Please tell me what your GE Monogram Range or Rangetop

In my obsessive search I am now seriously looking at the GE Monogram rangetop. It's not the most powerful, but close (the new one will have 18000 BTU), and it seems a good combination --- stainless steel top rather than black, reversible grates.

If you have a GE Monogram range or rangetop -- how do you like it? Any concerns to be aware of? Do you recommend?

Am planning on separate wall ovens so am looking only at the rangetop.

Mine is the 36" with grill; I really enjoy it. It's my first powerful range. I use the grill all the time. The burner igniters are the only thing that raise any concern. They are a bit finicky- sometimes they click on well after the burner's lit. One once stopped working for a day before finding its click again.
Mine's an LP model, the NG ones are even hotter. The reason I got it-- it was less costly (by far) than a similar Thermador, which was my no.1 pick, but budget won out over other considerations.

I have the 36" 6 burner rangetop. I love it. My cooking has improved, and the ease at which I cook is wonderful. The simmer is perfect, I have yet to burn a thing. I have used the wok on the burners and it the fit is great, and that is the only time I have come close to using 17000 btus on mine. It is more than enough for me, most things are cooked on medium or below. I have the all clad griddle and the grill that fits over two burners and that has worked great for me. I was going back and forth between the monogram and the wolf and I am really happy with both the look and the function of the monogram, and wouldn't change it for anything else. I am sure you will be just as delighted as I am with it.

Some Monogram products such as ranges and fridges are completely different from the Profile line - some like MWs are just better looking. Also, Monogram provides better warranty service. I'd stay away from a Sears extended warranty - you'll likely be locked into using A&E for service. You don't need to go with a single brand, however. Most of us mix and match. Do your research and get the best brand of each product that meets your needs. No need to get a complete package from one brand.

What I'm understanding is that you have a few incremental adjustments (like High, Medium, and Low) rather than infinite adjustments in between those 3? That would be disappointing, because I like to try to fine tune when something's cooking just a little too fast or slowly. I think it's a good thing to let others know...and, like you have, to let GE know that it is considered to be a negative. I'm sorry they don't seem more concerned about a purchaser's satisfaction. I hope you can get better adjustments as time goes on. Sometimes if I don't get my Wolf to adjust just right going when turning it up, I try going too far up and head down to where I wanted and am able to get it. That won't work for you either? I think the "new" in-house Monogram ranges have been out since 2008. I'm getting a rangetop so can't comment on oven feature comparisons. But I prefer the Monogram to the Thermador because the Monogram achieves its simmer with dual-stacked burners. Thermador turns the burners on and off every minute. I just did not like that idea, I don't want to hear the click of the igniters every minute of every hour I might be simmering, and my husband is convinced that the igniters will wear out sooner. That's probably not a huge deal because I know he will fix them, but still. I am not attracted to the star burner shape because I already have a cooktop with daisy-shaped burners, and they do not heat evenly across the pan AT ALL. It also sounds like GE might have better service than Thermador. I don't expect service to be an issue with a simple appliance like the rangetop, but with a range or oven is very important. I see that the never-ending open vs sealed feature has been mentioned on this thread...I HAVE open burners on my old cooktop. ALL the old cooktops have open burners. There is nothing special about their performance. My open burners are NOT powerful, and they DO NOT heat evenly across the pan. I know there are people here who believe that open burners are the key to high performance, but my cooktop is existence proof that they are not. People forget that every old cooktop across America had open burners. They aren't getting commercial performance out of them, just because they're open. If brand cache/resale value were important to me, there's only 2 choices. Viking and Wolf. I would choose Wolf: better quality and better service. If looking for best performance (which I am), Monogram is at the top of my list. Better specs and service than Viking, better specs than Wolf.

Working regularly on the Wolf open and sealed burner rangetops, I've encountered a variety of cleaning "situations". First, as ZMMN mentioned, the griddle is unbelievably easy to "clean". The key is not to strip the seasoning off. The seasoning, much like a cast iron skillet, is what makes the surface resilient to sticking and easy to cook on. Simply scrape with a dough cutter (a few bucks from L&T or rest. supply) and steam with a wet paper towel while the griddle is still hot. Maybe 2 times a year I'll strip it down some, but with the stainless cover or optional butcher block insert you really don't need to make it "shiney". Side note, the sealed is a little cleaner because the trip tray is top side and can be taken out to clean. On the other hand, the open burner griddle can get residue in the corners of the drip area. Next, the Wolf "open" is actually semi-sealed so you won't have much drop down (except with the griddle). I think that makes it easier to clean for food spills. Conversely, with the single burner cap on the sealed rangetop, I think this unit does better with liquid boil-overs. Either way, if you'll wipe off the residue and then rinse or quick wash it before cooking on it again you'll be in good shape.

I have the 48", 6 burners plus grill. I love it. We cook a lot and it has been a real workhorse. The first problem with it has been this week - one of the burners will not ignite and I will have to call in for repair. However, I've had this 7 years and if that's the worst thing that happens, I'm delighted. Can't comment on the grates as these are different than the current version. We don't use the grill much at all. We are in the South and find that grilling outside is just easier.

That all being said, we are currently building and the new kitchen will probably get a Blue Star. Not that I don't love this one, but the Blue Star will let me get a 24" griddle plus 6 burners (bigger kitchen) and more BTUs. Has I not found out about the Bluestar I probably would have gotten the Monogtam again.

Thanks for the responses and the photo!

It is really helpful to know that people are happy with the GE (notwithstanding burner needing maintenance after 7 years).

I've looked at many of the options. Concerns about service/parts knocked out Thermador and BS, wanting a steel top rather than porcelain knocked out Dacor (which I love the looks of) and Wolf. That left Capital, DCS, GE and of those three, the GE just (purely personal) appeals more aesthetically. I haven't even gotten to pricing yet.

Now, did I make that decision right? (??) and if so, buy now or wait for the soon to come new model?

Hi sombreuil_mongrel,

What is the CFM of your hood fan. I am looking at the grill (gas) version of the range top and wanted to know what CFM hood fan should I purchases.

My hood is the deep thermador, 27x42. It has the internal 1000CFM fan. I wish I had the 1400CFM (external) blower when I use the grill.
It's mounted high; 72" above floor. Were it mounted lower, it would be in the lines of sight, and would dominate the scene more than it does now; I wouldn't have it under those circumstances.

joejack, I have a Monogram 36" with grill and a Fantech 10 hood which is rated at 1260 CFM but with the silencer and the turns in the exhaust pipe is only 1060 CFM but it works fine with the grill. It is also extremely quiet. Unless it is turned on high it is quiet enough that I can not hear it running and forget to turn it off.

paddy 99 - on fantech's website - is yours the RE line with an external motor? I was looking at the broan hoods, which was rated at 600 cfm. will this be enough for the 36" ge mono range? did you look into any other hoods - sounds like you are happy with this one.

when I was at the Monogram Design Center in NYC recently, they told me that with the new 48" rangetop, they recommended that the vent have at least 600 cfm.

I don't know that much about these things -- my architect is recommending a retractble hood with 500 cfm. Will that be enough, assuming I don't use all the burners on high at the same time?

msmodo, The one I have is the FKD10. I looked at a few others but really know very little about any of them. Our kitchen designer recommended this because I do a lot of stir frying with hot chiles. I had two woks going last night one with a meat dish and the other with vegetables and had very little odor in the kitchen. In fact my wife says she doesn't care for it because she can barely smell the bacon frying.

The exhaust is on a rheostat so it has can be adjusted for just about anything you cook. As a rough guess I would think you would need more than 500 cfm.

Great thread. I have a 36" monogram cooktop.....but sadly it is still in the box. But soon.....very soon....I'll be able to report on it's performance. I did not bother with the grill...we do a lot of outside grilling. I got a broan hood with a 900 cfm external blower for it.
