Question about Vent Hood Install

Hi,

Just a quick question about my vent hood install. Hopefully someone can comment. My vent hood is linked below. It's an Airmec Vulcano (600cfm, 36").

The distance from the top of the fan unit to the ceiling where I have my 6" duct is probably around 12 to 14" (8 ' ceilings, fan 30" above stove). The outlet from the fan doesn't line up perfectly (as I had hoped when I installed the duct to the exterior) and is offset about 1.5" in one direction and maybe 1" in the other.

I can use an elbow section of duct to make this work along with a 3" section of straight duct but was wondering if the ridges inside the elbow would cause issues with airflow etc... My other option is using a straight piece of duct and sort of make it fit with some trimming etc... Is this worth the effort or should I just go with the elbow section?

In the ceiling there is another elbow section that turns the duct 90 degrees and then it's out the wall pretty much.

I'm probably overthinking this. Any comments appreciated.

If the elbow section of duct in question is of the type where there are 4 sections that independently rotate allowing one to create an offset in a straight line, then the ridges are modest and probably not the dominant pressure loss component in the path. The 90-degree bend will dominate the ducting, and there will be various pressure losses around the hood transitions and the exit assembly.

I can't say from experience whether one of these elbows would be sufficient for your offset or whether you will need to use two.

6" seems small for a 600 CFM blower. It looks like Airmec shows 6" up to 15'. That 90 deg. elbow = 5' of straight pipe. The offset would be negligable. If you have more than 10' of straight pipe plus the 90 deg. elbow you should go up 1" in diameter for the entire run for each additional 10' of run. So 5' for the elbow plus 10' straight = 6" dia. 11-20' straight = 7" dia. 21-30' = 8" duct etc.

Make sure the correct size ducting is installed. It will say in the instructions that came with the unit. If the ductwork runs through an unheated space, it needs to be insulated. The roof vent should have it's own baffle plate integrated into the vent and a wire grating to keep out livestock. A written description of the intended work would be nice. If you're more comfortable with a written, signed contract, ask for one. Is he running the electric or was there a line from a previous installation. Around here(LI,NY) he would need to be a licensed electrician to do the work. The need for a permit would depend on your local requirements. Ron

Thanks! I noticed that the grille was greasy and when I removed it, the top filter obviously had been filtering. The fact that the holes on either side of the top filter had airflow and were completely open (there were no filters on them) made me think that something was wrong.

We don't have the option right now to duct to the exterior. Technically a recirculating vent hood is supposed to filter the air and send out clean air. So wouldn't it be clean air?

my total duct length is the one elbow (90) with 6" of straight attached and about 12 to 14" between the fan and the elbow. So I'm well below the 15'. Thanks a lot for mentioning it though.

Yes, the elbow I'm considering is the standard ones made up of 4 sections that swivel. One of those will do it no problem. I'm going to make one more attempt at fitting a striaght section in there otherwise I'll go with the elbow section.

Thanks again for the replies. Good to know (most likely) that I'm not going to have any issues (hopefully) if I use the elbow section.
