And politely express my concern it may be a lemon.

I have had similar problems with my HP laptop.Check to see how much RAM you have. I thought I had plenty until a "computer expert" explained to me that the total memory you have is not the actual memory you use. The memory the computer uses for our music, programs we download ext. is called virtual memory. When that error pops up again take note and see if it says virtual memory low. I had to install a gig of memory in addition to what I already had. My model can hold 2 gigs and I am getting ready to go buy another gig and replace whats there. Replacing the memory card is really easy so if you have to do it dont let some one in the store talk you into doing it and charging you some outrageous amount. Once I added more memory I didn't get kicked off, no "not responding" message and no more "low virtual memory".

Yes if it is still under warranty I would contact them and have the problem fixed.
The stats on that laptop show it comes with 1Gig of memory which should be ok but since it has Vista on it going up in memory can definitely help.

I have contacted Tech Support again. I was told that the 1GB of RAM that the Laptop came with is really not enough to run Windows Vista--even though it is industry standard to sell the PC that way. I was advised to upgrade to 2GB.

I was told that Compaq would send me a shipping box and I could send the laptop for them to check over and restore it to original--But isn't that what I have already done 3 times?

One problem is that there are only 2 slots and the RAM that is in there is 2-512s-so that means buying 2-1GBs. Tech support doesn't list anything larger than the 512s-so sending it in isn't an option for RAM.

My second problem is that every web site I go on to find the right Memory for this PC, doesn't list the Compaq Presario C700. The sites that list the C700 don't list the NR Model-so I'm not sure what to buy. I can't use the Memory Scanner (located on some sites)-because when I try to log the laptop onto the internet I get the not responding error message way before I ever get this far.

So... as soon as I can figure out what to buy I guess I'll opt to upgrade the Memory? Is this likely to fix my problem?? Any input is appreciated. Thanks again!!

Regarding fixing your issues it will certainly go a very long way towards it for sure. I think it is very wrong when they sell computers with so little RAM. They have done the same with all versions of Windows, selling is the whole point with not much effort towards customer satisfaction.

Personally if under warranty with those types of issues I would opt to send it back to them and have them either fix it or send you a new one. Adding memory will help speed up the pc and allow programs to run faster, also allow multiple programs to run at once. I definitely always advise upping the memory since it is an easy cheap way to improve a pc.

However some of the issues you are having do not necessarily sound like memory problems.
I would take advantage of it still being under warranty and let them take a look at it. In some cases if you open the pc to add memory you void your warranty so be absolutely certain about that before you do it!
My new pc had a seal on it telling me if I open the case period it voids the warranty.
Once you get it back you can always add memory.
What you need to do to find out exactly what is on your pc is install the belarc advisor, it is a free program that will give you a wealth of info on exactly what is in your pc. Just download, install and run it, I always print out a copy to keep in my file.

Also once you get it back you could always consider wiping Vista off and putting XP on it.

I just wanted to give everyone who had helped me an update on this now very frustrating issue. I ordered the memory from Crucial to max the PC RAM to 2 Gigs as suggested(thanks to owbist for the link). Replacing the RAM was very easy and the PC started up and recognized the 2 GIG-no problem. The computer worked ok for about 2-4 more weeks-then it wouldn't boot into windows..AGAIN!! Called TSupport again and after 2 failed attempts at restoring the system and running the diagnostics on the HDrive twice(short then long)--the hard drive showed to have a problem. So now the PC is on its way back to HP. The only good thing about all of this is that is has been a learning experience. Thanks again to all of you for your help. This is the second HP I've owned and at this point I'm not sure if it will be my last-but I still have to say that I've been very pleased with HP TSupport.

I had a DX50 built to my specs back in the 1980s and it never worked right. It took 2 years for me to figure out the problem but I sure did learn an awful lot about the inside of a computer. That was the worst yet best computer I ever owned. Turned out the DX50 chip overpowered all the other components causing all the crashes.
