1 floor tile cracked after installation -- more cracks coming?
Comments (3)One thing to keep in mind. The cracking tiles are NOT the problem. They are a SYMPTOM of the problem. You need to locate the source of the movement, or you'll never get the tiles to stay in one piece. One thing you can check yourself right off, if this is over woodframe construction (and not concrete slab) and I hope I'm wrong-- something many sales people over look (so they can make the sale) is the fact that when using natural stone, the floor has to be literally TWICE as strong as it does for any other kind of flooring, including ceramic tile. What you want to do is go downstairs into the basement and take a look at the joists. Take measurements of how thick and tall the joists are (2x?), as well as their on center spacing, and their unsupported length. Take those measurements and go to the following web page and plug in the valures in the appropriate places. It'll tell you whether or not your joisting is strong enough for travertine, or any other kind of natural stone: Here is a link that might be useful: John Bridge's Deflectolator...See More20 x 20 tile on the diagonal?
Comments (13)Thanks everyone for your helpful replies! Monica, your picture is exactly the visual aid I needed. I am one of those people who has no imagination and cannot picture in my head how something will look. I always need to see an example. I can't thank you enough for posting this pic. I LOVE the way the large tiles look in this larger space. Funny thing is, I think I my bath tiles are the same ones you have in your kitchen! I'm not 100% positive because I don't have a sample tile in front of me at the moment, but from what I see in the picture, I sure think they are the same ones! Mongo, I re-read my original post and realize that I wasn't clear--I should have specified that I'm getting a corian shower pan. The tiles are going on the shower walls and bathroom floor. Bill, I will definitely discuss this with the contractor today. Even though it'll most likely cost more, this is one of those things I think will be worth splurging on. After seeing Monica's picture, I think it looks great and I'll be sorry if I don't do it....See MoreDiamond pattern 20x20 floor tile with 2x2 glass insets? Walls?
Comments (4)I have seen glass tiles used in floors -- but I don't believe every glass is floor-rated. I'd call around to try to find one that is, or else maybe introduce a third material -- maybe a slate? In the shower, you could run your tile up toabout the 48" mark, then have an accent strip made of glass and tile pieces. There are so many different design possibilities! Look for some pieces called 'cigar rails' or 'half-rounds' to use as border strips. You can find them in glass and a variety of natural stones. You may also be able to mix a natural or man-made composite 'travertine' into a border and carry it off, even though your tile is ceramic. Another option would be metal tiles. Those could tie into your fixtures and hardware and be mixed with the glass as well....See MoreFirst day of shopping for tile, wood like flooring
Comments (3)Actually, I'd consider it BECAUSE of the dogs. The Timber Glen is a thru body color porcelain. IOW, it's not glazed, which means that first of all, being porcelain, it's going to be a tough tile to start off with. Secondly, even on the off chance that it DOES chip-- you wouldn't readily see it, because the color goes all the way through. As for the other tiles, I've never heard of Happy FLoors, but I HAVE heard of Cerdomus, and their tile is also all unglazed thru body color porcelain. It's also some of the toughest tiles I've ever worked with. I sincerely believe that you could drive a truck over those tiles... WITH ICE CHAINS... and still not hurt them. It's the only line of tiles that I have a special blade for my wet saw just to cut them, because a normal blade won't do. This is no exaggeration....See MoreRelated Professionals
