Bad Sound Card'

I believe that I have a bad sound card. The convenience of installing a USB sound adapter seems great, but so many of them use the word 'enhance sound.' I can't enhance, I need to create. Do the usb sound products like Audio Advantage Amigo replace a defective sound card?

I'd run a the Diagnostic Software (SeaTools) Seagate-exclusive hard drive diagnostic software designed to troubleshoot most hard drive issues. To me it sounds like a bad sector on the HD. You know what that clicking is. I'd be saying why me!, but the same problem on multiple new HD's, I'd be scratching my head. BTW - beautiful system you built there. You might want to look at FreeCorder I have it as a hidden toolbar in Firefox.. I use it when I want to record "any sounds" the computer plays. Saves as 128bit mp3 by default. Do use custom install & choose carefully what you want installed as it has capabilities for doing other things too. Which you may or may not want. Besides the above which is entirely possible,there are potentially numerous locations where the volume can be controlled and each has to be checked; the keyboard, the Notification Area icon, the Control Panel, any mixer installed,and audio support software to name a few. You have to check them all. Plus, it wouldn't be the first time the system was accidently muted so check those settings too. I just did a house call last weekend for "no volume" in one speaker. Looked all over and finally found the slide bar in a freshly installed WinAmp adjusted all the way to one side. Of course, no one knew how it got this way. DA

Thanks for the advice. Chelone, I posted this on The Old House forum and got a lot of interesting replies. I will try the Remodeling forum also. Van, I'd love to get a chimney contractor to give me an estimate, but therein lies the problem. We can't get anyone to come out for months. They are all booked. Apparently this is a crazy time of the year for them. I would like to use the defective chimney as a bargaining chip, but the seller is being stubborn and is basically saying he won't budge...he won't fix, he won't pay, etc. Now we have to decide if we should go forward on this house we love knowing that the chimney could be a major burr in our sides. You will want a multi channel sound card for creating music. A USB interface is more limited than a firewire or PCI card.

Just wondering, if you are the first owner of this computer. If it was previously owned your onboard sound may have been disabled due to the prior owner installing a sound card and prior to selling you that system, removing that card and not re-enabling onboard sound. I have found this happens often. There is also the possibility of onboard features such as sound chips failing. In this case you could buy a sound card, disable onboard sound in the BIOS and install the drivers provided with the card you purchase.
