Possible to incorporate attached garage apartment into main house?
Comments (5)GN Builders...thanks for the response. So what key words would I use to google this type of project? I must be missing something basic. I’ve tried googling variations of “garage conversion incorporate into house” and “remove wall between garage apartment and house” and I’m not finding examples, just garage apartments or general wall removal. Thanks again!...See MoreHelp with path from garage and driveway to house
Comments (14)A concrete walk is going to be the best bang for the buck if your main concern is functionality. If that's too much $ for now, you might be best off to just create a mulch path so as to keep out of the mud at low cost. Later, you can rake the mulch away, use it elsewhere, and install concrete. If you use crushed shells or gravel, it'll be a lot more work to remove and you'll probably have no use for it anywhere else in the yard. If you carefully calculated grade, you could place crushed material lower than what a permanent walk would be, and then build concrete (or whatever) directly over it when the time came. You'd need to make sure it would drain, or puddling would be a problem, too....See MoreStairs from garage to entry... aluminum metal, stone, wood tread ???
Comments (10)Not lots of snow and ice in my area. We actually raised our foundation two rows of block so we actually have about 6 steps. My husband likes the aluminum for the structure but not for the treads. I thought about brick but feel like that will look way too heavy with 6 or so steps. That’s a lot of brick in the garage. My husband mentioned concrete treads and the aluminum rep said they could do a form with the aluminum for the concrete to be poured into (tread portion). That’s an option but again I’m worried it will look industrial (maybe stain the concrete treads??). My husband is all about structure and durability and while I am too, I still consider the details. We work together well, but I’m struggling with how to make the aluminum stairs look nice and unique without looking industrial. I keep reminding myself it’s just a garage that few guests will see, but I also think about the fact that I’LL see them as I’ll be using them almost every day. The one thing I do know is I don’t want metal stair treads....See MoreCan you build switchback stairs from garage to 2nd floor living space?
Comments (3)There is not a lot of information and maybe a discrepancy. But in general, you can put any stair in any shape in any space when you account for it's space requirement. A decent sized 2-car garage is about 20ish x 24 = 500sf, so if your upstairs is 1500sf and 1:1 in footprint with the garage that would be roughly a 6 car garage. There is plenty of room for anything if you only want to use 2 car bays. What I suspect is you have a 2 car typically-sized garage, and are trying to fit a stair in a static footprint: - Then yes, a 'U' shaped stair would not work as it would be about 6' wide and 10' long, eating too much space in 1 bay and a car then wouldn't fit in width or length. - A 3' wide straight run of stair could go along an outside wall though, being about 20' long including landings. - If you have a constricting roof upstairs (e.g. a 1/2 story), then you can introduce a turn to a straight stair and make it an 'L', reducing the 20' length....See Moremeldy_nva
