Light and Medicine Cab don't fit - Restoration Hardware

we bought an inset medicine cabinet and light fixture from Restoration Hardware...Medicine cabinet (colonial style with crown molding) is installed - light fixture being installed. When light is installed properly, the molding from the cabinet extends almost 1/2 way across the bulbs from the fixture. The fixture needs to extend approx two more inches from the wall to clear the cabinet...any suggestions? fixture was very expensive and since they are from the same place, i am surprised they would not work together...

If you can't return the fixture, maybe bring it to a metal shop and have something put on the back of the fixture in a matching metal to hold it away from the wall. Can you post a photo of the fixture. Hard to try and help without seeing what it looks like. Maybe build out part of the wall it's mounted on?

They should take it back though, unless it was custom.

thanks blondelle - what you have suggested is exactly what my DH was planning (we are taking the fixture to a lighting place today to see about extending a piece)to do that, or build a box out of sheet rock....i am planning to look at other fixtures to see if the width is standard, or if this particular fixture is shorter than others - it's just one more thing more difficult than expected! GGRRRRRRRRRR

The builder should be able to "box out" an area for the medicine cabinet, by cutting the studs and framing a box to fit the cabinet. This can be done even if the wall is load-bearing, but the builder should determine first if it is load-bearing in order to properly frame it because a header may be needed. You also have to make sure that there are no other obstructions, such as a plumbing vent or electrical wiring. The wiring may not be too difficult to move, a plumbing vent would be more difficult and probably more costly. Have you already opened the wall to see what is inside or is this new construction?

I just looked on the Restoration Hardware site, and there are several examples of the sconces being wider than the vanity. Some appear to be very purposefully placed wider than the vanity, other appear to be just a shade wider. Here is a link that might be useful: RH bathroom pictures

I have no experience with RH vanities but am happy with the quality of our RH wood dining table, coffee table, side table and library media cabinet, as well as a metal side table. I also just ordered the salvaged dining sideboard and it seems to be a handsome, sturdy piece of furniture, although it's still sitting in my garage and yet to be used. They work well with our antique pine and oak pieces. My RH furniture pieces are all much nicer than some of the damaged furniture I've seen at the outlets, although my coffee table and media unit came from the outlet and they're perfect (after DH glued back on some loose trim from the media cabinet - but it was 60% off and worth the small effort!). The vanities in the RH stores look pretty nice to me, especially compared to my old 1980's vanity! That said, I wouldn't want to order one if I couldn't see it in person first. When we redo our bathroom I'll probably try to save some money and buy the cabinets from Conestoga or Barkers, with a bargain stone remnant for the counter.

Thanks again. I am still not sure, of course! I really love antique lights. The one I'm looking at doesn't seem quite so fussy, I guess because it's old and weathered. I am considering other options, yes on eBay. Usually the hanging fixtures are used under a table or something,. This room has neither table, nor bar, nor island. pcjs - I've seen lots of shades like these, but no fixtures-only auctions in my searches! I don't dislike the schoolhouse ones, they just seem so expensive for something so plain. I have been looking at ebay, and the schoolhouse ones tend to go for more $$, I think, because they are currently very popular. Igloochic - I always wanted to tell you how much I love your lighting! I love old lights and need one for my dining room. I hope you catch that thread when I get a picture to post. I also really like that picture in the mini-bath - the cats in the tree - very charming!

I'm sorry to hear about your dilema. Hopefully your DH can resolve things. It's frustrating nontheless, especially knowing how expensive RH is. -I'm just curious as to which size medicine cabinet and style light fixture that you have from RH? I also just recently ordered the cartwright recessed medicine cabinet and will need some sort of lighting to extend above it. If I might also ask, how great a depth (exension) would you suggest the fixture be to clear the molding?
