spam post on GW crreating havic on screen

On the building forum, there is a post that I clicked on that turns the whole screen into pics of cats that turn into hissing cats.

The post is spam.

What is causing this?

I know GW had problems last night.

I checked my computer and do not have any virus.

I went there and could only pick up a couple of words, but looks like spam. I saw "make money" behind the cats. LOL I don't see the point in it if you can't read it.

Some of the gardenweb members purposely mess up spamed pages by adding stuff like that cat. Then you cant read their spam ! Wonder how much money would could have made.

All they have to do is click on your member name, then 'send email'. That's the only way that it would say it was coming from GardenWeb. I'm sure they are just selecting everyone who's active on a particular forum. It may be annoying, but it's not personal. You said it gave you the creeps; what about it was creepy? BTW, I think you should do like Jo and report it to GardenWeb. And of course never, never open links that come to you from unwanted emails! Kate

honestly if you don't wish to switch from IE to another browser then you are simply asking for punishment. IE was not made for users, but advertisers. That is why IE users have more problems with ads than users of any other browser. If you won't help yourself why on earth do you expect anyone else to help you? Download Firefox and it will automatically import all your IE links and settings to make things painless. Complaining about how bad IE sucks on ad based web sites is like sticking your hand into a fire and complaining to god about making fire less hot. Ain't gonna happen. Help yourself or learn to accept the pain.

msjee - I left this website when it went to "pay to play". In part because the international posters who were such an integral part of the experience here at that time were priced out. I don't blame you for blocking ads that freeze your computer. I don't blame people for blocking ads for any reason. People need to understand though that GW is not a charitable venture. It exists to make money for the owners and investors. So there are ads. Protesting to GW and the advertisers about the most annoying types of ads does have some influence but ads in some form will continue.

So many good responses. I agree with so much already said. Vampiressrn comment that "I think there is a lot of gray area here" is very much to the point. If I tell a poster that I also have a bed in the corner, and I link to my blog photo, and the blog has an advertisement for smelling salts, one person might feel that it's a ploy for smelling salts sales, and one might just see it as a helpful link. Given that, I don't think most of us are patrolling for spam, or getting all up in it over posts with links or blog links. When other posters start labeling something as "spam" it usually is. And if I have a website called Redbazel and you click on it, that's on you. Doesn't mean my posting with the same screen name I've used for 10 years is spam. If I post that I HAVE a website, and you email me to ask about it, that is also on you. Doesn't mean I tried to dredge up hits to my website. Now, I'm glad that the votes thing got brought up. While I don't think anyone here had any bad motives when they asked for ugliest kitty votes, or pinkest cheek votes or dancing with penguin votes, I don't really think the decorating forum is the place for this. If you want to call your friends and solicit votes, I guess that's ok. But I really think that votes should also be based on real feelings. So if I click on the "Vote for MY recliner!!" thread and I find that Magnaverde's recliner is in a Glen plaid and I truly love some anonymous recliner in gray velvet, it's annoying to see all the votes go to MV just because he happens to be an outstanding GW poster instead of to the anon. owner of the very pretty gray velvet. It skews the voting process. If it's popularity votes you want, My vote is for MV. If we are Really voting for nice recliners, I'm going to check the box next to the velvet with the feather headrest and the built-in remote. Red **No blogs, so don't hunt for them!!

there is a red alert message at the top of the forums about the problems they are having, if you collapse it you can not see it.

Mikie is right. A member has just made the spam post unreadable.

Several of us 'regulars' at the Test Forum do that there, due to there being a lot of Spam posts, some of them being vulgar. We just post to it making a body background, and it renders the post pretty unreadable for the most part, but it starts its drop down the one and only page there.

I can see where it could cause trouble and be confusing if one did not know what was going on. Perhaps a background of
would be a lot less confusing.

If you want to see what the post says, just
right click, and then 'select all', or that is what it is in Firefox anyway.

A few days ago I did that to a thread at the Household Finance Forum, I think it was), and then I reported the URL via the Contact Us to GW so they could get it all gone. I think the post is gone now.

Thanks everyone!
I was worried it was a virus or something.
When I receive e-mail reply messages for my post from GW, in my inbox every GW e-mail has an attachment and a blank message instead.
Is this part of their gremlin problem?

No, its not virus or part of the gremlin problem. If you see Chemocurl's message above, it will explain what it is.

I posted the cat over the spam messages he had in several forums. Sorry for the confusion. It was an especially bad time to do that, in light of the GW problems. Sorry about that. Sandy

Thanks, Susanjn. I checked back on some of the forums I had done to see if there was confusion and explain it but none of them seemed the least bit concerned. Except for one lady who was reading it when the cats came up and it startled her! Others liked it as well, as he had been a very prolific spammer and I saw several posts asking GW to get him off.
