What have I done? Computer fonts/prints are LARGE

Altho' I'm a little computer saavy, I've definitely done something which I can not correct w/ anything I know to do. Can someone assist me?

I run Windows XP on my Dell computer. All was well until I mis-clicked on something & I'm now clueless.

Here's my problem. The taskbar at the bottom & top of my screen is much larger than normal, the scroll bar to the right of my screen is wider than normal, even the type I am doing right in this GardenWeb message window is too large. I find that in WordPerfect everything appears a bit larger also (meaning the blue top seems 'zoomed'.

I have the zoom on each window at 100%. If I lessen it to 75%, things shrink but that includes the webpage I'm viewing, leaving much of the page white on the right side.

I've looked into "Display" on the control panel for the pixel settings. Could this be what I need to 'clean up'? Is there a standard setting I should use? I've played with several of them & of course each time I have to readjust the settings on the front of my monitor (user more) to ensure the page fills the entire screen.

Oh my.....What have I done? Can anyone give me suggestions beyond keeping my fingers off of things in the future. :-) Thank you!!

Sounds like maybe you need to change the screen resolution. Right click an empty space on the desk top and click properties, then settings and move the resolution slider to the right. You may have to experiment to find the right resolution. Some monitors look much better in their native resolution-mine at 1280 x 1040.
I hope your video card is not failing in which case you may be unable to change the resolution-but lets not get into that yet.

Thank you Bob414 for responding. I did play some w/ resolution & it has helped; also went from normal text size to smaller. I don't have 1280 x 1040; mine is 1280 x 1024. I'm using true color; does that mean anything?

It still looks different from whatever setting I was using this morning, but things are looking better. Thank you again!

In a pinch you can highlight & copy the desired text. Open a word processing program and choose paste from Edit menu. If it is pages of text, click in front of the first word. Scroll to the end of the text and depress the shift key + another mouse click.

Now I'm looking at a screen with a large dark border around it...probably a 10" screen on a 14" monitor... How do I correct this goof? Since I don't know the answer right off the top of my head, I'm going to suggest you reboot computer (shut it down and turn it back on) and see if that doesn't correct things. Rebooting seems to often solve a lot of odd miscellaneous problems. Sue

Thanks zep & fruitjar! Yes, the printing window would pop up and the hour glass would stay on until the print job finished. I could only print one job at a time and sit and do nothing until the printing stopped. I did download SP3 [what a horror that was] a couple of months ago and had to get MS support to uninstall it all. That might have started the problem. Ofcourse, I always have non-essential programs running at the same time! I went to the HP site and got online support. It took a while to figure it out but it was resolved by going to Control Panel, Printers, R Click the printer icon, properties, advanced tab and changing selection from "print directly to printer" to "Spool print documents so program finishes faster". Yayyyy! I can again walk & chew gum at the same time! I can send more than one print job and keep on working. I NEVER changed that setting but I'm wondering if SP3 did. It is the root of all evil. Thanks~ I never occurred to me to go to the darn HP site.

I have always been a fan of the high end HP printers however last August when I moved from Ohio to Massachusetts my good printer somehow got packed in a container of household goods that was not scheduled to arrive here for another 6 weeks. For the first two weeks I was selecting photos to print and putting then on a flash drive which i then took to WalMart or my local camera store for printing but that was a real PITA. I happened to be in Staples on an unrelated errand and I saw a Kodak ESP 7250 printer scanner on sale for $99. I needed a new scanner so I thought what the heck, I'll try it. Right out of the box with the sample Kodak paper that came with the printer I was impressed, then I printed a couple 8x10 with some generic glossy photo paper and the best I could say is, they sucked. I went in the printer setup and changed from draft to Best quality, but with the generic paper the prints were still a mess, often coming out with way too much ink, feeling wet and they smudged when you touched them. Well, as they say, when all else fails, read the directions. I read the directions and did the setup routine to match the printer & paper, but even though it improved, I was still not happy. As I read the directions it said that Kodak recommended using only Kodak Paper, but who pays attention to that. That is just to promote purchasing their products, right? WRONG- In further reading I discovered that Kodak Papers have a bar code printed on the back side of the paper. The printer reads that code and sets up the printer to the specific needs of that paper whether you use MATT, Semi-Gloss or Glossy paper. In fact, I used glossy in the 4x6 tray and Matt in the 8x10 tray and it worked fine. Here is the catch I thought. They offer cheaper ink but get it back on higher priced paper, but to my surprise, when I priced the Kodak Paper at WalMart it was slightly cheaper than the HP paper. I then printed 2 8x10 and 6 4x6's on this printer, then put the photos on my flash drive and had them printed at both Walmart & Staples to compare print quality. To my surprise the prints from my printer were equal to or better than those from the commercial printers.

If you hold down the control key and roll the mouse wheel you can change font size and it sounds like you might have done that by accident, so give it a try and see if it help.

Also, click on View in the top part of Explorer (or the AA icon in IE7) and you can set font size there.

That's very interesting about the ctrl & mouse roll. Thank you. I'm still playing around w/ it. Still haven't been able to get it back to where it was before, but as I said earlier, it's improving as I discover new fonts, etc. Thank you again; it's nice to know some very computer-saavy is reading these & willing to help answer questions for those of us less-saavy readers.

Try this......
Right click on your desktop/Properties/Settings Tab/Advance button...select "scrollbar" on the drop down menu...and set your size....(mine is set at 16)

Hi Jean: Thank you for the response. But I don't find a 'scrollcar' on a drop down menu from the desktop/Properties/Settings/advance. When I get to the advance button, I find I only have things related to the monitor which doesn't include scroll.

I'm wondering if the problem might be in the monitor setting. I recently took my computer (CPU only) into the shop for some work. Of course, the monitor they used in the shop was different from mine. Could my CPU think it's still the shop's monitor setting??? If so, perhaps I need to clean up that issue.

I'll keep working on it. Thanks again everyone for your helpful replies.

I'm sorry. That should be:

Right click on your desktop/Properties/APPEARANCE Tab/Advance button...select "scrollbar"

Not the Settings tab.....

Here are some settings to check to be sure the comp is set up for your monitor:

Rt click desktop, then properties, then settings tab (be sure the screen resolution is set to your monitor's native resolution, found in the literature which came with it), color should be set to highest 32 bit, then click the advanced button at the bottom, click on the monitor tab (be sure you monitor is listed correctly), then click the properties button and make sure your video card is listed properly.

If all is well, then you know it's not the hardware settings. If something is wrong and you can't fix it, let us know and we can help some more.
