kitchen storage options for “coffee nook” area

Hey all! We just recently moved and we’re having some issues figuring our what to do with this corner space. Our major dilemma is that we don’t have a pantry and limited storage space. (Literally everything you see strewn across our counters need a home) Before we moved, I thought that we could possibly just do open shelving, which is definitely an option (and I like that we could make it match the other floating shelves in the kitchen)(also a big fan of the wood and metal/industrial look: modern farmhouse/mid century modern feel, with a splash of boho :))
But, the corner area is 26 deep (left wall & counter width) x 18 7/8 and with it being a corner we would have to come up with some ideas on the free corner stabilization (unless we do an L shaped shelf).

OR we could do a lone cabinet. And I’m open to other options as well. Like mate a hutch on this large wall to the left of the kitchen. I still want it to be as open as possible, but usable and efficient.

Do you mean the corner to the right of the windows where there is wood (with black pipe) support shelving now? Are you trying to make that more useful?

And/or do you mean the corner with the cabient appearing to face the hall?

With the former, consider buying another overhead (corner) cabinet.

For the base cabinet facing the hallway, remove it entirely and create a floor to ceiling pantry, preferably accessible from both kitchen side and hall side.

Chispa-I did look on Houzz, but I didn't see that particular photo for some reason. Thanks for posting it. I showed it to the cabinet maker, so we will see. I am not crazy about the slat doors, although I realize they are necessary for venting purposes. Hartwood, Fori, Maggie-I think I am going to end up with them sidexside under counter. I'm not sure if I'm going to have pocket doors built for them, since I suspect they will be left open most of the time anyway. Mags438-What E'Lux set are you considering? I went to Best Buy yesterday and they all seemed to be the same depth, although I did not have a measuring tape with me. The shallower depth would be wonderful, since I have to buy an extra deep counter. I'm planning on doing walnut, I think. So here is the rendering I did of the sxs next to a storage closet. Sorry it looks like it was done by a 7 year old, my PS skills are about at that level. There is a fireplace on that brick wall, I just couldn't find an internet photo similar.

Funky camper: thank you for the notes/ideas! I read the note about the basket for library books and wondered if you could see into my living room (where the basket of library books is generally underfoot). I've printed out your marked-up photo. Kelleg, my sister-in-law did something similar and I really like their standing desk (now I know the term!). I've been spending this afternoon trying to figure out if I could somehow combine the laptop and phone charging with a wine bar. Just because I don't [shouldn't] use those things at the same time doesn't mean I can't have them in the same space, right? I realized that I'd been tempted by lots of nice looking kitchen desks in photos but that I can't envision myself sitting there (and I think the kids have lots of other places to sit).

The size seems fine but we'd need a width of the island to be 100%. Over the kitchen nook, I'd use something different but has the same feel. The size coordinates, not to the other pendants, but to the table. A 6 ft table would look odd with a 15 inch pendant nor should a chandelier be larger/wider than the table.

I like the suggestions to make the bay a seating area, with a window seat or two chairs and a small table, especially since the coffee center is right there. Here's a plan to make the work aisle wider by adjusting the depth of the island; it would be longer and would need legs to support the top over the shallower cabinets. I labeled it 30" x 84", but it could be a couple of inches deeper if it doesn't cause a pinch point at either back corner. If 30" depth is used, the overhang wouldn't quite be the NKBA minimum of 15", since the front overhang would be at least 1" and the back cover panel could be anything from a cabinet skin (1/4" or less) to a decorative panel (ap 3/4"). You have such a long stretch of counter space, and a wide area between the windows, so if you can find it in the budget, I'd suggest a 36" range with a 42" hood above, with uppers adjusted to have equal reveals on each side of the widows. That wouldn't leave a very wide prep area between the main sink and range, so a prep sink between the fridge and range would work well to separate the work zones. The counter on the fridge wall is extra deep, to match the depth of a standard fridge box, and the base corner is voided in favor of drawers on each side. MW is in an upper cabinet, and the corner is voided, or if there's space you could use an EZ-Reach door. I realize this adds to the budget, but if you don't use cabinets and countertop in the bay that would help offset the costs. NKBA guidelines New to Kitchens? Read me first. This corner. There is a return vent for our air conditioning underneath the counter.

How you plan to use the cabinet matters. If you want a coffee maker on that countertop, just add an overhead cabinet above the ?thermostat? but would try to minimize open shelving.

You might consider a combination of shelf and cabinet.

You could add one open shelf (shallow rather than deep ) above the light switch and electrical outlet, so you can reach/use the switch and outlet but leave open the space from that shelf to above the ?thermostat? (if that needs to stay in place). You could put your spices or coffee related items a shallow wood tray that sits on that open shelf.

You'd still have access to and use of the countertop.

Then you could go ahead and add a full overhead cabinet above that ?thermostat?.

You could have doors to access that overhead cabinet from both the kitchen and hallway and either door could have shallow shelves within the door.

Yes. It is a thermostat, so unable to move without a bit of difficulty. Really it’s just trying to figure out storage with trying to make it look visually appealing as well. I like the combination option.

What is the far-left (the walkway to the next room) wall going to be used for? Could you do a wall of shallow pantry storage there? It's hard to tell how much clearance you have there. You would want there to be adequate walking space, but if there is extra room, you could install 2 shallow wall pantries, with drawers below instead of cabinets, and put a coffee-bar in between with open shelving above.
