It has taken me about a year and a half to get around to this but I wanted to post pictures of our kitchen redo from last year. I especially wanted to let others see a picture of the KA dishwasher install since many have questions about how far it sticks out. Before we had a Whirlpool DW with panels and it was flush with the surrounding cabinet fronts. This is about how far the current KA models will stick out with normal depth cabinets, as this one is pushed back as far as it will go. In our situation it works, with the control panel underneath the granite countertop overhang. The handle does not stick out that far and in addition it is curved so I think that helps. A squared handle might give the impression that is sticks out more, not to mention the fact that you might bump into the corners of the handle if it sticks out too far. Also there is a pic of the KA microwave with the drop down door. This MW is fairly pricey but we liked it because it looked so good with the other appliances and to be honest it just looked a little different from the normal MW.

As you can see we have a Dacor cooktop and had to use a Dacor pop up vent. It works well and we think it looks good. Hopefully this will give you some idea of what it looks like installed.

We were able to reuse the same cutout for the double oven without any modifications, so we got lucky there. That was one of the reasons we like the KA model. We had to modify the cutout for the microwave and the cooktop. The MW cutout had to be increased in height but decreased in width. Our previous cooktop was a downdraft Amana and to use the popup vent we had to cut the hole deeper, but the width was fine. The vent just clears the granite windowsill when rbeing raised but the granite has some overhang so the vent isn't squeezed against the wall when down. I did the modification for the MW but used professionals for the cooktop.

AWESOME picture of the kitchenaid sticking out. It really gives a potential KA buyer a good example of the look that the dishwasher will achieve once installed. I LOVE the cabinetry too!

Thanks for the photos tarheel! Can I ask you how you like your wall ovens and microwave? I've been contemplating these as well as the combined microwave/wall oven . I agree the microwave looks nice just wondering about the function of it all. Balancing form, function and budget ... aren't we all?!

Picking up and moving a 48" built-in is not trivial. You do not mention the model number of the fridge in your post, but I would not be surprised if it weighs 700 pounds. So you will need some kind of moving truck with a ramp or liftgate and plenty of help to get the thing moved, or you will need to freight it, heavily insured, to your house. Those costs will not be insignificant no matter what. Just the gas for the truck will be an appreciable expense. But there is no question that the interior room of the fridge will be better than a 36" standard depth. While you are giving up depth in the cavity, you are substituting an additional foot of storage with noticeable increases in both refrigerator and freezer capacity. Everything is easier to get to in a 48" and the aesthetics of the built-in vs. the standard depth 36" are simply not in the same ballpark in my estimation. You get a much more trim and finished look with a built-in and your kitchen will be greatly enhanced in appearance and "show-appeal" with the Thermador. So the question is what would I do? I'd go get the Thermador in a heartbeat. Had there been any 48" fridge with the dispenser quality of my LG on the market at the time we did our reno, I would have one now. I much prefer the wider presentation of the storage in a large built-in over having to reach over things like you have to do in a standard depth fridge. About the only thing I would be cautious over would be the lack of a warranty. But I am pretty handy and a decent diagnostician when it comes to appliances so it is less of a worry for me than it would be for someone who must always rely on service companies. Still, overall, I would shoot for moon and get the best you can get for the least amount of money because, well, that is just the way I am wired. I can't imagine this helps too much since your circumstances are markedly different, but I do wish you the best of luck with your decision and hope you will report back on what you decide and how it all works out.

Hi someone linked me to this thread when I was struggling with the FD frig decision to match my Elux single wall oven- they will be right next to each other. Thought I'd comment in case anyone else is in my position. First of all Vate- GORGEOUS counters! Meg_ma- Thank you- Also really helped to see your handles and SS right next to each other as that will be my scenario. And if anyone is considering an Elux wall oven and the KA FD frig, I do believe that Vate's handles on her double wall oven are different than the Elux single wall oven handle. They do match the KA frig much better. If you do a search on AJ Madison of Elux double ovens, it is the Pro or Desinger style. Not offered in the Single wall oven, but I'm off to see if it is possible to switch the handle on my Elux wave touch single wall oven. Originally started questioning if I could switch the handles on the KA FD frig with the KA pro handles...so off in a new direction. But again, because I saw these pics, if I can't switch them, I'm okay with it now. Thanks again to everyone here.

This was one of our original options, but the majority of the cabinets are uppers. Therefore adding the few base cabinets wasn't very expensive. Here is a drawing of what the kitchenette is intended to look like. Its not very big but should work perfectly in the space.

Thanks, everyone. Now can anyone recommend a place to buy a chrome soap dispenser? (modern looking). A quick google search led to an acceptable one for .....65 dollars!!! Why are these so expensive?? Mustbnuts, color suggestions for backsplash please? I am thinking light gray or a zen green. Helou, yes, KA Dishdrawer. It is properly installed (and pushed back) now. And we have been using it up a storm. I like it for the convenience. MY dh finds that it doesn't have much room - we keep things separate because we keep kosher, so we have to load the meat dishes in one, the dairy dishes in the other. That is the reason we bought it. But if you can have more fleixiblity, you will definitely have enough room to put large loads. ONe caveat: It is EXTREMELY difficult to install. Our plumber couldn't do it, the first installation team for ABT couldnt do it, we had to get the elite custom kitchen team from ABT to come out. I would only recommend buying it IF you have an installer who has installed it before! thanks for all the help, people. Kieffers_Guy, thanks. It was a custom built home and we used the contactors cabinet makers. They did a good job, even carrying the cabinets to a built in hutch in the breakfast area and a built in entertainment center in the family room.

mmhmmgood, we like both appliances. As for the double oven, we bought an additional roll out rack for the lower level. The oven is the upper convection model. We have not used the self clean function and don't plan on using it. All self cleaning is nothing more than a super hot cycle and heat like that is not good for electronic components. I find the inside is easy to clean since there are no exposed elements. Soap, water and a little BKF seems to work fine when needed.

The MW is great. It is all stainless inside. You will see where some people complain that it is noisy and has a cool down cycle. If you heat something for more than 4 minutes in it, it will continue to "run" for a few minutes in a cool down cycle. It is basically the same noise level as if it were running. In an open kitchen "great room" environment like ours it is a non issue. I suspect the people who find it most offensive are those with an enclosed kitchen or one where the MW is near the eating/living areas. People who see it at first think it is some sort of small oven and not a microwave, since it basically looks identical to the double oven.

Just for the record, I have a KUDE70 stainless dishwasher also and it does not stick out beyond the drawer/door fronts of the cabinets around it. It is installed flush in the run of cabinets. We did nothing to the interior void in order to make that happen. It beautiful!

Glad you like the DW. We are very pleased with ours as well.

Standard cabinet depth is 24 inches. This does not count door or drawer fronts. The KUDE is 24 1/2 inches deep with an additional 3/4 inch of insulation on the back which they state can be compressed. This does not count the depth of the handle. Our DW has the power connection running out the side so there is nothing in the back. Our previous Whirlpool had panel inserts and fit flush with the cabinet face.

We have the KUDE pushed back about as far as it will go. I had them line the back edge of the door up with the cabinet face to give it a nice even look as opposed to shoving another 1/4 inch or so of the DW into the opening. The DW sticks our 1 1/8 inch from the surrounding cabinet face, but still less than the granite overhang.

Total depth of KUDE: 24 1/2 + 3/4 = 25 1/4 inches
Total depth of our cabinets plus KUDE: 24 + 1 1/8 = 25 1/8 inches (this would indicate some compression of the insulation)
Total depth of granite: 25 1/2 inches
