Rhizo, I remember those days. Spike never 'punished' me for anything though. I was even a paid member back then. Remember when not all - only some - of the forums were open other than to read unless a paid subscriber? It wasn't much money, and it seems like computer help was the reason I began paying, I remember needing computer help - I was saved a world of grief more than once.

One of my favorite characters on the rose forum was Disney'd. About three times, last time permanently. I wonder what ever happened to him and his ever-so-patient wife.

Chi....I dearly hope and pray that individuals never have the power to make a post completely disappear from the forums! That would be a travesty. For example, a certain someone who frequents the KT, recently commented that she wishes a 'couple' of KTers would be banned, lol.

Mor, there have been some truly remarkably nut jobs that we all loved to hate....I remember one woman, especially. I'd say, "oh goody, pass the popcorn" when she would show up. Sadly, she pushed too far at last and was banished forever. I miss her.

Maybe she'll be back now, under a new name. ;-)

Did we ever figure out of reported spam is actually removed or if I am just blocking it from my own view?

I guess the easiest way to know is for people to see if they see it. I know there was one on the Vermicomposting site, but I'm sure the same one posted on other forums

I reported three spams on the first three posts on the Weddings forum. Do you see them?

nope. Just people asking for advice. Yay, it works!

And I didn't see anything but worms!

Maybe there's a threshold and if a certain number of people report it as spam, it gets deleted.

I reported some last night on the chiropractor and ring resizing threads. Usually threads that get bumped up from years ago are spam.

When I got my first computer I was so excited about scrolling around looking and learning. Didn't take long for me to be disappointed. Trying a forum that sounded interesting, and then seeing some of the off-color (putting it nicely) language that was used, I was ready to quit. I just couldn't understand why it was allowed on a public site.

Then I went looking for Container Gardening, and found Garden Party. What a welcome relief! Soon saw the announcement there re Kitchen Table which was the day Spike set up the KT. Been here ever since, free and paid. Computer Help saved my sanity when I was trying to learn more about PC's. Never understood the animosity toward Spike. I often wonder what it would be like now, if we had all paid back then?

What are you calling spam? I hope that option doesn't turn into a "tattle-tale" button to get people banned.

The pattern seems to be someone posting with a personal story then a link to their product. Usually to a very old thread.

You can also report posts that are inappropriate or that you don't like. I'm not sure how they handle those. Maybe just remove them from the reporter's screen?

I do hope that it doesn't become standard to automatically report posts to old threads as spam, without taking into account the text of the recent post. I say that because the day things switched over, there were several ancient threads resurrected. Most people were asking about how to search and others were asking about the background, but they were doing it on thread that were 2-4 years old, so I'm assuming they were confused but had figured out how to search the site, those threads were the ones that came up, and they didn't notice the date.

I have reported a couple of posts as spam, because the poster did what chi83 said, a personal story and link. So I went to their profile site or whatever (I clicked on their user name) and saw that they had responded in a different thread, with a different link. It was spam-ahoy, so I marked them dead.

On other boards I've been apart of, inappropriate posts are viewed by a person to determine if they violated the TOS. If they did, it's deleted. If it was something like cursing, that might be subjective and at the discretion of the person reading and the general feel of the board. (I'm personally pro-cursing, because sometimes a well place curse best encompasses my frustration, but I try to refrain out of respect for people who are offended).

In my experience, posts that are flagged with "don't like it" are the ones that are the most likely to be allowed to remain. I mean, if someone says that people who live in suburbs are mindless, money hungry drones, that's not spam and not inappropriate or abusive, so not liking it would be the best option. Yeah, totally weak example, but that's all I could come up with.
