Firewall

This morning my computer says I have no firewall turned on.

Try to turn on Windows firewall and it says the associated service is not running.Then it says it cannot turn on Windows firewall. What do I do?

You may well be infected. This is a good indicator, these things turn off the firewall, stop the anti virus and can make it difficult for you to access safety programs online.

Run either Superantispyware or Malwarebytes - or both to be sure. Update the definitions first of course. Is your anti virus still running or has that also been turned off?

Click Start, click Control panel, click Security. What do you see there?

Yes, McAfee is an incoming and outgoing firewall, although you can change a setting so that you're not notified if a program attempts to access the Internet (but that's not advised). Basically, the built-in Windows firewall is better than nothing at all, but not by much. If you want real protection, get the McAfee, especially since your ISP offers it at no cost to you. Until you get the McAfee installed, you should at least be using the Windows firewall. But as soon as you install McAfee, you should disable the Windows firewall.

You have Vista which has a 2 way firewall already. However take a squint here for some firewall comparisons. You will find Ghost Firewall listed at #20 in the "Firewalls Fading Away or Gone Completely" list well down the page.

Routers are pretty good firewalls but for an added closed door, most people turn on the computer firewall too. fwiw.. I've configured many computers for family and friends without firewalls,,, so a couple of days were certainly no problems. One computer here Was online 24/7 for years that ran lan server duty. mail, DNS, Time, WWW server, etc... no firewall, no problems ever. It got junk mail on its mail account name that was never ever used online. Computer was only used by guests and me occassionly for browser duty when I screw up and need a driver or something.

My firewall blocked 22. What is it.

Looks like bits of the Chrome browser, 1 is in a temp folder, the other 2 are in the application data folder, trying to up date and asking for Internet Permission.

I ran both.10 tracking cookies. that's all. Anti virus is still running.I downloaded ZoneAlarm and now Security Center sys Firewall on AntiVirus on and Automatic Updates on. Did I do right? The red Shield is gone now. Thank you Eileen
