Something I've seen done lately to save space is put a tub toward a back wall with a nice tile shower in front of it and a glass panel with a glass door into the tub/shower "room". Don't know if that is something you would consider or not.

If you have a second bathroom with a tub, I wouldn't worry too much about losing the tub in the master bath.

Ok so I decided to take the tub out. Can you guys help me arange everything in the bathroom so I can get more space in the room. I had made it about 8 feet wide.. I'm sure i can still get a nice shower, double sink and throw in the bidet my lady wanted. Hopefully have more room in the bedroom!

In place of a bidet, go with a washlet instead. Washlets are nicer and don't take up a big chunk of floor space.

I need to look those up, not to sure what they look like. What do you guys think about a 4x6 shower on the left side and then in place of the tub put the toilet and washlet? Keeping the vanity with double sink in the middle. That will bring in my wall 2 ft

The door placement is not set yet? or does the other room have a set up that dictates the placement?

We did a very similar type of thing with our master, and there was much debate over how much to steal from the bedroom.

If you put the 4x6 shower on one side of the room, and the vanity (how about a 72" to match the length of the shower and wall) on the opposite wall, then have the door more towards the side of the room. Toilet/washlet or toilet + bidet, would now be where the vanity is in the sketch above, but not directly in front of the door.

Any windows in there to worry about? Any plumbing issues you want to avoid- like leaving the toilet in a current spot??

Just about the above drawing, I would be concerned about the space to get to the toilet- very tight. We were also very tight on space, and I set up boxes in the room to block out where things were to make sure we would be able to move around without clipping ankles, etc.,. Even though we are tight on space, I haven't bumped anything yet, even in the dark, so I think we snuck by with just enough space.

We are in the process of our bathroom reno as well and we took out our small walk-in-closet to add more space for the bathroom. Ours still won't be as large as yours (only 5'6" x 13'4"), but it works for us. We are building 15 feet of closet with espresso/glass doors along one end of our bedroom. Our already somewhat small bedroom will be even smaller now, but it will work more efficiently because we'll not only have hanging clothes in closets, but drawers as well. No need for a dresser.

Sorry for the bad drawing but I ran out of graph paper. What I drew out looks kind of weird but I dont know if it would be weird to leave the bathrooms out in the open. I have heard that those glass enclosures are expensive, so I could def live without it.

double check the space needed for the toilet/bidet- you may need more on either side than what it looks like in the drawing. "wasted space" may not be accessible, unless you make it storage accessible from the "toilet room".
space may work better if the toilet and vanity is flipped.... or slide the vanity towards the shower?

Your second drawing shows the room 14' by 6' correct?

I left the shower as a 4' by 6' shower with a built-in bench at one end, you can omit that built-in bench and just use a portable bench for a larger shower space should you choose. I'd recommend a portable bench.

The toilet/washlet space is 36" wide. I added a small pony wall between the countertop and the toilet, right now the pony wall is the same depth as the countertop. You could extend the wall further into the room another 6"-12" or so should you desire, to give a little more privacy in to the washlet space. alternatively, you could extend that pony wall all the way across the room and add a door to make a water closet, but it does close the room off and makes it more compact. Code requires the minimum size for a WC to be 30" by 60" with the door opening outward. I think the space is a little small for a closed off WC.

Between the shower and the toilet is the countertop with two sinks. The countertop is 6' 6" long as shown with a "medicine cabinet" at each end. One built into the water closet pony wall, the other recessed into the shower. You could "pull" that medicine cabinet out of the shower, it would shrink your countertop length down to about 6'.

You could put a small storage cabinet in the upper left corner of the room.

As drawn, I think the room flows fairly well and there arre no traffic choke points. Open the door and you see the vanity with dual sinks. You see the shower. The toilet is "hidden" behind the swing of the bathroom door, and behind the pony wall. The pony wall can just be a pony wall (not floor-to-ceiling, just partial height) or you can make it extend all the way to the ceiling. 48" high will provide a good amount of privacy to the WC. Going above 60" and you start to choke down the room again. But your choice.

The red in the drawing is just to denote the doors. Except for the red line on the shower floor that shows pitch-to-drain, that should be black. The shower door has to open out into the bathroom.

The medicine cabinet doors can be positioned so they don;t hit the faucets when opened. Or they can be raised so they swing over the faucet. Myriad options.

Watch the swing of the shower door versus the bathroom entry door. You don't want their swings to interfere with each other.

One other thing, back to the pony wall that hides the water closet. On the sink side, the lower part of the pony wall is covered by the sink cabinet. So the upper part of the pony wall can be used as a medicine cabinet, accessible from the sink side of the wall. The lower part of the pony wall can be used as storage, accessible from the toilet side. A small storage place to store toilet paper, etc.

If you want a bidet, seriously consider a washlet. A washlet is a toilet and bidet combined. But the washlet is a souped up bidet. Warmed water to bath your behind, followed by heated air to dry it. All sorts of tricks and treats. Prevents you from having to shuffle from one piece of porcelain to another. And it takes up the space of one fixture versus two.

{{gwi:1476793}} are highly recommended. The washlet can be a simple add-on toilet seat, something that essentially replaces the existing seat on your toilet. Or it can be and "all-in-one" thing in and of itself like the Neorest. From a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

one last thing, in your last post you wrote something about "that leaves 60" for the vanity" or somethign like that.

60" is a little snug for two sinks and it really restricts your bowl size. Code requires a minimum or 15" between the sink drain and the adjacent wall. There's a second restriction for dual sinks, you need a minimum of 30" between the center of one sink to the center of the adjacent sink.

Two snugged in sinks can really cheapen the look and limit the utility of an otherwise nice bathroom.

Mongo thank you so much for changing it around. I like the flow on your design a lot better! Can you do something on graph or something so I can get things moving as far as getting the vanity made and also to run thr plumbing. The room is like a 5 1/2 or so but the really dosnt matter cause my problem was the length and we have that figured out.

I'm not to sure what your saying to add a medecine cabinet to the pony wall and also don't get how there will leave room for on the toilet side.

Can you show me a birds eye view or 3d(not sure what you guys call it) of how your ideas will look cause I'm def doing that layout you did for me. Btw I'm going to have a pocket door going into the bathroom

Unfortunately I can;t scan drawings, I changed from PCs to Macs a while ago and never bothered updating my scanner to Mac.

I did a coupe of quick drawings in adobe illustrator. Nothing fancy as I just got the program and haven't learned how to properly use it. But regarding the "medicine cabinets" in the pony wall, the following scratch pad drawings will hopefully convey a better idea of what I'm getting at:

Note that the "sink side" medicine cabinet uses the upper part of the pony wall and the "toilet side" storage uses the lower half of the pony wall. I didn't show doors. There might not even be space to have a door on the toilet side.

I can show you a photo of what I did in my own bathroom. Instead of having a narrow 5" wide pony wall, I instead turned it into a 48" tall cabinet that's maybe 15" wide and about 32" deep. You can see two drawers in my "pony cabinet".

The upper is where my wife stores her hair dryer, etc, there are outlets in the cabinet so they stay plugged in all the time. The lower drawer is on 28" full extension slides, so it slides all the way out of the cabinet, almost like a kitchen pull-out pantry. The lower drawer is divided in half vertically, the shelving on one side faces the sink side of the room and it serves as a medicine cabinet of sorts, with several shelves about 4" deep. The side that faces the toilet has several shelves that are about 6" deep, deep enough to hold rolls of toilet paper, toilet cleaning supplies, etc.

I think using a pocket door will help your room spatially, especially with the room being 5-1/2' deep and your vanity taking up a bit of that 5-1/2" depth.

To give you frame of reference with size, our bathroom is almost identical in size to yours, slightly smaller. Ours is 5'6" wide x 13'4" long. We're in the process of building right now. We gutted the space ourselves, and it really does help to visualize the space by using blue painters tape on the floor to measure everything; i.e., shower enclosure, knee walls, vanity, toilet area, etc.

I had thought about storage on the toilet side of the knee wall, but unless it has a door, I was afraid someone might "miss" and soil the TP! So, I scrapped that idea:)

One of the last bathrooms I did was contemporary, walls were individual wood panels, the majority of the panels were roughly 15" wide by 24" tall, proportions pulled from the "golden rectangle" which the homeowner was into real big. Some others were larger, some smaller. Many of the panels were either door fronts or drawer fronts, though some were fixed. One side section of wall I did in a sort of Fibonacci pattern.

Each panel was separated by it's neighbor by about 1/8". The cabinet doors and drawer fronts were blank slabs. No visible knobs, no visible hinges, no visible hardware. You had to know which panels on the wall to touch, and where to touch them, to get the panels to pop open.

Very clean, very cool. Wood was a dark dark chocolate brown, so dark that it was almost ebonized.

Vanity was floating and underlit. They wanted me to do a large concrete trough sink, we agreed it was a bit overwhelming for the space. They used it in another bathroom instead. For their bath I made two low profile, fairly chunky sinks with minimal detail. Perfect for the feel of the room.

Tiles were glass. Some backlit. Very tedious to do, but extremely cool. Floors were large format, charcoal colored tiles, 450mm (about 18") squares.

A slick looking room.

For contemporary, yeah, keep it clean. Minimal visual clutter. My bathroom is the "anti-slick" look.

I would love to see of that contemporary bathroom you did... So the medecine cabinets might not be the way to go if i wasnted to go contemporary.

Also for thr washlet, do I tell thr plumber to run a hot anne cold or what? They are going to start moving pipes on Monday. I think I'm gonna run the electrical for thr touch screen on the pony wAll that way it's not behind thr toilet like I have seen others

When you talk to the plumber, ask him if he's familiar with washlet installation.

No photos, I never take photos of other people's houses.

You just need to take a look at your space and visualize your idea of "contemporary". Run through magazines or the internet for inspiration photos.

Your bathroom is actually quite simple and straightforward due to the size and dimensions.

If you want an anchored vanity or a floating vanity.

Do you want the vanity to be of a single height, or do you want to incorporate variations in elevation.

Your vanity will be what, 6' long or so, so there is plenty of storage in a vanity that size.

You can easily incorporate mirrored medicine cabinets over the sinks. There are cabinets that fit the bill, contemporary style-wise.

If you want to obscure the toilet, then you can take a one of several approaches, it depends on how it fits your style: You can incorporate a change in elevation in the cabinetry, like the pony wall we've already discussed. You could incorporate a sheet of glass, glass tile, frosted glass, glass block, wood, metal...pretty much anything. Contemporary can be many building materials, but it's the detail, and sometimes the simplicity in the lack of detail, that can set and define your overall style.

If you desire balance and symmetry, you can treat the left end of the vanity the same as you treat the right end.

Or not block the toilet at all.

As to the washlet, standard toilet plumbing usually applies, but you can download the specifics off the manufacturer's website. The washlets usually have their own integral heater. But they will need electricity.

I vote for a bidet plus the washlet. Both have their place. I have both

This may be too late, but reach into the shower and grab the faucet like you normally would, if a long reach or awkward or you would get wet, move them to a better position. Mine are so far a reach (around the toilet)I have to lean into the shower brace myself, leaning on the far wall with one hand, then reach the lever with my other hand, then try to get out before the cold water sprays me. I'm getting older and I won't always be able to do that. If they were on the opposite wall I could just reach in a few inches.
I may change mine when I open the wall, it may be easy.
