I realize that half of the problem is just getting used to something new. But its funny that people (including me) complain about the freezers in SxSs (especially small ones like a 33") yet one still holds a lot more than the big looking bottom freezer on a 36" FD counter depth. I suppose it also depends on how you use your frig. I don't just buy food for the week. I only buy meat opportunistically when I like the price, and I keep an assortment in the freezer so I can pick whatever I feel like to eat at any time. I had been managing to do that without a separate freezer. Now I do have the separate freezer, but its down in the basement, accessible only from the garage, so its not especially convenient to go there. I'd at least like to have enough every different kind of thing in the freezer for one meal. I'm not certain I will be able to manage that. But I really didn't have the room for anything bigger. I could have gone with std depth, but the new std depth refrigerators I was looking at were a lot deeper than my old one. The new FD isn't much shallower than my old std depth. Wouldn't have looked very good. But I will survive. Just griping.

I second the JennAir. Ours finally got installed last week and so far, so good. It's much nicer than the Maytag. The inside is configured a little differently, and the freezer is much better, IMO. The basket glides are nicer and the baskets are solid plastic instead of wire. And, I think the fridge just looks really nice to boot.

I have a Kenmore SS fridge, made by Whirlpool. It's three years old and has never even flinched at us. We chose it because it was ginormous and has a very bright interior. While looking at some models, you could tell that you'd need a flash light if you put any food in there. I just bought my home and it came with the original 1982 Jenn-Air drop-in range / oven. I don't care for the down-draft ventilation at all. Whoever thought that up was an oaf. Functionally, after 25 years, it's "fair". There's one thing that should be mentioned: "Brand" is no guarantee of quality or reliability anymore. (And you asked about reliability). Most manufacturers contract out the manufacture of their parts, so Company A in China makes the leaded water lines for your fridge and Company B makes the valves for the gas stove. Someone else puts them all together and calls them the brand of the day. The Brands merely "spec" the parts and the manufacturers produce to specs. And if the CEO wants a bigger bonus, they can allow lower-quality plastics, etc, in the middle of a production run. What a Brand does get you is specific kinds of service and support. Bosch may jump all over the chance to wow you on the rebound of a problem, yet the Jenn-Air group may not.

Jenn Air, Kitchen Aid, Viking are the same cabinet styles, made by Whirlpool Corporation. You will find two heights offered in the french door models without dispensers. However; Whirlpool is in transition mode with new models. This means you may find more selections than I said but also you could find a great buy on a closeout. I'm not sure if Samsung has finally went away from the magnetic seal setup they use to allow for both doors to close on the refrigerator. This magnetic seal is similar to the mechanisms used by Whirlpool in the early 80's that was so problematic that french door refrigerators disappeared for twenty years until the flap mechanisms on all Whirlpool made french doors was implemented.
