Tub v.s. Shower

We're thinking of taking our drop in tub out of our master bathroom, tiling the whole thing and just having a shower. It's a split, with the dressing room/sink in the entry, and the tub/shower and toilet in a seperate (tiny!) room. Removing the tub I think would make it look/feel bigger, but I'd be concerned about resale value. The second bath has a tub and shower, so we'd still have one for kids, etc. We have a jacuzzi, so losing the tub wouldn't be that big of a deal for me.

Any suggestions would be great!

I think the consensus here is that as long as there's a tube someplace in the house, it shouldn't affect resale value. I'm a bath person myself, but certainly there are heaps of folks these days who would much rather have a deluxe shower than a tub.

I believe that one potential drawback is that according to code a tub can have a 1 1/2" drain, whereas a shower requires a 2" drain, which can make the process more complicated than simply removing the tub and installing a shower in it place. The drain and vent lines may have to be replaced all the way to the main stack.

Do you have grand-kids, or are you expecting any near your guest bedrooms? If so, do consider having tubs (at least a small 5 foot inexpensive one) for baths. You won't regret that, especially for resale. As for your Master Bath, ask a realtor friend and they will likely tell you it's 'best' for re-sale for a 5-piece Master too, but if you'd much rather have the extra-large shower than a smaller shower and tub, then go for the larger shower and forget the tub. We have an oversized shower (dual heads, etc) and absolutely love it. We have a big jacuzzi tub too and it's nice but doesn't get a whole lot of use. Our overall bathroom is quite large, but if I were limited on space, the tub would be the first to go or at least downsize. As you age, you will probably find a better use for a walk-in shower with things you can add in your later remodel (hand-held rails, bench, etc) than a tub that is hard to step into.

That alcove is designed to house a tub only, not a tub shower unit. You can't "repurpose" what's there without water damage to your floor, window, and behind your walls. The tub itself not designed to be used that way, and neither is the window designed to be in a wet area. You'd need to rip it all out and start over by installing a smaller and waterproof window, then installing a tub that had an integral tile flange which is part of the waterproofing system needed. Then your waterproofing membrane and whatever wall cladding you might want.

Are you looking for something that adds function or for looks? A small table next to the tub would hold a drink. Do people actually read in the tub? I once tried but logistically it seemed more difficult than relaxing with a book in bed.

Hi. Yes, this can be done if you replace the tub filler you currently have with one that includes an outlet hole for a shower riser. These are some examples: Here and here. Just make sure to get one with the same number of holes (and space between the holes) that you've currently got.

Not this woman! We built our house with no tub in the master. We have a large doorless shower with 2 shower heads that is used daily. We have a tub in the guest bath that has been used once or twice in the 3 years that we have lived in this house. One tub to dust in the house is plenty for me!
