Sink and storage options

I posted a few weeks ago asking for input on vanities. I am now exploring the idea of pedestal sinks - and Houzz has the perfect photo to illustrate my idea:

My concern is that the room will be echo-y because we will be replacing vinyl flooring and an acrylic shower insert with tile, The room is 12.5' x 13.5'.

Has anyone done the pedestal sinks v. double vanity thing? Has anyone experienced significant increases in echo/noise by adding tile? I do plan to add a large rug, as there is a lot of floorspace and my toes don't like the cold.

I wouldn't mind one one pedestal sink, but don't like the above arrangement because of water splashing the walls. My choice would be one oval sink in the middle of a long vanity and two banks of drawers below. You could put all most or all of your under garments in the drawers plus the usual stuff.

We have a double console in our master bath. We have pedestals or consoles everywhere else. I know I am in the minority but personally I love it -- would have done two separate pieces in the master except my husband wanted a bit of counter space. If you are concerned about water splashing you could get sinks with integral backsplashes.

I got the perlite at a local nursery, so I'm sure it's the right stuff, and it says it's a larger size...not sure how it's worded, but it seems to be bigger than the usual BB size feeling it through the bag. I plan on making some up as soon as it's warm enough to be in the garage without wearing my coat! My real worry is the size of the bark. I know it is the same bark this nursery uses for its roses and other containers. They mix it with peat and sand. They had actually told me I didn't need the lime...but I'll go with you Al, having lost entirely too many tomatoes to BER. (It wasn't poor watering, really! Had to be the calcium. ;-) LOL!) But a lot of it is definately bigger than 1/4 inch. We'll see how much I can get screening it. It's less than 1/2 inch though. I figure if it is between 1/2 and 1/4 I can use it for gritty mix, right? Or mulch-always need mulch.

I have an old home and storage was lacking so we actually added wardrobes to our bathroom to house our seasonal clothes and I love them! I also have free standing tables with small drawers. One near the shower for clean face clothes and product and one with a small drawer for femine product by the toilet and a bench made with creates that holds baskets for nail polishes, lotions, cleaning supplies etc. our vanity has drawers for hair dryer, irons, toothpaste, makeup and medicines. It is all unconventional but works perfectly for us.

I would want what I need for storage out there . I find no matter how great the cabinets are dust gets in there somehow so I use drawers for outdoor dishes and drink ware and usually put all of that in my basement store room in the winter. I have outdoor vinyl placemats in a drawer too and I have a hanging rack above my grill for utensils I use for grilling .I use the cabinet under the grill for the cover and one to the side for the propane and the other side for the cleaning brush , gloves etc. My husband also does BBQ so he has one 24” wide drawer cabinet for his stuff.

You can install high and low niches depending on the wall. The low niche will probably get really wet though and need wiping out after every shower. You could do one long high niche or maybe a ledge instead that spans the whole width of the shower, depending on if you have the width to do that. At my house, we put a niche opposite the shower head in 2 tub/shower combos. One of them wraps the corner and continues on the long wall a bit. They tend to not get very wet at all. At our vacation house, we just have the ordinary low soap dish in the tile wall for patents kneeling down to bath children. For additional products for an adult bather, we put a little stool next to the tub. Check with your tile pro regarding the walls and what your options are. We actually ditched 2 of the tubs in our recent vacation home remodel, but kept one for bathing kids. There’s a hot tub on the deck, and we found that almost no adults were using the inside tubs over the last 20 years, so we built showers-only in 2 of the bathrooms. In the showers we didn’t build niches. Instead we put a bench and people tend to put their products on one side of the bench. We also installed a corner basket/grab bar that can hold a few things.

I love that look, and would have done it in a heartbeat, except DH nixed it, thinking we would lose too much storage.

There have been threads here discussing cleaning under an open vanity being harder than a vanity with a toe kick. With the cabinet/dresser you can easily move it to clean (or swap it out to change the look of the bathroom)

We recently took out vinyl flooring and replaced it with tile, and replaced a cultured marble shower surround and tub with a tiled shower. I haven't noticed it being louder or "echo-y" at all.

Thanks for the input. Oaktown, I love that sink!! We have so much storage already built in elsewhere in the room, that I'm not worried. Right now, we each use a couple of drawers, and can easily consolidate. DH really liked the pedestal idea early on; I was skeptical because I thought it would be too bare. Once I thought of the dresser - and found lots of Houzz inspiration, I was sold. Attached is the tile we hope to use on the floor and shower. Walls will have beadboard wainscot up to 4' or so.

I love your idea. Saves you the cost of a stone counter top too. Or you could have a marble top put on an old dresser. I think it would be totally functional as long as the dresser was at counter level. I thought of using a higher chest with more drawers if you don't have a window to design around, but you'd lose the lower dresser surface to lay down a blow dryer, shaver, etc. My only concern is the ease of opening drawers and the odor that usually is in old dressers. So I'd probably want something new.

I'm going to look at Houzz today for those inspiration photos! What search words did you use to find them?
