No audio and no system restore

A couple of days ago my DH went to the Start menu, chose Run, typed in msconfig and when System Configuration Utility opened he checked Diagnostic Start Up. At first he was pleased with the results because his computer was quicker to respond and just generally faster, but then it became apparent that he had no audio nor did his System Restore option work. He no longer had Help and Support available on his start up menu either.

He went back through the same channels and checked Normal Startup like it once was set on, but that doesn't seem to fix anything either.

Does anyone have an idea what checking the Diagnostic Start Up has caused and how it can be corrected? Did he disable the audio driver, etc?

Thanks for any help.

he did reboot after selecting normal startup correct?
he should check that the startup option for Normal Startup on the first tab is selected and make sure that the SAFEBOOT check box is UNCHECKED on the BOOT.INI tab.

also you should know that Diagnostic Startup deletes System Restore Points.

"If you do NOT clear the selection for "Load System Services", the System restore points would be retained due to the fact, for one, that System Restore service would still be enabled. "
If you UNCHECKED "Load System Services" in a "Selective Startup". De-selecting "Load System Services" will temporarily disable Microsoft services (such as, Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting) as well as permanently deleting all restore points for the System Restore utility. You should not, therefore do this if you either want to retain your restore points for System Restore or if you're likely to need to use a Microsoft service to further investigate the problem you're having.) On the other hand, "Diagnostic Startup" involves a step by step monitoring of basic device drivers and services. It allows you to monitor and check each of those drivers and services.

Have you tried going into services at msconfig and making sure all your normal services are still set to auto or on?
Have you Tried "Last Known Good Configuration" from the F8 startup selection screen?

Regarding my comments about in-wall/ceiling speaker placement, it was in regards to common walls & ceilings/floors. Even if there are no common walls, sound travels through the framing members and can "get into" other areas. Just something I wanted to make sure you consider. You know, that guy at the stop-light next to you with the "boom-boom-boom" type of thing! As far as ipod/ipad control, the current offering has been from companies such as Savant, Crestron, and other upper tier manufacturers. While costs vary depending on your location, installation requirements, equipment, and a whole host of other variables, you're in the $20K plus area to get into that type of setup. The good thing is that the ipad has created a buzz within CE industry (which has been grasping at straws lately - you know that 3D thing...), and we will start seeing more products with networked ipad control capabilities. There is a company that sells a product - RedEye - that converts your ipad into a WiFi-to-IR transmitter for a couple hundred dollars - but I'll let you read the reviews... On the other hand, things are only going to get better as far as ipod/ipad options. By traditional, I mean running in-wall rated speaker wiring to each area from a central distribution point. You run into each room, go to an in wall speaker level control, and then to your in-wall/ceiling speakers. At your central distribution point, you use an impedance matching speaker selector, connected to a good quality receiver. There are RF wireless remotes from companies such as Logitech - Harmony - that can re-broadcast the signal from the remote in any room, to your "equipment rack." While all this is flux, and technology is constantly changing, you can put together something economically that can be upgraded, without feeling too bad, in a few years or even a few months.

We have a dedicated audiophile room (Cary Amp, Wilson Wattpuppy speakers, etc) and we also have whole house audio. Shopped a lot for a whole house system. Didn't want the expense and complexity of Crestron (though our Crestron dealer never mentioned the Adagio system which seems elegant and not obscenely over-priced). We ended up going with a Speakercraft MZC-88 controller with the MODE keypads. Selling points at the time (6 months ago) were the 50W per channel and the excellent keypads. The keypads look and feel a lot like the ipod interface. 2-way communication allows you to browse your ipod library from any room in the house and select songs. You can connect 8 zones and 6 ipods as inputs to the MZC-88. I'd recommend checking it out. It also allows pre-amp outputs to higher quality amps. The weakest link in most of these set-ups are the in-wall/ceiling speakers so doubt you will find the amp insufficient. Also check out the Nuvo Grand Concerto and the newer Niles intellicontrol ICS. Programming on the Speakercraft is easy enough to DIY. Haven't tried any of the other systems.

I'll email you for the names but as DH and I have continued to talk, I think we are realizing that we are not really even sure what it is that we are paying for...we're wondering if we just go buy the hardware, can our electrician set it all up? We are interested in setting up a surround sound system for our new family room tv as well as a couple of ceiling speakers in the living room for our stereo. Want to be able to listen to the stereo in the family room as well. How complicated is this set-up? Is it really a specialty, if we research the quality of hardware we want? (I discovered the Home Entertainment forum today as well after posting here and I posted there and am hoping there might be some activity there.)

With every wireless wi-fi speaker there will need to be a power source and was about to add this fact but @anj_p beat me to it. As far as sound quality it is true wired is better than wi-fi but with the right speakers it could be hard to tell the difference. Each Wi-fi speaker will basically have a small built in receiver with a decoder and a class D power amplifier, along with the speakers and frequency crossover circuitry. All of these components in the speakers need to be top quality (and usually be of a matching brand) along with a wi-fi signal with no interference. With quality wi-fi speakers and a good wi-fi signal the difference would be negligible, but going cheap with inferior components the difference could be nearly unbearable comparable to a 2 star motel lobby or a big box store. So be prepared to pony up the cash for top quality speakers. Other reasons Music isn't reproduced to to a flawless enjoyment level is Using D class amplifiers, (and basically universal today) because they sacrifice some high fidelity for efficiency and reduced size and cheap to make, but still good little amps for most people. How you download audio files also makes a difference, when downloaded a large file it is compressed into a smaller file and some information is removed and discarded never to be reproduced again that you will never hear. Combine all of above with bad acoustics in a room and the result is a muddled mess. This is why audiophiles resort to quality class A and A/B transistor or vacuum tube power amplifiers, vinyl and CD's music sources that pump large amounts of power to big speaker systems. It's not for everyone but I would suggest going to a orchestra hall if you've haven't before and witness what real music sounds like, then decide if you want wired or wi-fi for your entertainment area and what kind of equipment to buy.

You need to hit "Apply" Then "ok" and reboot after checking normal start up..

So far, nothing has worked but I appreciate all of the advice and suggestions.

Although the Normal Startup is checked and you can click "apply", it immediately changes the "ok" option to "close".

Try this,

1. Restart your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
3. Select the option for LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION using the arrow keys.
4. Then press enter on your keyboard.

No audio and no system restore
