clean-up. Nothing much, but oh, I ached for two days!

My daffys are on their way out , peach colored japonica is blooming, pussy willows have done their do, blueberry bushes are budding and my French lilac is starting to bud. In the wildflowers, the bloodroot is just past it's prime and lots of trillium up. Virginia bluebells just starting to show color. I too, love spring!!!

My yard is still about 50% covered in snow, the lake is still froze over and there's huge snow piles at least 5ft high from the snowplowing.

Should be a good morel season. That's about the only positive remark I can think of to make right now. :)

We lost all our snow on Friday when it poured rain. But the ground is still frozen and nothing is budding or blooming yet. Can't even think of cleaning up the gardens here for at least another month.

Although I have not tried this (yet), I have heard the maple trees are giving up loads of sap for syrup. I think I might try tapping a few of our maples next year. Lord knows we have enough of them!

They're still tapping maples here, it's below freezing at night and right now it's 43F. I saw three robins in the fresh snow on my lawn on Saturday. Yup, it snowed Friday night. Now that I think about it, it snowed Thursday night too. We still have snowbanks that haven't melted and the ground is still frozen enough that I couldn't set fence posts yesterday yet.

Linda, tap those maples! Boiling syrup is pretty easy, but it takes 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup, and each tree will yield "about" enough sap to make a quart.

Boil it outside, though, that syrup laden steam will coat everything in your kitchen with a sticky maple coating. Nope, it wasn't me, it was Aunt LulaBelle, LOL.

When I "retire", I just might tap the maples again....
