Lost Tasks in Toolbar

Normally, open tasks have appeared in the toobar at the bottom of my screen, but they have disappeared, so that I can no longer go between one and another by simply clicking on them in the taskbar. I am running XP home, and can see a spot beside the start button that looks like it should widen to reveal operating tasks, but I can't widen it.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance,

The icons to the right of the start button are called Quick Launch. If you right click on the taskbar and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar", you should be able to find the double arrows to the right of the start button and drag over to the right. Also right click the taskbar, and under Toolbars, put a check on Quick Launch. After you get it working right, go back and Lock the Taskbar.

Well yes, what you suggest works as you say, but doesn't retrieve the 'windows' I have opened, like Internet Explorer, so, for example, if I want to go between IE and OE, I can minimize but not maximize because the task does not show on the quick-launch toolbar. I have to open IE again from the desktop or, if I put it on the toolbar, there. I suspect that my wife might have done something. She uses a Japanese language program. There's a setting somewhere...

I will try this. I keep forgetting about right click options. I went into tools and clicked the pull down menu and clicked on customize. What came up were all the "buttons" I am missing. But all it indicated was that I needed to drag each button and place it at the top. I am not good at dragging but I could find no other options.Are there any??? I could not find any place where there were check marks, as are on newer programs. BTW, I only use MSWord, so these buttons were at the top once and now are gone. As for finding out how much space on my disks, another question I had, the right click did work for me in My Computer. Thanks.

lotodig- Just so you're more confident, I've re-booted my computer many times over the years using the technique I've described. Several times, for example, my cursor has frozen so I couldn't navigate to do anything, such as re-boot normally. I didn't always know why some problem was happening, but I did know that the power button re-boot would not make anything worse. Usually the only time you can have a problem is if you decide to do a re-boot/re-start of any kind in the middle of some major activity where you are making changes to the computer, such as installing updates or doing a defragmentation. However, in the other 99.9% of cases, all you're doing is cleaning out the RAM of some unexplained little problem and starting fresh.

Hi Colin, Thanks for the suggestion but I did try that and I couldn't click and drag it anywhere unfortunately. I know I have added things to my tool bar before using that method, but unfortunately for some reason it isn't working this time. I will keep trying things however, as I am sure it is something easy I am over looking. Abbey

Unlock the toolbar, right click then go to Toolbars and click on Quick Launch, then Lock the Toolbar...

I don't believe you are talking about quick launch.
I don't know any sure cure unless you restore to an earlier date.
You can try a few other things. Open a program and at the top (Title Bar) right click it and click Maxmize and than click Minimize.
Something else with a program open to maximize hold down on
the Alt Key First and than the Spacebar and press N
Try My Documents. It should Minimize to the Taskbar.
You can also open a few things and click on Default.
If you have changed your Icons in All Programs and click Default they will also change to Default.
That's just a minor detail.

You will need to click on the letter T
Minimize Programs Missing is about the 2nd on
the list.
When you click on it It will have a download screen.
Let me know if this is what you wanted.

I was justing screwing up the courage to restore to a point before they disappeared. That little program you pointed me to worked like a charm.
