Moving data to new computer

Good Morning!

We have an old PII with Windows 98 (nope, not SE, although I think I have the disk.) Our new box has Vista. Is there a straightforward way to move photos and links and such via USB cable, or do I have to click and drag files to flash drives?

A better way would be with a network if both PCs have network cards. If they do, you can get a crossover cable, set up file sharing and transfer files that way.

There are USB transfer cables that will transfer between two PCs, but they require software and I don't know whether you'll find any that support Windows 98.

Mark I feel your pain. I went through the EXACT same situation two years ago. If you have a burner in old faithful, or you can borrow an external and locate some Win98 compatible software, you might want to just burn to CD to transfer. I tried other ways and got tired of conflicts and disappointments. With Win98 OE (Original Edition) I couldn't even get a thumb drive to work.

I used an old version of Roxio. I can't be certain, but I think it was v5.0.

If you install xmarks on the browser and set it up to save your bookmarks then you can go to the second computer install xmarks on it and have it sync it will automatically put everything you had on the first onto the second plus it keeps them all on a safe website that you have access to from any computer any where, you just need your name and password. I use it on all of mine. Just be sure to get the version for your browser. Xmarks. Com Usually to copy the files to flash drive you can right click on the file name and choose copy to then select the usb flash drive, you want to copy not move or cut, that will leave them on the original drive should you need them there again. If you want to copy an entire folder just right click on the folder and choose to copy it to the usb flash drive. Be absolutely sure to use the safety remove icon before removing the flash drive, it will appear down by the clock when the flash drive is inserted into the pc. Always do this.

Hi, I'm new here and hope I can help you out. This is how I retrieved my mail from OE from and old windows program to Windows XP Hopefully it will work for you. Back Up Outlook Express Messages Microsoft stores Outlook Express messages in a subfolder buried deep beneath the Windows folder, where it's nearly impossible to back up. That can mean disaster if you have a disk crash, or if you replace your PC. When you restore your backed-up data files, you discover that your email is gone! Fortunately, Outlook Express 5.5 (included as a component of IE 5.01 with Service Pack 1 and in IE 5.5) allows you to change the default location where messages are stored, making it easier to back them up with your other files. Follow these steps: Open your My Documents folder, right-click on any empty space, and choose New, Folder from the shortcut menu. Because you'll use this new folder to hold your mail messages, give it a descriptive name like My Mail. From the main Outlook Express window, pull down the Tools menu, choose Options, and click the Maintenance tab. Click the Store Folder button. This opens a dialog box that allows you to select the folder where you want Outlook Express messages to be stored. Click the Change button. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the folder you created in Step 1 and click OK. Note that the path to your My Mail folder now appears in the Store Location dialog box. Click OK to save this change, and click OK to the warning message that appears next. Close the Options dialog box, and then close and restart Outlook Express. All your message files are now in a convenient location in the My Documents folder. Back up the entire contents of your My Documents folder today and you'll be well protected from data disasters! Now that you have them saved in a new file...... Save on a disc just like you did your other files. In your new computer, Go to OE mail and open... Go to File..Import.. messages Select Program - Example (Microsoft outlook express 6) Specify location - Import from an OE6 store directory Location of messages - Browse to fine your file. Select Folders you want to import - Click Next and it will add them to your new Outlook Express. You can do just the ones you want or pick them all at once. Good Luck to you.

Bob - Good Grief is right. But it's probably not as bad as it sounds. One of the problems is that before I found this forum a year ago (and had some sense of saving files to the appropriate place), not only did my husband and I just save files (with no regard to where they were being placed) - we also had 2 different computer guys help at various times - and I've discovered that one of them took it upon himself to set up some folders and put items there (he set up a Lynn's documents) when he transferred data from one computer to another. Now I can see why he set up my own folder (since my husband and I shared a computer in those days) - but he never told me he was doing that- so lo and behold - I have an entire Lynn's documents folder that I never use but contains some of my older files. yeah - I guess it's a lot to sort. Personally, your method makes sense to me - just set up folders in the C drive for the categories I'm interested in. I'm now the only one on my computer - so I don't think I need a "my documents" folder (and certainly not a separate "Lynn's documents" folder). I am so glad to have found this forum and decided to get mastery and comprehension of my computer. Having professionals set things up - but not bother telling you what and why they did things - just complicates everything. And the pictures are also a mess bc. this helpful computer guy put picasa on my pc - which grabbed every picture - so that many pictures appear in picasa and elsewhere. It's the picture finding and organizing that seems the most daunting. Videos and music I've done myself in the past year - no one else has touched it but me. Word files are manageable too. BP - my question about the Tivo files is that I want to sit in my living room, have Tivo search my computer to see what's on it. That's what I'm thinking has to be in the Tivo desktop program. When I'm at my computer, I think I can find the videos anywhere - I'm just thinking that no matter where they came from (Tivo desktop, hulu, my camcorder, edited in Videoredo), that I might somehow have to move them all to My Tivo Recordings folder in order to access it using the Tivo and watching tv. Do I have that right? Jemdandy - that's one interesting way to approach the 2 drives - one for programs and one for data files. But then I'd be backing up data files to yet another place. I have a 500GB hard drive and am thinking of adding a second 1TB hard drive. So both drives have lots of room. Except for video files, I would think my c drive could easily handle my programs and data files (music, documents and pictures) - and the software and those files could be on the c drive and backed up to the second internal drive. Is there a reason - in terms of improved performance, etc - to use the c drive only for software? Does that add an extra step if I want to use one of my software programs (say photo editing) and have to go to the other drive to get the actual photos to work on? Or is it just as quick to run a program on one drive and get the data from the other? [Okay - good grief, it is]. Thanks everyone. Lynn.

I am going out of what's left of my mind... Rechecked the connections all is OK on that front. Tried to install drivers from miniCD that came with enclosure, but they were for Windows 98 only. Light does come on for enclosure when powered up. My computer sees a USB mass storage unit attached as it tells me this device would run better with a USB 2.00 port.(I have l.0, I guess) Device Mgr.says this device is there and working properly but it will not show up on "My Computer" to be accessed. I even went into DOS prompt and at random typed in various drive letters and after G:(CDRW) nothing clicked in..and I got up to the letter R:!! Just got bright idea...I am going to Nexstar website for clues...thanks for your input...keep it coming...bye for now.

there is this awesome little device called the tornado which makes doing that job very easy, you plug into each pc usb port and a split screen comes up for you to just move stuff from which ever one you want to move from or to. I did read it works with 98 with the install of it's driver, it works with out special drivers on all other windows systems.

Wow! DA, you beat me to it! I spent a long time trying to find a free burner that could be used on Windows 98, and most I found were for 98SE.

I just took a peek here and see where my link is in error. The link is for an update to v5.0 not the full version. We still have to locate a link for that version. I personally will continue looking.

I found as time went on and the support for Win98 OE expired that there is a huge compatibility issue for peripherals and software between versions OE and SE.

Before I started ferreting around for a Easy CD v5.0 I thought about Nero. Below is a link for prior versions of a commercial trial. Beginning with v 7.5.9.0a and back it is reported they work with all versions of Windows.

If it were myself I would go back as far as I was comfortable to reduce concerns with Win98 OE.

Something that would be even faster (and maybe easier) would be to pull the drive from the old machine and put it in the new one, then copy the data and put the drive back in the old PC. You might need to change the jumpers on the drive to make it a slave unless it's set up as cable select.

Well, I thought I'd follow up and let you know what I did- I bought a flash drive with enough space to carry most of my data files, plugged it in, and did a click and drag of the photo files, which was most of 'em.

Then I gave it to my wife and said "Look, Honey, here's all your pictures!" and she is delighted and is figuring out how to move them to the new box, which is rapidly becoming "her computer".

Funny how these things work!

Thanks again for all your help. I've sure leaned on you guys this last week or two, and it's been very helpful.

great to hear you were able to work it out and salvage your files always a good feeling.

I have one flash drive I keep all kinds of portable apps on and some of my fave files and photos etc so that no matter where I am I can just plug it in to a pc and feel at home.
