Network problems

I am at my wits' end with this problem. I have a wireless network with my desktop hardwired to the router and acting as the gateway. I use my laptop in a different part of the house, connecting wirelessly. I have not used the desktop since Thursday, but my son and I have been using our laptops wirelessly with no problem. However, now I cannot get on the Internet with the desktop. I have disconnected everything, reconnected and turned everything back on. The laptop works just fine, but the desktop refuses to connect. All I get is "acquiring network address". I have tried command prompts: ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew with no luck. The desktop runs Windows XP and the laptop Windows 7. I have checked hardware and all seems well---no yellow or red exclamation marks. I know the router is working since the laptop connects just fine. Is there something in the configuration in the desktop that may be wrong, or what could my problem be?
