well deleting a facebook account is not really easy. You can deactivate it but believe me that is not the end of it! that does NOT delete it or your info. I try to make everyone understand you MUST take a lot of steps and effort to get this task done which should be a simple thing but they really don't want you to go so get ready to jump through those hoops! It's true that you don't blame the medium because people are stupid and addicted to their cellphones, "social media" resources, etc, but it's BECAUSE people are stupid and addicted to their cellphones "social media" resources, etc, is just another reason I *don't* do MySpace, I *don't* do Facebook, I *don't* look for dates on Craigslist, I *don't* "tweet" or participate in any of the other technological addictions. I don't need these pacifiers to stay in touch with people. There's plenty of other, far better ways to do stay in touch. Used to be "sex, drugs and rock & roll" were the addictions of the day. Now it's cellphone, text and Facebook/social media. Whenever I see someone who can't resist checking every time that leash sounds a chime, can't resist thumbing away at it when it does and can't go an hour without checking their "page" I can't help but wonder if we shouldn't give a special lane on the roads so we can cull the herd a bit. I joined Facebook a few months ago and like it a lot. I've re-connected with a lot of people who used to be in our church, and a bunch more from college and law school. These are people I always liked, but we grew apart over time, as people do. I probably wouldn't sit down and write them an email or a letter or call them, but Facebook provides just a bit of contact. I'm interested to see their kids and hear a little about their jobs, and I like the odd comment about something interesting in their lives. This is about the right amount of contact for a number of my cousins, too. I am fond of them, but we really only see one another at funerals. I like seeing a little more of them on FB. I don't send food or hugs, I take lots of quizzes but post few of them, and I block posts from anyone who plays "Mafia Wars." I have things set to be pretty private, too. I also love the "Six Degrees of Separation" aspect, where you discover that an acquaintance from work knows your kid's friend's mom.:)

I signed up but decided to cancel when I realized it was trolling my PC for lots of personal information. It recommended all kinds of potential friends who were relevant but that it should not have had any way of knowing. FB had clearly scanned emails I'd sent and who knows what else. I also found pictures of all kinds of people I know and I wonder if they realize all that stuff is out there for anyone to see. If you don't know what you're doing you haven't necessarily made EVERYTHING private for only those you approve of. I decided as long as I am in a profession where I don't want business contacts to be able to learn all kinds of things about my personal life that I don't care to be active on Facebook. I can see how it allows people to easily keep up with a lot of people's activities without taking time to make a more personal contact with them - which apparently a lot of people like.
