Estitmates and people actually to do the work

We are in the process of getting estimates for the tile for our master bathroom remodel. It has been super difficult to get anyone to even come out let alone actual give a price.

So I finally got a quote on Friday from one place after 2 weeks and that is after I called and asked again.

The material for the tile was $1000. Not bad. The labor cost was $12,000. I think they just don't want to do it so he gave me a crazy price. I asked him to give me something written with it actually broke down costs. he said maybe Tuesday. I doubt I ever hear from him again. This is not just a one man type show place either.

I was just wondering what everyone else is dealing with on getting estimates or getting people to actually want to do the work.

Another company came out Thursday and he has supposed to have an estimate for me Wednesday.

I had another person scheduled for Thursday and they didn't show up until Friday at a random time when I was still at work. Not sure how that miscommunication happened since they called me to confirm Thursday. Needless to say that didnt impress me.

If you're having this many issues with everyone you've contacted, then you're sending out some signals that tell contractors that they don't want to deal with you. What those signals are, I have no idea, but you can bet that's the case if it's a universal response

How are you asking for quotes? Do you have a scope of work prepared? Is it detailed? Is it too detailed? How complex of a design might this be? Is the 12K for just the tile install, or for the whole bathroom remodel. For a tile install, it's outrageous. For a whole bath remodel, it's not that far out of the ballpark.

Basically I have just calling and walking into the tile stores. The one that stood me up I have been dealing with the salesperson but he was the installer so I have never even met him.

All I keep hearing is we are so busy. We have this job that job. I keep saying that's fine I just need to get on someone's schedule.

Nothing funky just tile laying. It is tile on the floor and a 48x48 shower. We want 2 niches a shower seat or corner seat and truley framless door. We will take care of everything else amd that might be the issue. Too small of a job and everyone says they are slammed.

The company that is supposed to give me an estitmate this week already told me I would be the last job of the year and it would be scheduled before Christmas and the only reason they would do it is because it is small.

Bathroom has been gutted already and we have a plumber because is a friend and has did the house when we built it. So that might be part of the problem.

How necessary a soil test may be depends a lot on your perception of the existing soil quality and fertility and what you intend to grow. If new to a location or garden, I generally suggest at least a baseline test to determine pH and average fertility. This at least will provide a starting point to determine if you need to amend the soil before planting or not. If one is only planting ornamentals, additional testing is probably unnecessary. Routine mulching/topdressing or adding organic matter (like compost) periodically will ensure that soil fertility is maintained and any supplemental fertilization will be indicated by plant performance - if everything is growing well, carry on! If one is growing edibles or harvestable crops as opposed to just landscape ornamentals, periodic soil testing maybe more appropriate. These crops do remove nutrients from the soil as they are harvested or removed each season and that is often not fully compensated for just by adding mulch or compost. Often supplemental fertilzation is very necessary and that can be most easily addressed by having a new soil test done every few years to determine what is lacking or deficient. To expand on a couple of Ken's comments :-) Fertilizer manufacturers and suppliers, like Scotts or Miracle Gro, are in the business of selling their product. They would like you to believe that your garden will be a failure unless you use their product on a regular and frequent basis. This is a bunch of BS!! Too frequent or excessive fertilization is often worse than not fertilizing at all. It produces lush, rapid growth that is often weak and prone to insect and disease issues, plants are often far less drought tolerant and require more frequent watering and the excessive fertilizer chemicals leach in to groundwater and streams and contibute heavily to pollution. And trees DO pull or remove nutrients from the soil, so new plantings close to the root zones of large established trees may need additional attention. Very often, this is most easily addressed by incorporating organic matter - like compost - into the area before planting and mulching on a regular basis thereafter.

I have seen many a dryloked basement where the drylok was peeling and a black mold was growing behind it or showing through as a dark stain usually towards the bottom of the wall. My applications on basement walls and floors is always with Hydroseal 75. This is a waterbase epoxy that is mixed 1 to 1 prior to paint on application. One great feature is it is odorless and another is it is applied with paint rollers and brushes. I always paint out a rollers lenght on the floor and if there is a gap where the floor meets the wall I mix concrete sand mix into the Hydroseal 75 and make a mortar that I can force into the gap or joint with the back of a spoon. Then two coats over the entire area I am coating does the trick. 1 day to apply 2 coats and patching , all with one product. I have not found anything better and easier to apply or anything that stops water better. This is easy epoxy to work with, has no smell, comes with an anti microbial added so it will not support mold growth and is sold in singles gallons or pails so you can buy as little as you like or do a test area with a gallon. I use the gray almost always but it is available in white as well. The white can be pigmented with universal tint. I have also mixed it with hydraulic cement in very wet situations where the concrete was to wet to let the Hydroseal dry, and I have sprayed the Hydroseal 75 through an airless spayer to do a stone foundation over 100 years old. Mostly though I roll it and patch with it. this stuff works great and there is a need for this type of product. Not all coatings peel off; like the guy said above, you need a coating that is used in elevator pits that can stand high amounts of pressure like Hydroseal 75

We both work full time...my DS at a less demanding 9-5pm job at a university, me at a 50-60hr week + travel management consulting firm. We're remodeling our entire home interior--every room. Plus massive plumbing, electrical, and HVAC upgrades. We hired an architect to draw up the plans, and a GC is doing all the work. I am personally playing the role of interior designer/finish chooser. That being said this project has been a 40 hour a week second job. To make it easier we: 1) MOVED OUT. I can't even imagine how naive we were thinking "oh we could stay and they could move room to room." It would have taken far longer to complete it and would have ruined our life (no exaggeration). 2) PLANNED EXTENSIVELY. There are so many decisions you have to make in a remodel and so many surprises. To keep these items to a manageable level, think out everything in advance that you can and make sure it's in the budget. It will cut down on the mistakes, stress, and change orders. The idea of some people who don't know whatcounter top they want until they put in their cabinets--I couldn't operate that way. 3) ACCEPTED THE AFFECTS ON MY CAREER. I'll be honest with you all--I got a middling mid-year performance review last month. "You don't seem engaged." "Your not selling enough new business" "you haven't done anything 'extra' this year" -- you just have to be at peace with the fact that a major reno has side affects in a lot of areas of your life, including your career. I was willing to sacrifice a better raise and add another year to my promotion timeline because there is no way you can add a 40 hour a week second job and not have it affect your first one. I honestly can't wait to get back my job and try to make up for my distraction this year--I was excited about this project when we started but I am so sick of going to Home Depot and the tile store all the time. When people bring their fundraisers to work -- What do you do ?

Our official workplace asks us to donate to the united way we get the envelopes, this is as far as workplace fundraising should go. There is no negative response if you don't, no one knows if you did or didn't so there are not any judgments on your character either way. Fundraising by individuals does not belong in the work place. Anyone who brings in such fundraising junk into the lunchroom at work finds it moved off the kitchen table and shoved on top of the fridge or the shelf unit in the corner of the room. Expecting co workers to pony up for your kid is not ok. If you want to walk you kids all over your neighbor hood or hit up relations more power to you. But I suspect many don't want to make that effort when they can just dump it in the lunchroom and guilt there co workers who they see everyday to just give them the money. Our department collects money at least once or twice a month for showers, going away gifts secret Santa etc. There are also people requesting to be sponsored for this ride or walk as well. Those fundraising say if you don't want to donate you don't have to. But when you don't what they really mean is why can't you just give us money everyone else gave whats wrong with you. They speak negatively about those who do not want to participate. It doesn't matter that you may not have the money to share or you don't want to give to that charity or school, or you already give to you own favorite charity. I ignore their request regardless of how they feel and move what ever it is away from the table. And let it be know that the table is kept clear except when you are eating at it.

I have been getting the run around too, and yes, it might be my own fault. After coming out, they submitted a bid. I made a few changes, and they revised.
We wound up waiting a few months because it took forever on the HELOC. I kept in touch with them to let them know we still wanted to stay on board, and what was going on.

Now that we are absolutely ready, they seem not to be. They are friendly and seem eager when I speak to them or email, but something's off. We made a review appointment, since it's been a while since they came out, and they missed it. They were very apologetic about that, but yes, I'm worried they don't want to work with us. Our fault, I know.
They are the only general contractor with an A+ on Angie's list by many customers in our area, so they are slammed with business and can't keep up. I'm thinking perhaps that with all of that, they simply don't want a $12K job. Much better is the $30K job!
Good luck to you - I hope you find someone to do this more reasonably than $12K.
