Problem Solved; What Was it?

13 years ago

Well I solved this terrible problem but wonder what it was? Where it came from? Who generated it? Why? From Google it seems to have popped up here and there thru the years with various computers - nothing consistent that I could see. No definite solution offered. Here's how it went-

I hit any key to wake comp up got desktop then black screen with:

The following config options were automatically updated:
CD-ROM Lite-on Combo SOHC-4836K
Disk 80.0GB WDC WD 800JD-60LASO
If you are running UNIX you need to configure your system using the Computer Setup Utility F10. HP Compaq dc7600 sff

So I managed to get to Setup which wasn't easy. Had to hit ctrl-alt-delete then F10 real quick like (missed it a couple times). Turning the comp off/on with the power button also got me to the F10 option. I slogged thru setup to Default Setup and had the choice of:
Save Current as Default
Restore to Factory
So I chose Current. It then took the comp several minutes to recover from that jolt but it eventually came up for air and runs just fine.

Ah but wait there's more:

During my thrashing around there appeared this mssg:

Non system disk or disk error
Replace and strike any key when ready.

HUH??? Ctrl-alt-delete got me out of that pickle and to where I could hit F10 (except I wasn't fast enough).
========
What the H*ll was that all about?
