The weirdest thing (Christmas present)

So, I exchanged gifts with a friend a few nights ago and he gave me something so strange! I got him a paper shredder... his only worked in reverse and he'd never had a good one... I've given paper shredders before and people always love them for some reason so I knew it would be a hit :o) Anyway, what he gave me is this thing called the Starlight Lamp. It is a fiber optic light with flashing, dancing LED lights. The fiber optic bundle sits on a base that rotates so that the lights can spin around! That feature can be turned on or off. There are several different light patterns that can be chosen from pulses to slow or fast fades. The speed at which the patterns change can be altered. It plays a few musical tones (new age type stuff... the stuff you would hear if you were having a massage or in a meditation class), and even a few nature sounds. My favorite is the one of the waves crashing on the shore. The lights can be set to change in response to sound or music, and the sensitivity of that feature can be increased or decreased. There is also a volume control for the speaker. There are audio in/out jacks, and even an A/C adapter (which is not included) jack if you don't want to use batteries. It can be placed on a table or stand on the floor using the 3 included 4 foot legs. I have mine on the stand so Jasper can't attack it.

Anyway, I've never seen anything like it before and at first I thought it was a little tacky, but I must admit, I really like it now! The only thing that would make it better is if it had a remote control! Here are a few pics.

The mention of fondue sets reminds me: My neighbor called the other day & asked me if I "still needed cardboard". Of course! So he brought over an 18' long trailer loaded with the cardboard he'd just cleaned out of his attic after nearly 20 years in the same house. My neighbor is an engineer, & he's careful, meticulous, & orderly. He never throws away the box something came in, just in case. His trailer was piled with all the cardboard boxes that he had saved: a couple of printer boxes boxes that once held light fixtures, ceiling fans, & electrical stuff for the house a camera box at least one box that boots came in the boxes that had held their son's graduation presents boxes that the son's wedding presents had come in boxes that had held about 15-16 years worth of Christmas & birthday presents for the grandchildren, starting with the baby things, continuing through toys, computer games, & athletic shoes, to the latest, a telescope box lots more, but I can't remember them all. I felt a little sad about tearing it up & putting it in the garden; it was like a time capsule or a museum or a biography, the chronological story of a family's changing needs over the course of a generation. but it's in the garden now, doing a useful job (& not sitting in a hot attic waiting to ignite!)

Tomatoes in winter are always a wonderful surprise! I am overwintering two small container-grown tomato plants in my garage. These are plants that were transplanted into their containers last March or April. Both are small plants and they only produce small numbers of tomatoes--just a few cherry tomatoes a week, but they're better than having no tomatoes at all. Because we have cats and dogs who spend some time indoors, I don't even attemp to grow tomatoes indoors. I tried it for a couple of years, but didn't feel like it was worth the bother. Your results may vary. The plants in the garage get pretty cold at night because the garage is unheated, but it is pretty well-insulated. I drag the containers outside on sunny, warm winter days and then back into the garage every night. I know that if I forget to move them indoors, they'll freeze or something like a deer or rabbit will eat them at night. Once the nights are dropping below 55 degrees, the plants don't bloom or set new fruit very well, so the fruit I'm harvesting now were set in late October or early November when the nights still were fairly warm. After an 80-degree day last week, one of the plants bloomed, but I haven't checked to see if any of those blooms set fruit. The flavor of winter tomatoes is not as good as summer tomatoes, but they're better than grocery store tomatoes.

I like this cookbook I picked up on a whim. It is mostly vegan with a bit of cheese here and there. All of the recipes are eggless. It is from a long-standing Los Angeles vegetarian restaurant. I can see it packed in a gift basket with tempeh, tamari sauce, whole grain pasta, nuts, egg replacer (health food store), good olive oil, and assorted organic vegetables. When my kids were very little (before being able to read), I had different paper for each child. Then my husband and I could relax on the couch and they would know which gifts they could open without us having to read the tag on each one. (Am I lazy or what? ) It also makes wrapping go much faster if you have the gifts presorted by person and don't have to change paper for each gift. In our family, Santa brings each child one big thing and the rest of the gifts are from mom and dad. I buy special paper for the gifts from Santa (usually with pictures of Santa on it). I make gift tags with "special" writing and these gifts are placed under the tree separately for the other gifts. That paper never makes another appearance. Santa also leaves each child a letter about their behavior and accomplishments for the past year. It's getting harder to pull this off each year. Happy Holidays!

Enjoy your novelty item and I give you permission to move it to your laundry room when you are done. Or let Jasper have at it.

I remember those from years ago! Loved them. (back in the 70's) My BF at the time got me one for xmas. No sounds or music, just the light. Enjoy Bobby!

I just got my kids one for the playroom and they LOVE it! Enjoy your Bobby - it brought back lots of fun memories for me too.

BTW - the one I got my kids doesn;t play the new age music, but it does have the light show and spin. Not sure the 9 and 12 yo's would like the nerw age stuff anyway! LOLOL!

I view that as the most significant gift item.

It says a lot about what's happening to our world. That one thing, fiber optics, has completely changed world history and cilvilization in a very short time.

Without fiber optics, there would be no internet, cell phones, GPS, youtube ----------

Fiber optics is a very fascinating science. Those little fibers can carry over 300,000 telephone conversations simultaniously with no interferences.

Wow, I'm glad other people know about these things. They are fun :o) I just wish the ocean track wouldn't have the bird chirping, it messes up the serenity of white noise. I guess that's what the big metal table fan is for beside my bed!

Jessy, I'd just finished watching some Dick Van Dyke... I've never been much of a fan, but there are a few episodes that are truly great like the Christmas episode and the one where Laura gets her foot stuck in the bath tub. Laura and the kid really annoy me, as does Buddy, but I adore Sally :o) I LOVE being able to stream right to the TV with the Wii!

I like that present a lot, and it does remind me of fiber optics from the 70's, particularly Jones Hall in Houston, which I first visited when I was at Rice. That was also when I bought my first strobe light! I think you got a great gift.

I was also a fan of Sally on the DVD Show.

Yes, I remember them too, my girls actually bought hand held ones at the circus one year! They loved them.

That was back when fiber optics were brand new and no one knew they were going to change the world, but they were still neat when you turned off all the lights.

I still have a fiber optic Jack O Lantern too, so there. I think it still works.
